Omega General Help / radiator fans
« on: 28 July 2008, 21:48:06 »
got a 3.0 elite, twin fans in front of the radiator to avoid overheating and heat soak (someone will probably tell me that all the omegas have twin fans now!!)... anyway...

i noticed that when the fan(s) cut in its only the drivers side one spinning. i would assume, rightly or wrongly, that cos i have two fans then they should both be spinning??? can anyone clarify? and if this is the case then is there something obvious i should look for, unplugged fan or something?

edit: and also i noted that when i switch the ignition off the fans stop, they dont continue for the minute or so afterwards to continue cooling.

thanks in advance all.

Omega General Help / header tank filler cap
« on: 20 July 2008, 15:16:06 »
hi all, urgent problem! help required!

i recently got a new header tank filler cap, 90467473, as the rubber ring on the inside of the old one split in the week when i was doing a coolant flush.

anyway, flushing again today and guess what... the new cap won't go on properly. went on ok first couple of times, but now the rubber seems to be facing 'inwards', although not split.

i guess im looking at a new header tank if the thread is knackered or something.

anyway, the question i have is as follows... i need to get this cap back on, which shouldnt be a problem in its original state, but i cant seem to work out whats up with the rubber ring. how far down should it go? should it be touching the top of the lid from the inside and wrapped around the black plastic valve? the one i am looking at right now sits on top of the black plastic valve pointing inwards (kinda flattened i guess) so the header tank isnt able to screw down properly.

as ever, your help appreciated.

Omega General Help / Is This Sign Of Faulty Oil Cooler? (pics)
« on: 14 April 2008, 22:18:53 »
Hi everyone

As many of you will be aware, I've been having problems with a continued slow coolant loss. The coolant drips down the back of the engine onto the ground and subsequently I have to top it up once a week or so. Last week the heater matrix burst. I've changed HBV and flushed but still problem. Advice on here pointed to oil cooler / plate and since I did the cam cover gaskets and breather system at the weekend I thought I'd take a snap or two of what I saw around the oil cooler area to show those of you more knowledgable than I. Any feedback greatly appreciated as I want to get this sorted once and for all.

So what's the verdict? Fair bit of sludge by the looks of it? Look familiar to anyone? Thanks in advance!

Omega General Help / coolant leak, and testing hbv
« on: 08 May 2008, 19:26:00 »
hi all

ok, so i'm after any 'ahhh have you tried looking at this' suggestions really.

well documented coolant leak, topping up every week.

replaced heater bypass valve
heater matrix burst not long after
replaced heater matrix
replaced oil cooler
replaced coolant bridge
replaced water pump (when cambelt done last week)

still dripping down back of engine block on to ground below. left a washing up bowl under the car to see whats what, the coolant now looks clean as a whistle (no oily tinge to it) but it's dripping from somewhere!

also leaving a deposit overnight when the engine isn't running if that brings to mind any ideas...

checked hoses, can't see anything untoward...

is there a way of determining if your hbv is working? this might be a stupid question. bought new vx one, just hoped it isnt duff. no evidence of leakage there or on accompanying hoses so probably nothing to do with it...

any suggestions welcome really, would like to nip it in the bud!

thanks in advance!

hi all

in the middle of doing the oil cooler, thermostat taken forever so far.

the bolt that holds the dipstick, coolant transfer pipe and some kind of clip together, is this essential as i have spent hours trying to get it back on and after dropping it a thousand times i have now lost it deep within the engine bay somewhere. ditto for the collar that goes round it.

i am here with my car in bits outside not sure what to do next so if anyone could help i would be really grateful

thanks in advance

Omega General Help / Cam Cover Replacement Woes
« on: 20 April 2008, 16:15:53 »
Last weekend I replaced the cam covers on The Mothership, drivers side fine, but awkward passengers side looked like it was leaking again from the back, albeit not as much.

Cleaned up engine, took passengers side off again, repositioned and resealed. Looked fine. Drove it 40 miles. No problem. Next day drove it 10 miles to the supermarket and smoke appearing, not collossal amounts, not as bad as it has been, but obviously leaking. Looks like smoke appearing from front to centre of cam cover on passengers side edge.

Initially it looked as though the smoke was coming from the gap inbetween the exhaust heat shield cover and base, as though oil had dripped down there, so I got power washer and blitzed the engine bay and all around that area.

Now it's all clean and shiny but smoke appearing still from same area.

Is it possible that oil is appearing from another leak somewhere as I don't really want to take cam cover off again to reposition without investigating other possibilities. Wouldn't be so bad if it was the drivers side cover!! If not I guess I'll have to reposition seal again but I wondered if there was another possible source around the oil filler area that I could look at that might be a bit further down?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Omega General Help / Am I Missing Something (pics)
« on: 14 April 2008, 22:25:46 »
OK so I got a bit trigger happy with the camera phone...  ;)

Noticed this bolthole underneath the passenger side cam cover when I was cleaning up. I seem to recall someone saying to me that it was supposed to be free of any screw or bolt but thought I'd post here to double check. Should it be free?

Also, you can see the smaller (filthy oil covered) star shaped bolt to the right, are these supposed to be present all the way along as I noticed that the next one down towards the front of the car is missing and an empty hole is there instead. Thanks again...

Hi there. I'm new here and will present myself in the newbie section later as soon as I have updated my profile. I'm a keen reader of these forums but this is my first post... I was hoping your experience might be able to help me out.

I have an Elite 3.0i 24v V6 and I seem to be losing coolant and what I think is quite a rate; I'm topping up once a week at least following the 'Coolant Level' warning inside.

Anyway I took the car to a VX service centre and they found no obvious problem and suggested a new water pump which I replaced. Problem still occurs. Even on the diagnostic sheet they gave me it stated that no problem detected.

No overheating, no obvious leaks, no dodgy oil residue in oil reservoir or coolant tank. Drawing blanks. No steam out of exhaust and A/C working OK. Just getting through it more often than I think I should.

Anyway, I hoped your invaluable advice might shed some light on the problem.

Thanks in advance, I look forward to your responses. Feel free to ask me if there's something you think I'm missing!!

 :)

I wondered if you had any suggestions?

hi all, hope you can advise me:

just recently, on startup, i get a strange loud whirring noise, like a motor of some kind, behind the area where the passengers side fog lamp is. i got under the car yesterday and had a look, there definitely looks like some kind of motor device or pump there but i'm not quite sure what it is.

the noise continues for about 20 seconds or so and then it is as if the motor cuts out and quickly 'whirrs' down again. it is quite loud.

mr haynes doesn't include 'whirr' or 'baffled' in his index or diagrams so wondered if you guys had experienced something similar and could help me diagnose.

thanks in advance for your advice.

My reversing lights stopped working, I changed the fuse, made no difference. Bulbs seem to be OK. I thought maybe it's the reversing light switch so called around to price 'em up, VX and aftermarket.

Most places told me that on a 3.0i AUTOMATIC Elite the switch is likely to be between 8 and 15 quid. Except one former VX franchise said that on auto's its a whole different kettle of fish and something about being an integral part of the gearbox costing £250 for the part.

Needless to say I'm a tad confused. I figure you knowledgable types would be a better bet... any ideas?!

Thanks in advance!

Omega General Help / Any ideas what this is for?
« on: 02 March 2008, 16:06:35 »
I wondered if this was a Sat Nav related item? It was loose behind the stereo when I removed the main centre controls yesterday. I have the factory fitted Sat Nav in the car but am unsure if this should be plugged in to it somewhere. It has cables coming out of it disappearing somewhere behind the dash but looks like some kind of junction box?

Your advice gratefully appreciated:
