Just discovered the front number plate is missing from my Wife's Corsa. There is no sign of broken plastic bolts, so it looks like some lowlife has unscrewed it.  How do we stop this trash ?

General Discussion Area / Having problems with Paypal ?
« on: 11 April 2008, 21:00:06 »
I got caught recently with a fleabay auction, that was supposedly covered by Paypal's garantee. This didn't happen, I was going to be out of pocket, however my Daughter mentioned  the Financial Ombudsmen Service, http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/default.htm and guess what Paypal have signed up to this, even though they have relocated to Luxembourgh, to quote the FO "when PayPal relocated from the UK to Luxembourg it elected to remain covered by the ombudsman service on a voluntary basis, in order to maintain the confidence of its English-language customers throughout Europe".  So if you have a problem with Paypal, you might like to just mention the Financial Ombudsmen and how they have agreed to be covered by it, in your communication.  :y  Its nice to have a suitable Name to drop in to a conversation  :y

General Discussion Area / Spooky Laptop !
« on: 11 March 2008, 21:13:41 »
My Boss's Xbox died recently, the ring of death, and that nice Mr Gates offered to fix it for him. He brought it in today, and we boxed it up and put it on the shelf.
I had just finished doing a main board replacement on a HP DV2000 laptop, fitted the HD etc, and powered it up to make sure it was still working. Win XP loaded up ok, and I was just relaxing when up came a message about how Windows had detected a new Xbox 360 and was going to add it to some group or other. How did it know there was an Xbox in the room ?. I hadn't fitted the wireless card yet  :o :o :o  Spooky  :o :o :o

General Discussion Area / MOT time, again...
« on: 09 March 2008, 16:28:49 »
My Omega is due for its test this week. Just been out and adjusted the handbrake in the "Approved Manner" (should come on within one click, yes ? ;D ;D). That's one thing I don't like doing cause it seems to slacken off within a couple of months and  would need re-adjustment.

I think its time I got a decent jack, the current one only goes up 310mm which is not really enough to get the axle stand up to a decent height. Wonder if the neighbours would mind me putting a four post lift on the front drive !!!

I am slowly but surely gettting fed up with the whole business. So much crap, people not completing auctions etc, its a real pain. Tonight I won 4 hard drives out of 10. She emailed back to say she only had 6 so I loose out. Then out of the last 7 auctions 2 others are bad. Hi to Amanda; I won an auction for a 512m DIMM, she sent a SODIMM, that doesn't fit, I returned it but she hasn't bothered refunding me. And another clown who didn't send an item or respond to 3 emails. I started the Ebay proceedure (no don't laugh, well all right then...) and it decided that despite the seller living in Luton, the deal was on the US Ebay site, so I had to file over there.

And Laptops, you know they banned lead in solder ?. Well the lead was there for a very good reason, it remains ductile when set, unlike the new rubbish. So when the item heats up, the solder will act like chewing gum and stretch, maintaining the electrical contact. A recent example was a HP NX7000 laptop I finished repairing today. There were bad joints under the ATI graphics chip, and we had to order a new graphics card, which was not cheap. When it arrived you could see it was not new but had been reworked, guess what the ATI Graphics BGA had been resoldered. This is going to happen a lot in the future because of the rubbish solder being used, so if you got a new laptop, consider selling it soon after the guarantee has finished. And there is something faulty about HP DV6000 laptops with the Turion Chip. We had a duff one in; you can normally get a board from various sources, but there are over 20,000 of these boards on back order. Someone has screwed up somewhere, whether its design or component, or crap manufacturer, anyone's guess. And Advent 7100. A common failing on laptops is the DC socket which takes a lot of wear and tear. Normal sockets have a strap around them to support the socket, so the strain isn't taken by the contacts, but not the 7100. All the force is taken solely by the electrical connectors, I fitted a new socket, but have the feeling its going to fail soon.

In fact  the only good piece of technology i come into contact with is Miggy  :y :y :y Reliable, always starts, no matter how cold, despite the battery a bit past its best, always has enough space to carry what I want, and always carries passengers in style.

If only everything in life was as reliable as an OMEGA

General Discussion Area / Oh Dear, time to leave the country
« on: 01 December 2007, 00:33:08 »
Just seen this on Yahoo,  http://uk.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/20071130/tuk-uk-britain-racial-fa6b408_2.html some lorry driver got 10 weeks in jail and a 12month ban for "racially aggravated harassment". He bumped into someone, and called the Welsh lady driver an "English bitch". Come on, what a waste of time, that's why the Legal System couldn't be bothered catching and prosecuting the s**t who broke off my door mirror lately. Time to leave the country,or sack half the judges.

General Discussion Area / Cheap Tech 2 ?
« on: 14 November 2007, 20:41:14 »
Just spotted this on Fleabay  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=320182400802&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=011 It sounds a bit dodgy, as he has zero feedback, but he will let you pay cash and collect. It also looks as if he would sell for £700, which is very cheap considering he says there is a candi module as well. Too good to be true ?

General Discussion Area / Got my new door mirror !
« on: 09 November 2007, 11:30:32 »
After having had my door mirror broken off I finally managed to track one down. I tried the scrap yards suggested by members, but they were all sold out.  :'( So I googled for Vaux breakers and started phoning. These are rare items, there were a couple but they wanted huge amounts of cash  (£125 !), and sell very quickly. After phoning 59 yards, I managed to find a small yard down in Suffolk who took it off and sent it to me for £50. :y   Royal Mail sometimes screw up, I have had items lost in the past, but the mirror went off 1st class about mid day yesterday, and has just arrived, 11:20am, so well done to them.  :y  When I park the car at the house today, I'm rigging up a video camera and keeping it under survaillence.  ;D ;D ;D
Thanks to all who suggested scrap yards.

General Discussion Area / Did they put metal trim in facelift doors ?
« on: 05 November 2007, 15:27:22 »
Greetings,
On the search for a new wing mirror, and found this on Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190168807419&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=009 I phoned him up and he said its off a '51, but it doesn't look the same as mine. Anyone know if they put metal trim strips on the doors of facelifts ?
