General Car Chat / Alternators - differences?
« on: 02 November 2015, 11:33:10 »
After a bit of research on here I find that the PFL and FL alternators seem to be different. there seems to be some faff or issue with fitting a FL alternator with black plastic rear to PFLs... the terminals are different, it seems? Can anyone either confirm this, or indeed tell me how little/much is involved in fitting said later alternator to an earlier car.

I've basically got offer of an alternator, for very little money, which I was going to replace the bearings of, clean/repaint/smarten up, and fit. But if it's a bit of a no-no, then I'll just have to do the same on my own alternator, it will just cost a bit more time.

Cheers. My car's still stuffed after the accident but my mind is already wandering onto fixing little rattles, squeaks and noises!  ::)

General Car Chat / So.. this was my weekend...
« on: 26 October 2015, 14:14:10 »
Basically in the right-hand lane of a dual carriageway, which was the straight ahead and right lane. An Insignia to the left of me (and slightly behind) in the ahead and left hand lane decided that he wanted to be right, and so drove into me, my girlfriend, my mate who was up for the weekend I hadn't seen in over a year, and my beloved V6 'Pissy Ho' (P151 HOH)

The results below....  :'(

A crunched wing, door, and a scrape running the entire length of her - wing, both doors and rear wing. Took the indicator lens, the rubbing strip, passenger door rubbing strip.

Basically the crucial damage is the wing and door. The rear door and rear wing are paint-only damage. After an exchange of words at the roadside, where the guy was patiently explaining I was in the wrong, and suggesting things like why did I undertake him on the outside  :o ::) after a call to the insurers all is sorted. Well, sorted int he sense that it was his fault, and I can claim. However, I have yet to find out exactly how much I'm going to have to play with to repair her. Assuming all replacement parts are free he paint and labour comes to just under £900, using new parts of course takes that bill to £1900-2000.

Aside from actually removing the bloke's testes with a chainsaw, anyone got any advice when (I assume it's a case of when, not if) the insurers tell me they're not willing to pay out the £1900 repair bill. In theory we will get the repair bill down to a level which they are willing to pay. But at this point I'm just waiting for them to get back to me, re: 'authorisation' by the engineers for the work.

Having never been in an accident, I don't want to get sold guff by insurers and lose out, or miss out on anything I'm entitled. I'm just looking for a way I can get my beautiful girl back to how she should look. Not after retribution, revenge, just a shiny Omega again.  :(

General Car Chat / Made me laugh...
« on: 26 October 2015, 10:46:06 »
Found this on the AA's 'Autotrader' sort of part of their site where you can advertise cars. Probably not an absolutely 100% accurate buying guide....

"Expert Opinion

Produced between 1986 and 2003, the Vauxhall Omega is a family executive which was at one time voted the European Car of the Year (1987), but was later overshadowed by increasingly fierce competition. Today it has dated substantially, and while it is far away from the quality presented by the impressive Insignia, it offers an affordable, reliable alternative. Space inside is ample, as is the boot, while a refined and smooth ride means that it remains comfortable at all times. There are a number of petrol engines on offer, but the best is arguably the 2.2 litre diesel, which offers a bit more substance than the remaining options. Reliability and run costs aren't bad, which means that, even if the Omega isn't the most desirable, it is at least dependable."

Also they show a picture of the very very rare Omega FL coupe as a typical example picture :o

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / PFL panels! - Any colour
« on: 20 October 2015, 11:57:38 »
As above. I'll go into the gory details elsewhere on the foum, but thanks to some nice person deciding to drive into me at the weekend, I'm just scouting for any PFL door panels. I've got a probable source of some FL ones locally, however if I can get PFL ones it just saves a bit of aggro with the wiring looms etc. Also that gets me the correct side trims 'free', too.

Paint etc should be done on the insurance, hence colour not a major worry, but if anyone can help me with a NS/FUll set of PFL doors in un-rusty, as close-to-mint condition as possible, please let me know  :y

Obviously scrapes and wear not an issue, just dings and rust I'm hoping to avoid. Thanks people!  :y

Head's up OOFers.... Just grabbed the grey plastic cover/trim panel from a Vectra C today whilst I was at the scrappy getting a back bumper... The trim that covers the rear view mirror fitting and rain sensor.

Wet to pop it in place in the car park only to find that there's about an inch gap between top of the trim piece and the start of the headlining, if you want to cover the rain sensor, with a little of the mirror mounting bracket showing. To cover the top of the bracket that holds the mirror in pace will require the piece(s) to be bent a little. I can't say if the hole for said mirror will line up with the mirror, yet (don't have the right mirror yet) so it may well be a complete no-go even with fettling.

Maybe an Astra / Corsa one will work as well as /instead of the (not exactly abundant) Omega one? I will try and have a nosey in a showroom to see what other trim panels rain sensing screen-equipped Vauxhalls have, in case another one fits. However, for now, for simple 'plug n play' the Omega black plastic trim appears to be the only option.  :)

General Car Chat / 'Secret' car tricks...
« on: 07 October 2015, 15:14:43 »
Viewing a pretty interesting thread, where the Omega gets a mention (fold flat front passenger seat) and there was mention of various tricks as away of seeing extra menus/data on the MID/GID of the Corsa, Vectra, etc. Does anyone know of any way of bringing up any such 'secret' data on the Omega? I presume it's a Tech2-only job.  :-\

General Discussion Area / Know of any Novas?
« on: 06 October 2015, 16:06:00 »
My missus has decided the next car for her is a Nova. We've both always had a soft spot for them, the engine bay alone compared with a certain rear-wheel drive V6 lady I might mention would be frankly joyous to work on. Be great to work on a dinkier version of the Mk II/III cavs engine that I remember from my childhood.

Basically we're looking for one of those 55k from new, 2 owners, any trim level, unused spare in the boot, etc.. for £500, type of car.  8) Of course everything's a compromise, and of course we're most likely not going to find a rust-free example with all the aforementioned. But as with Pissy the V6, she'd be never leaving the family, so the better the condition and the less work to be done in the longrun the better. It's a keeper, not for bodging through every MoT, kind of car.

So, if everyone would be kind enough to 'put the feelers out' just in case one comes in as a trade-in, or your neighbour has had one sat in the garage for the last 5 years etc.. please let us know.

You've probably guessed, but a chavved GTE or SR is not what we're looking for, a white 1.0 in poverty spec is literally ideal for our purposes.  :) Thanks in advance chaps!

Reading up on Limited Slip Diffs (apologies to hard drugs users who were expecting a different tread) found the below article, with an interesting discussion on diffs, and they also mention the Omega, with reference to diff wear...

General Car Chat / What's it worth?
« on: 01 October 2015, 15:34:37 »
What's it worth, and would anyone be interested.

A mate's got a MFL Elite, full black leather, with the mobile phone stereo in it, all the toys, Xenon, electric everything, etc. MV6 black leather interior. V6 of course, high mileage (about 200k if memory serves) but well looked after, he's a mechanic by trade, he does my MoTs. Had bodywork done on it, very clean back arches. Pretty clean, overall just a few small raggedy bits, average to good condition for an 18 year old car.

Are we in 2-300, or 4-500 territory? No pics, sorry, I know, that would help.  ::) Just testing the water at this point.

Assuming anyone interested on here realistically would be looking to break it. I see gtstylebaby still has his MV6 black leather interior on the heebay at (I think a very reasonable/cheap) £120, which doesn't bode well for my mate's car, really, as I'd have thought they are in a bit of demand, same for the radio/mobile phone setup, they don't seem to be particularly wanted.

Here's one for The Boy or Mark DTM, and several other, too, I'm sure.

In order to programme a separate remote fob, the PFL type, not MFL-onwards, non-IR type... can you 'clone' an existing fob, or do you need the car there? Or, to put it another way, can you do a fob reprogramming via post?

I suspect 'no' but just checking  :)

General Car Chat / V Reg PFL in Red in my local Scrappy
« on: 30 September 2015, 15:03:57 »
Just a head's up, if anyone wants anything off a 2.0 16v GLS PFL Omega, 145k,

I know it's pretty boring, but it is a prefacelift, and the first I've seen in my local scrappy for easily a year or two. I'm getting some door rubbing strips, and whatever else I can, but even for me a PFL owner, there's not much on there. Common as muck 2.0 engine, which was always pretty bulletproof, as I recall, used for many years.

Satin Red(?) metallic/pearlescent, doors already destroyed using the forklift. Very glean light grey interior. Giz a shout if there's anything you want me to put on my wants list.  :y

General Car Chat / Cheap trim panel for an estate
« on: 29 September 2015, 12:57:08 »
Just in case anyone wanted one either needed, or just worth getting as a spare for that price

http://www.vauxhall-car-parts.co.uk/acatalog/VAUXHALL_OMEGA_ESTATE_TAILGATE_MOULDING_-_Passengers_side_-_90477481.html

£4! I'd reckon about £30 ish main stealer, or half an hour to remove one from a scrapper, and then find you've bent it   :)

General Car Chat / Autobox price update
« on: 29 September 2015, 10:54:21 »
Got the larger gasket on order from the every helpful Keith at ABS, however, just for future reference here's the prices I got from Vauxhall

£56 for 20 liters Trade of the oil, or £8-odd for one litre  ;D

Smaller gasket 96014235 - £8.45
Larger gasket 96014234 - £14.95

Down from about £35-40 I'd say at regular retail for the pair, so bargains there to be had. Should you be in the market for some and get quoted higher, also feel free to demand 'my mate came in here last week and bought some at that price' etc etc.  :)

PS, yes, I know I could buy a tube of the sealant, negating the need for gaskets. I'm old-fashioned, I put the 'git' in 'gasket'  8)

General Car Chat / ATF - what's what?
« on: 28 September 2015, 14:48:12 »
By the looks of it, Castrol TQ DIII is the same as /for use with Dexron III 'boxes...

My question is at £58 for a 20litre tub... or £8-odd EACH for a 1 litre bottle, at my local B&Q I spotted some Castrol TQ DIII reduced clearance at £1 per bottle. ONE POUND per litre! Any issue with using this in my 'box? Opie Oils sell it, and by all accounts it seems fine.

I have read that Fuchs titan 4000 is thought of as oil of choice, but just checking it's not known as the devil urine, or anything  :y

New screen's in.. only thing is, after asking on repeated phone calls and being told the screen and trim are there on the order, and even there on the shelf... had word from my girlfriend who stayed in today to wait for Autofarce to show up... they've cleared off saying they don't supply the rubber trims.

Now this I can believe, fair enough, though they do bent and get mishapen a fair bit when you take them in and out, so by reusing my old trim (which in itself, may have been removed more than once before I owned the car) it's most likely not a very nice fit/seal.

I can get one off a scrapper just up the road, however should I am I just being lied to again? Given the old one was bent and distorted, surely part of 'the job' as paid for my Mr Insurance should include this trim. That and the fact I have been told that it would on several occasions.

Anyone else had theirs included with their screen replacement?  :)
