Gents, Ladies and None Binary Types

I've previously been accuses of not taking the advice offered on OFF, and this has to stop.

I need to do the Cambelt on my Y reg 3.2 MV6.  I've got the DVD, I've got the locking kit and I've got the inclination and the time.  To be fair it looks easier than doing a citroen AX 1.4 D with the wrong tools.

What I'd like is those wiser than me, to point me gently in the direction of the most cost effective offering on the internet.

By cost effective I mean best quality with no compromise for price, at the lowest price.

Did I say Please YET ...

Please. Thanks in anticipation.

Omega General Help / Gearbox issues
« on: 02 June 2018, 07:21:01 »
Car is a 197K 3.2 MV6 Auto

Now Yesterday whilst on the M6 in traffic jam / through 50 mph road works In realised 2 things.
Ambiant temperature was 23 deg C

1 )  Firstly it wouldn't pull away very quickly, almost like I had the brakes on if it wasn't an auto, I'd say the clutch was slipping.

2 ) Then It wouldn't allow cruise control to be selected.

3 ) Then I tried the sport button, and that didn't work.

So when stationary, I turned it off and restarted and it was fine.

But after a few miles faults 1 and 3 came back. Cruise continued to work though.

Turning off and restarting fixed it for a while.

Anyone know anything about the GM autobox attached to the 3.2 omega ?

There is a smell of burning oil which is dripping onto the left hand exhaust (not large amounts particularly - not enough to fail the new MOT)

I have assumed the oil leak is engine oil, but............

Omega General Help / Another Oil Leak.

3.2 MV6 Auto 195K

I think it's coming from pipe work at the rear of the engine.  Can't see really, but it's not the rocker gaskets.

Any pointers ?

Omega General Help / Very BIG oil leak
« on: 05 March 2018, 18:18:46 »
Car : 3.2 MV6 196K
Rocker Gaskets replaced last summer at about 183K with genuine parts.
Proper cleaned out breather tubes on top of engine. .
Oil changed at 193K with genuine GM Fully Syth and Filter. (Cast Housing)

No leaks until 3 weeks ago.  Started small, I always check the oil before a long journey (and I do a lot of them) and I've been adding a bit more often but now on Thursday I had to top up after 100 miles into a Journey, and Then again 80 Miles later (on Sunday) and again this morning at 70 miles into a Journey, AND then another 70 miles this afternoon, and now 70 miles on it needs more. I calculate about 6 litres for about 450 miles.  That's a lot of rust proofing on the exhaust and lots of it on the floor.

I've not had it up on the ramps, (as Snow and rain and doesn't fit in my garage) but had it running and had a look at the filter housing area, and seems to be pouring down the back of the engine.

At first I wondered if the little wiring plug next to the Oil Filter Housing is likely to leak? but seems to be above that.  (Car is too low to see without ramps)

When the Rocker gaskets were leaking before it was all very slow.  Yes there was an advisory on the MOT, but nothing like this.

And it hasn't been leaking in at least 12K since I did them.

So what are we thinking ?

Newbie Welcome Area / It's been a year and 4 days

I'd like to thank whoever put all the great maintenance guides together, and the rest of you for providing polite, informed patient advice.

Just over a year ago I bought a Y reg 163K 3.2 MV6 auto saloon.

On Saturday it passed the MOT with one "minor" and 185K on the clock.

I have obviously spent more money on it than it was worth and still haven't fixed the dented door, which it came with.

This is where it started for me.

Omega General Help / Rear Brakes Refurb advice needed.
« on: 25 August 2017, 06:13:32 »
Car is a 3.2 MV6 Auto Y Reg (Y474UGW) with 182K on the clock.

The failure is a loss of fluid, probably caused by cooking of pads due to it being seized.
The first I knew I had a problem was that the braked felt a little spongy coming through the Derbyshire dales, but I pulled into a petrol station in Buxton, to find smoke coming off the drivers side rear.
Took wheel off to find that there was fluid everywhere.

Now, there's now not much pad left, but the disk looks to have survived, but I am a little confused.

Should the 3.2 MV6 saloon have Solid or Vented rear discs ? It has solid ones now. But maybe it has the wrong ones?

If so how can I check that the caliper is designed for solid or vented - I was thinking that maybe someone swapped the calipers in the past, if not, then it has the wrong discs  :o

I bet there's a whole load of posts about this sort of thing, but I'm posting before I borrow a car to go to work, so no time to search. I need to decide which seal kit I order, or whether to buy a remanufactured caliper ?

Omega General Help / Need to Replace a Rear Door.
« on: 29 May 2017, 20:25:19 »
I have a big dent in the rear passenger door of my MV6, and the previous owner has just contacted me to let me know he knows of a scrap yard with a good door in the same colour.

I've looked in all the maintenance guides, but there doesn't seem to be one on removing and refitting a door.

Has anyone any experience of this, know what tools to use and if new door pins are available from the dealer?

Cheers

Car is a 3.2 MV6 auto with a mega 176K on the clock.
Recent service history shows a Cam belt at 161K, Breathers cleaned out at 168K, oil and filter, and air filter changed at 173k.
There is an oil leak at the back of the engine.

So on Saturday the aim was to drive 440 miles to Cardiff and back at the speed limits, and with cruise control on for 430 of those miles.

Car starts a bit rough, but within a couple of miles it seems okay, perhaps a little unpowered, but on the motorway, at 70 mph it's okay.  All is fine until we get to the M50 which has a few inclines and I become aware it's running on less cylinders than GM designed it too.  I cure this by sticking it it sport mode to avoid the mega 2500 rpm flat spot.
At Monmouth it's struggling to idle at the traffic lights, so I put it in Neutral and give it a rev. Clearly misfiring.
I continue to Cardiff.  Park car, get pay and display ticket, and decide to move car 30 yards closer to my daughters student house.  Car runs on all six.

Drive to Penarth for Chips, then Back to Miseryside, with no issues.  Fuel consumption averages 33.8 mpg for 455 miles.

I ignore the car until Tuesday Morning, when I drive to Derby some 110 miles away.

Again rough running to start with, and once on the motorway, it's clearly misfiring. Stop on hard shoulder. Turn it off. count to 10, restart. Runs fine for 55 miles, until stoke.  Restart and it's all fine for the last 40 miles.
All fine this evening to drive the 15 miles to my digs.

Now. I have some new plugs to fit - from main dealer (but postponed because torx fasteners and lack of suitable tools and life then getting in the way), so if there's oil in the plug cavities I'll find out then. Plan is to do that when (and If I get home) at the weekend.

I don't have a code reader, although  my brother in law has one he's used on my old mk4 astra, but I would have expected an emissions warning light if the coil packs were failing. Plus I'd expect it NOT to be intermittent.  (The Mk4 astra 1.6 I had threw up a warning light when the coil pack was failing)

Anyway.  Anything else to look at?

also anyone near Derby or Nottingham (My digs are next to Ratcliff on Soar Power Station) that might fancy laughing at it one evening)

Omega General Help / New Wish bones - Now what ?
« on: 10 December 2016, 15:29:58 »
okay, I had someone replace both front wish bones a couple of weeks ago, and just spotted that the inside edges of the front tyres are well worn.  I've done 900 miles since they were replaced (including cARDIFF and back this morning) .

So I can't say how worn they were before. Don't want to replace tyres without getting alignment checked.

Where is best place to get alignment fully checked (I live in Miseryside and Work in Derby) ?

Omega General Help / Check my logic - Ref Oil Cooler
« on: 30 November 2016, 20:43:57 »
I bet all the regulars are sick of this frequently asked question.

I have followed the "Flow Chart" but a "professional" mechanic is telling me it's not likely.

I have a Y reg FL 3.2 MV6 with 166,000 miles on the clock.  I have done 4000 of them in my 2 months of ownership.

There is mayo on the oil filler cap, and plastic filler neck.
There is no mayo on the CLEAN oil on the dip stick.
There is no oil in the coolant (yet)
There appears to be a very small coolant loss. Like I think it's lost 1 cm on the Coolant level in 4000 miles.

I ran out of time to fit new discs and pads so got a "freelance" mobile mechanic to do them and the knackered wishbones, and he had permission to replace oil cooler, if it was not something else. I gave him a copy of the "flowchart" but he decided that it was probably not the oil cooler. He's cleaned out the breather pipes (apparently), and topped up the coolant. And I'm to see how it goes. Most my journeys have been long and typically the car gets up to temp and stays at 90 degrees for 3 hours / 120 miles.

I'm convinced it will be the oil cooler.

Note : I'm convinced I'll end up taking a day off work and replacing it, along with a service, because I struggle to trust mechanics, despite the fact that I have no spare time and am cack handed. So if anyone who know s what they are doing wants paying a commercially correct amount of money for doing it, let me know.  Car is in Derby during the week and Miseryside at Weekends.

Omega General Help / Rough running after all the rain.
« on: 22 November 2016, 21:52:50 »
After a weekend of rain, followed by 150 miles on the motorway in the rain, followed by All of yesterdays rain, my MV6 is very rough below 3000 rpm.  If I chuck it into sport mode it's fine at higher revs.

Is this old fashioned damp? or is it something like erm crank sensor ?

Omega General Help / spare keys ? MV6 3.2
« on: 07 November 2016, 22:01:57 »
I only have one remote key for my MV6 - I could do with a spare.
Does not have to be a remote.
What is the best way (ie cheap and reliable) of obtaining one?

I need a blue door in what I think is code 69L blue (although I tried to obtain a touch up pen from lookers liverpool and they no idea what I was talking about)

Rear passenger door for MV6 saloon

There are pictures in this link (I suppose I should create a photobucket account or something, but no time - off to cardiff in a minute)

Omega General Help / Encourage me to buy an Mv6
« on: 21 September 2016, 20:35:57 »
Tell me it'll be fine !!!B  :o
So Omegod (of this parish) frequents another car related forum where I saw an "Ideal" Mv6 for sale.
And he suggested in a private message that I might find this forum useful.

I've read pretty much everything that I can, but I'm having second thoughts about this particular car.

The guy that owns it is obviously very busy and has been moving house.

He needs to get it an MOT, but assuming it will pass, I was prepared to travel 4 hours on a train to either buy it or run away.
So In communication with owner I know the following

161K miles

Both heated seats work

Air con isn't blowing cold but the compressor is kicking in

He's looked through the service history but there is no evidence of the oil cooler being done, that's not to say it might not have done
There are receipts for services carried out in a level arch file that previous owner gave him when  he bought it

There is a receipt stating the gearbox oil was checked for condition at 152k, no recommendation to change but then at 158k there is a receipt for gearbox oil & filter change (June 2015, car has now done 161k)

- Timing Belt & Water Pump was also done at 152k

- Other work carried out in the last 2 years includes new battery, new radiator, replacement windscreen,, 4 tyres, front anti-roll bar end links, water heater valve replaced, exhaust system replaced.

There is a dent in one door (Omegod has a door in the correct colour, so no real issue)

It has an Irmscher front grille, finished in petrol blue, and No rust on any of the arches

I'm thinking my going off this particular car is a) It's rather miles away, b.) The air-con has thrown me. If it stopped working 12 mins after I got the car I'd live with it. c) I'm impatient.  d) I'll likely put at least 15K on the miles every year if not more, so whilst high miles does not faze me, it will quickly go higher.

The price he wants for it is less than I've spent on repairs and servicing of the family fleet in the last month, so not exactly going to break the bank if it all goes tits up.

I've justified it to my long suffering wife, who gets chronic back pain in my mk4 astra (so called sports seats are crap)

So encourage me to hold on in there. No second hand car under a grand will be perfect, and it'll all be fine.
