General Discussion Area / Poor toilet hygiene
« on: 23 October 2019, 12:06:22 »
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-50140871

A study concludes poor toilet hygiene is behind E coli outbreak.

No shit Sherlock! Mrs V and myself are appalled at the number of folk using toilets in public and not washing their hands after either a number 1 or a number2 . We avoid food outlets with toilets themselves that are not up to standard but you cannot help if the staff rent cleana

General Discussion Area / Numpty two routers question
« on: 19 October 2019, 19:49:15 »
I have a Linksys E1200 version1 router on my satellite modem.

Checked the software and it is running version 2 software since over a year ago. I have no recollection of installing it. Tried today to install vers 1.0 firmware with no success. Did factory reset and was surprised to see it still had ver 2 firmware. Reason for trying to change it is I am having internet problems and supplier says their service is working fine.

Anyway enough of background. If I buy another identical but later router could I easily use the older router on the end of a long ethernet cable from a port on the new router elsewhere in the house.? Operative word is easily

General Discussion Area / Drugs like cocaine
« on: 11 October 2019, 13:23:26 »
Anyone see the item that suggested around 570,000 helpings of cocaine are served up in London each day!

When I was in Scarborough recently people were smoking weed openly.

Is society tolerating drug use because it helps the economy?   Too difficult to stop supply lines? Too much money being paid to the police to be elsewhere? The going rate for a policeman to be “ elsewhere” when a drug boat lands in Southern Spain is a measly 60k apparently.

Does it matter?

General Discussion Area / Fondue
« on: 04 October 2019, 22:24:42 »
Anyone old enough to remember fondue?

Opened a box last week with a complete fondue set. Last used at least twenty years ago.

So we got some gruyere and Emmental , white wine etc.

It will probably be another twenty years before we get it out again. Might sell it on ebay.  Stillgot the original box!

Anyone still use a fondue set regularly?Maybe something more adventurous like cooking meat in boiling oli or strawberries in molten chocolate?

General Car Chat / Cruise on manual cars
« on: 02 October 2019, 10:59:31 »
Had plenty of cruise/auto.

Have a gutless Corsa on hire and was surprised to see cruise on it.

Discovered that you can change gear and it doesn't disconnect cruise. Never too late to learn stuff.

General Discussion Area / Brexit final offer
« on: 02 October 2019, 08:36:49 »
Well today is the day.

Will it be a breakthrough that both sides can work with?

Is it just grandstanding? Going through the motions as we head for the 31st Oct.

As Cleverly says , it is the moment of truth. Maybe it is just a moment of truth of many more.

General Car Chat / EML Ford Fiesta
« on: 26 September 2019, 20:47:10 »
Well my dads 18 month old Fiesta had the EML light come on tonight. He just pulls over and switches off and it is gone when he restarts. By EML I mean the yellow spanner and in info section White spanner - see manual.

Seems he has had it before and taken it to main dealer and they just go outside drive up and down  and say nowt wrong with it and toss him the keys.

Would I be right in saying a code reader would show stored codes ? Would it be for each occurrence or one per issue regardless of number of times it has happened?

General Car Chat / Ever had a car stolen?
« on: 24 September 2019, 13:21:45 »
Just wondered how widespread car, van or motorcycle etc theft is among forum members?

Thinking back for me it is three.  A Cooper S , a Capri and a Carlton CDX.

General Discussion Area / A deal might be done
« on: 19 September 2019, 18:11:37 »
Juncker seems to think a deal can be done.

I wonder if those UK MPs saying  a no deal shouldn't be allowed realise how much it has focussed minds. No deal might be less than ideal for the UK but it isn't good for a number of European economies either.

Mind you plenty might still go wrong

PS anyone see that the EU / South America trade deal TWENTY years in the making to cover 750 million people has foundered. How long will a trade deal with an exited UK take to strike.......

General Car Chat / Ruddy tyres
« on: 14 September 2019, 18:00:11 »
I was sort of pleased when our car had not got a spare wheel. We used the space to good effect on our UK trips.

However when we got the car, I changed the front tyres as they were a bit cracked and were getting on a bit. Then we had a puncture in one of the fronts. The hole was big enough to put a finger in it. No puncture glue and electric pump kit could fix that. No problem. All car insurance here includes compulsary recovery ( including from home).

So new tyre. So much for Industry 93000 miles between punctures.

Today tyre pressure loss flashed on screen . Used the electric pump to good effect to re inflate. Went to local garage and predictably couldn't be repaired. Strange damage. Something had entered he edge of the tyre on the curved bit at an angle but not right the way through. So non repairable.

New tyre needed so had to have two as they are hot on the MOT here on different makes on same axle. Saturday so couldn't get matching Pirelli P zero as closing at 1.00pm

The guy was a bit put out when I said “ Are I they good tyres”? His response “Michelin, they are the best”. So now have Pilot sports .Bit disappointed as I always have all four same make. Hey Ho!

Only good news is , I kept the good tyre. My plan is to find a scrap yard and get a jack, tool kit and a spare full size alloy OR possibly a spacesaver and kit.

Anyone have experience of spacesavers or what to look for when buying S/H ?. The spare wheel well is big enough for a full size spare. Car is Mk7 Golf.
