Omega General Help / Engine Oil Overfill !!!
« on: 11 August 2010, 22:25:16 »
Needed to top up by 0.5L to bring my dipstick up to max line (was mid way between min & max) so got my 1 litre bottle of oil and poured in half of it... then realised I was using my 2 litre bottle  ::) so I've now gone and overfilled by 0.5L above Max! been running the car and noticed an oil leak low down (not rocker covers) Have I done any harm by overfilling??? Never overfilled any car in 15yrs of driving...

Omega General Help / Suspension - Front Legs !?
« on: 07 August 2010, 23:39:12 »
Is this normal  :question

Only noticed the gap between damper rod plates & chassis mounting after new wishbones fitted... Posted a topic about it & got lots of helpful advice about what checks to make.. fully understand the advice given but can't remove the 24mm brass nut above the plate in order to carry out any checks. I've now been to three seperate garage mechanics who are all telling me there SHOULD be a gap between plate and mount  :exclamation knowing that mechanics can be liberal with the truth to get a job, I seriously don't know if this is normal or not? Can anyone with a pre-facelift mig tell me if thiers look the same or tight to chassis  :question

Omega General Help / Budget, Remould or Part Worn tyres?
« on: 06 August 2010, 01:01:09 »
Want to replace all four tyres & guess that I can't be the only one that doesn't want to spend £400+ on new tyres? At the same time my mig is 1.7 tonne (CD estate with A/C) and I drive it hard. Not sure which is the best trade off (fuel economy, handling, road noise etc.) between the cheaper options. Better to get brand new Budgets or part worn top range etc. any suggestions  ;)

Omega General Help / V6 front brake disc noise
« on: 05 August 2010, 23:37:22 »
My drivers side front brake disc is making a nasty scraping noise.. sounds like a crushed coke can scraping against the disc. I removed the wheel and slowly rotated the disc itself and the noise is apparant for about 1/3 of each rotation with very slight resistance while noisy.. pads are a little worn but never heard this sort of noise before. No noises when braking & passenger side is fine  :question

Omega General Help / V6 Damper Rod Issue, help needed!
« on: 04 August 2010, 23:43:38 »
I have just had new front wishbones fitted by a good local mechanic. I know that I should now have camber, caster & toe adjusted as necessary but will have to wait until I can afford it. The problem is, that when I lifted the bonnet after the job was complete, I noticed that the nut & plate at the top of the damper rods/suspension struts are now raised about 1cm from the chassis mount  :-? Before I had the wishbones replaced the plate was sitting flush against the chassis. I'm sure the plate & nut shouldn't sit proud of this mounting? I honestly don't know if this is normal or if I can make any necessary adjustment without taking the car to a garage. pictures below... I've had nothing but trouble since deciding to renew the wishbones  >:(

Omega General Help / V6 Wishbone Crisis - No Transport
« on: 29 July 2010, 01:11:52 »
just bought new set of front lower wishbones complete with bushes and balljoints - my mate say's he knows a mechanic (toyota main dealer) who will fit the pair for £50 cash... sounds reasonable so I agree... he turns up at my address yesterday with a few socket peices, torque wrench, hammer, couple of spanners and long bolster type tool with two wedge shaped prongs at the end (calls it a splitter?) I wouldn't know... spends over an hour with my help, jack & axle stands just trying to loosen the two long bolts... comes back today with 21mm socket for top bolt but still missing an 18mm for the pinch bolt :( finally gets both long bolts out and the pinch bolt with a 19mm  ::) but can't drop out the wishbone because balljoint is siezed (I'm told) so he wedges long pronged wedge thingy between steering knuckle & balljoint and start smashing away with the hammer (also hitting the caliper) after 15 minutes of smashing I tell him to leave it and ask him to replace the bolts so I can still use my car. Then find out that he's shifted the balljoint pin enough that the pinch bolt won't go back in! He say's he'll be back today to finish the job (day 3 and 1st wishbone still not off) My car is now sitting on axle stands and not safe to drive because the balljoint can't be bolted back onto the steering knuckle. basically I'm scr*wed !!! Any ideas or solutions welcome... £50 for anyone that can fit the new one's today... so I can cancel Mr toyota! I live in Greenwich, London, just of the A2. thanks Steve

recently drained & flushed the cooling system (2.5 V6 pre-facelift) and refilled with 50/50 mix. ran the car for 5 miles and topped up. Since then my temp gauge is rising to over 100 deg before high speed fan kicks in? used to kick in at 98 deg. wondering if there's an air lock, but have been told that the system is self bleeding? there was no crap in the rad when I flushed it & also ran through the whole system with clean water 3 times before doing refill. So I think matrix is fine too. I think fan switch is ECU controlled so can't figure how this has happened since coolant change. Any ideas very welcome, thanks steve. p.s. also taking much longer to drop temperature to 93 deg.

Just finished fitting new plugs (Champion twin electrode RC10DMC) on my 2.5 V6 mig  :y after major hassle accessing passenger side plugs.  Got down to working on the much easier driver side plugs and found loads of oil in each spark plug well (no oil in driver side plug wells)   :(  Tried to soak up most of the oil in each well (paper towel & screw driver) before removing each plug... but each plug came out covered in oil & residual oil definately dripped into combustion chambers.  Fitted new plugs & reasembled everything.  Started her up & white smoke billowed from the exhaust so much that I was expecting neighbours to call the fire brigade  :o Took my mig for a 5 mile run & its all settled down.  I'm assuming the oil is from blown cam rocker cover gasket & not too worried and guess the smoke storm was just oil burning off.  What I don't know, is how much damage I've done to my shiny new plugs by burning oil  :-/ ?  Will this foul the new plugs & if so have all my efforts to fit new plugs, been in vain  :'( ?  any advice welcome, cheers steve. ps. GM seem to have made it virtually impossible to the access rear passenger side plug with an ordinary extension bar, removed wipers & scuttle but still took me ages!?

Omega General Help / Cleaning V6 throttle body?
« on: 10 January 2010, 01:56:57 »
the throttle body on my V6 is full of crap and gunky carbon deposits. a mate of mine says it would be ok to remove air ducts from the throttle body, run the engine at fast idle and spray loads of carb cleaner direclty into throttle body to clean it through. Is this a safe bet or will I foul the plugs, injectors etc? any advice would be helpful. I don't want a clean throttle body if its going to foul everything else in the process. He assures me it will just burn off, only causing nasty exhaust smoke while I do it?  I trust his advice but he is used to working on carburettor engines not direct fuel injection systems. can anyone help?

Desperate help needed... hope someone can help? My car (1996 Omega 2.5 V6 estate) has just started thrashing up to

about 4000rpm when it's in neutral and should be idling!!! As soon as I put her into gear and pull away the revs

start to settle down, but thrash back up to 4-5k rpm once idling or clutch depressed (quite scary). Not mechanical (ie.

throttle cable isn't sticking). I've paperclipped the diagnostic socket for codes and its showing code 13 Oxygen

sensor - open circuit & code 39 Oxygen sensor - voltage high (rich mixture). Desperately need the car over

Christmas and its too late to book into the garage. I guess I must need a new O2 sensor? but really hope there

might be a quick fix, short circuit, or something I can do, to stay on the road next couple of days without revving

at 4-5k every time I'm sitting in traffic! Any tips or tricks  hugely appreciated! Cheers, Steve.

Newbie Welcome Area / Popping in to say hi !
« on: 04 September 2011, 11:36:31 »
Ok, so I'm not techically a newbie but sold the mig last year & started a new project.  Haven't been on OOF since 2010 so I'm a kind of pseudo-newbie  ;)

Anyway, hi to all that do know me & getting straight to the point, I was walking past a local used car dealership yesterday and saw what I think might be the newest, best mig that exists for under £2k... Straight away thought of you guy's, because I'm pretty sure you could search country wide to find another  ;)

If I'm wrong don't shoot me down, if I'm right then I know this car should be in the hands of an OOF'er  :y

She's a late 2003 genuine badged MV6 in silver.  Cant see a mark on her & everything looks OE.  Original MV6 alloys without a scratch. Rear boot lid say's Omega 2.6 V6. MV6 Badges on both sides at front.  The reg is KD03 XJM priced at £1,995

Probably taken in as p/x for a quick turn over.  Unlikely the dealer would know the difference between an MV6 and a 4pot  ;)  Would guess any sales patter would be something like 'lovely Vx with loads of extras' might even call it a vectra as he used to say to me 'nice vectra, that' referring to my 2.5 V6 Miggy  ::)

I think this mig needs to be saved from great uncle bulgaria buying it for his next caravan trip  :D

The dealership is callled 'standard car sales' they're located on Old Dover Rd, London SE3 7BT and the number is 0208 293 1553 (according to google).  I live quite close but don't know the phone number to confirm it  ;)

Anyway like I say, saw this mig & felt duty bound to touch base & report my findings  :y  For all you cynics, (ok that's most of us, me included) no, I'm not on commission or in it for a drink.  Just know that last run of the MV6's are like gold dust & dealer won't know it  :y

Take Care,

Stephen.

Been looking for a second miggy for swmbo 'cos MV6 Manual not really suitable... thinking low spec, low insurance, auto... so the 8v Select sprung to mind. This is not a "wanted" post 'cos I don't have the post count & not trying to cut any corners hoping for post to be "moved"... just general interest in the 8v... are there any out there? what colours? looking to sell? swap etc... any PM's welcome  :y

General Car Chat / Cleaning V6 Engine Bay - All the gear/no idea?
« on: 10 October 2010, 23:03:35 »
Seen lots of pics on the forum of stunningly clean engine bays and want to give mine a thorough clean without a major strip down... There are lots of eastern european run car washes in my area that advertise "engine clean" but they just use a high power water jet and blast everything. I think this would damage many components; alternator, sensors etc... So I'm gonna tackle it myself properly. Have a cupboard full of cleaning agents but need some tips on what to use & how to get a gleaming finish on plastics, plenum, brake/coolant resevoirs, ducting etc. thanks in advance  :y

General Car Chat / Catalytic Test on V6 ??
« on: 18 September 2010, 13:42:25 »
Seems like i have a damaged cat, but replacing both cat's will cost approx £600 with Vx trade club discount  :( some have said I need a back pressure test, are most garages equipped to do this & how much £ approx?

Also is there any sort of test port (13mm bolt hole) on the exhaust pipe between cat & back box ?? On other V6's there's often a 13mm bolt you can remove to put emissions probe into so you can determine which cat is failing..

thanks, steve
