Thanks for the advice guys - it's appreciated.  :y

just to add to this, whilst you may have indeed found the only good one, I would like to state for the record that our failure rate with that brand is 100%. I would also like to point out that NO SPARES are available in the UK and that shipping back to the manufacturer is cost prohibitive. For an extra £35 you could have had a Pioneer with full European support.

Well - that's a very positive and supportive post Dave. It's such a good feeling to be told that I've got it all wrong.
Thank you  :y

Well - after finally deciding to buy an Xtrons TD714 DD Unit and almost two years on I'm pleased to report that the unit has exceeded my expectations both in terms of its performance and the much doubted reliability factor. (or did I just happen to buy one that was made properly by a discerning and conscientious Chinaman!!)

I grafted on a JBL power amp and 12" sub unit and both work well alongside the factory fitted Bose amp and Omega standard speaker set.

The sound is clean (depending of course on the recorded quality of the source audio/video) and volume levels more than adequate for the Omega interior. The 7" display is clear and reasonably bright during normal daylight conditions and blinding (but can be adjusted) at night!!.

Touch screen and Menu controls are good although the Operating System is a little dated.
Bluetooth works well with my Android phone on both hands free calls and streaming MP3s, although a little laggy (switch over response) but acceptable when receiving a call whilst playing audio.

It has given me what I was looking for at an affordable price.
I would recommend this unit to anyone on a limited budget and it won't break your heart if it gets stolen!!,

After living with this condition sine 2008 I have at last associated it with the AC climate control being activated. If I switch the AC off the engine's deceleration is normal.

Steering controls are on the lower 8 pin power part of the ISO block, and the three connections at the top are the data lines for the display.

But the reason that I have a doubt, is that the CCRT uses a completely different protocol language for the display, and to the best of my knowledge its far more involved than simply swapping a few wires around.

A CCRT700 does NOT use the same standard configured 36 pin Mini ISO block as used by the rest of the Vx Double DIN range, and the block advertised is for lower spec head units, CDR2005 / CCR2006 etc - CCRT700 does not have a solution available for doing what you are trying to do - you may need to downgrade the display itself

Hi Dave - picking up on an old post of yours and specifically the highlighted section regarding steering wheel controls. I need to establish the connection between the lower ISO plug 'A' and the two connectors which are part of the SW Ctrls wiring loom. I include a diagram to illustrate what I'm after. In short which cable goes to which between the two connectors and the ISO 'A' plug.
Many thanks in advance if you can help.

Cheers - Brian

Dave - many thanks for the prompt response. However it's not an adapter kit that I'm after. The new HU I have fitted has three wires that are supposed to connect to the existing steering wheel control wiring in the Omega. I really just need to figure out which wire connects where. One of the wires is a -ve 'Ground' the other two are marked 'AD1' and 'AD2' and should be connected to the existing controls. That's why I need to understand how the existing controls connect to the 36 way ISO block and to which block/pins. Your original post indicated that the steering wheel controls used the 'lower block' A so just need to know which pin did what.
Cheers Dave

Whilst you will pay a premium for Brands, there is another saying that rings true here - you get what you pay for....

To a degree (which is not easy to qualify) this is true - however it is a fact that well known or respected brands mantain their position by pricing their products based on 'What the Market Can Stand'. They will of course have to produce a reliable product before they can get away with it. This marketing strategy is used by many Blue Chip companies. Sony is a classic example and latterly Apple with their overpriced gadgets which consumers are more than happy to shell out hundreds of pounds just to say that they have an Iphone or pod or book etc....... These guys are clever marketeers  ::)
But yes if you're going to buy Far Eastern imports then do your research first adhering to the 'All that glitters isn't Gold' principal.  ;)

Another thing to bear in mind when choosing a head unit from abroad, is that not all of them can be converted for UK useage, as many were specifically built for their international markets with region coding for the DVD and strange spec tuner frequencies.

You're right of course and it is with this in mind that I still continue to cautiously consider all options before making that purchase  :-/

I am however finding some success stories on other forums where Far Eastern imports have been reliable and even recommended.

Still my search continues  :)

I do wish the branded HUs were a tad less expensive though.

Thanks again for a good post Dave

Sony xav 70 bt (US import). Easy enough to use and does most of what it says on the tin. (except play region2 dvds and tune in steps of 0.1  :o). Bluetooth seems reliable so far ie no connection issues, nice clear sound. UK ones are about £500+, US ones about £300 delivered. at a risk of sounding cynical, I wouldn't be too surprised to find that a lot of the ones on sale in the UK had been imported from the States.

Hi Al,

Many thanks for the info on your Sony. It has helped. I agree about Sony speakers - not brilliant are they  :-/

If price is your main factor I would personally go for a Pioneer, either 3200 or 4200 Double din series.
Branded but still relatively cheap compared to others.

Thank you for the recommendation - it's appreciated.  :y

The choice is yours, If you want to spend 50p on a cheesy china import stereo that will go wrong fairly quickly and be left with a dubious warranty, then thats up to you - should you wish to invest in a branded model that will last a lot longer and give years of service, then you will have to put your hands in your pockets.

Thanks Dave - I do understand your point  ;)

Gosh Dave - that's seems a bit harsh!

That`s a comment from someone who obviously doesn`t understand what I do for a living, and my involvement with all aspects of car audio !!

 ::)

Slightly taken out of context Dave and misunderstood methinks! as I took the liberty of visiting your web site and indeed reading your signature line at the bottom of your posts.
I do therefore fully understand what you do for a living and I'm sure you are a very knowledgeable and experienced person. I myself spent many years as a motor engineer dealing with a wide range of diciplines before moving into electronics design and manufacturing for professional recording equipment and latterly in a quality management and IT Administrator role in a company supporting BT Payphone equipment.

Anyhoo Dave - that aside I would still like to understand the issues you experienced when dealing with XTRONS direct over warranty claims.

It's guys like you that can best provide a wealth of well informed specialist advice to those that don't have it. Where better to get info and advice about all things Omega than from those who have the experience.

I do have a genuine interest here Dave - thank you again.

Cheers

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thats so funny

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Just wait until you try to claim on it

Gosh Dave - that's seems a bit harsh!  :-?

I'm curious to understand what problems you've had in the past when claiming direct with XTRONS.
This of course all helps me make an informed decision as to which unit to purchase - i.e. XTRONS or other make.

Cheers

Brian
