Well today is the day. After a long study by New Zealand students they are today going to reveal a plausible explanation. I hope it isn't swimming circus elephants. ;D

It will make for a pleasant diversion to the B word.

Regardless of your political views , he is a strange fellow.

There are some brilliant memes going around following his slouching episode.

Minister for 1870 , serving North East Somerset (itself a strange place.....)

The tin pot dictator ( wee krankies words) has done it now.

If only the MPs had done their job properly including Theresa May we could have had a proper deal including free trade by now with no ridiculous backstop.

The Brazillians are burning down rain forest to make more space to raise cattle.

They export the live cattle to countries like Turkey.

There is a ship in the Med , the Julia MK with 3800 young cows on board . Cannot dock in Cartagena for more fodder due to a legal dispute. So they are likely to die.

Ah beef. Mmmm

General Discussion Area / Cool your car tip
« on: 24 August 2019, 08:54:28 »
Seeing as you are experiencing high temps, here is a tip to quickly cool your car down when it has been parked in the sun.

1. Open passenger window fully.

2. Open and shut the driver door five times

That is it!  It seems to work. Must be something to do with creating movement in the air.

General Discussion Area / Gig/zero hour economy
« on: 23 August 2019, 10:07:29 »
Quite a bit of focus on the subject of poverty across Europe. From memory 22% of UK and 26% of Spain live at or below poverty line.

A 53 year old neighbour only gets occasional farm work in the winter months. The rest of the time he lives on dole of 430 euros a month.

I suspect the meteoric rise of the gig economy hasn't helped . Those in work on contract, can afford and no doubt feel they deserve a takeaway delivered by a zero hours worker.

Condoned by a “Conservative “ government. Swung the other way no doubt by a “Labour” government.

What does the team think?

General Discussion Area / The Repair Shop
« on: 20 August 2019, 20:05:30 »
No doubt forum members have a love hate relationship with the programme.

I bet quite a few forum members identify with some of the skill areas and crucially have the patience to work there. More importantly there will be people with their own specialisms like watchmaker repairs.

My mantra has always been “ If two hands made it, I can fix it or make one”. Doesn't always work . We have a shed full of kit like spraying machine for staining furniture ( to save paying the company) that saved money on someone else doing a job for us.

Anyone else like the programme?

General Car Chat / Mot and electronic handbrakes
« on: 19 August 2019, 16:18:37 »
Just idle curiosity .

In the UK how does the MOT tester do the handbrake test on the rollers? Does being auto ( dsg) make a difference to how the tester does it.?

In Spain the vehicle owner does most of the test in the driving seat. If you have any doubts over what to do the tester can do it for you.

General Discussion Area / Didcot cooling towers demolished
« on: 18 August 2019, 13:20:49 »
Latest change to UK skyline as more cooling towers have been demolished.

It got me thinking about the changing face of England. I remember some of the coal fired power stations cooling towers being built. Impressive stuff at the time. When I could see Ferrybridge looming I knew I was about halfway home. Same with the iconic slag heaps alongside the A1. Now they are green spaces ,landscaped to an extent and even have trees.

Anyone else have memories of these dinosaur landmarks ?

General Discussion Area / Policing the British seas post Brexit
« on: 10 August 2019, 13:46:42 »
Nice leak , no doubt by the Remain side.

Apparently we haven't enough vessels to police fishing incursions. Hands up all those that thought we just need to blow one out of the water to deter anyone else...... You naughty people!

A bigger worry , it is suggested, might be the terrorists, smugglers and people traffickers that will also be able to avoid our woefully small fleet of policing vessels. But hang on a minute. Is it a problem now pre Brexit? Are we being helped by EU policing vessels? I am guessing not but might be under estimating the contribution by the French in the Manche.

Perhaps some orders for new cutters could be placed with Clydeside?

Not going well for them.

The other day they had a plane full of smoke due to a “technical issue” as it came in to land at Valencia. Is a fire a technical issue?

Now it is a failure of two computer systems . 100 flights cancelled. Whatever happened to having “ back up systems”?

Imagine when we are all stationary in our autonomous cars because of failure of a computer system.

General Discussion Area / Ceramic sink
« on: 31 July 2019, 22:23:13 »
We are revamping a part of our house and we wanted a simple ceramic sink with drainer.

First shock is the price. Second is Spanish Amazon etc perhaps understandably, want 100 or so euros for delivery within Spain.

Mrs V spotted the same sink on Amazon uk for the same price and free delivery......to Spain. So we have bought the item. Delivery in a week or so. Maybe it is coming direct from the factory in Eastern Europe.

Will it arrive with no extra charge or will something pop up like the vendor cancelling the order?

General Discussion Area / Stop Brexit man
« on: 25 July 2019, 14:52:58 »
Not a politician but the fellow camped outside the houses of parliament with an App so he can see when News is being broadcast live.

As well as making gutteral  "Stop Brexit" he does actually comment as news items are broadcast.  ;D

I think when Brexit is stopped he will become a Sir no doubt , for dedication to duty.  :y

The other thoughts I have are :

Why is someone allowed to wave an EU flag on a fifty foot pole on every live broadcast? More pertinently has whoever put the row of EU flags on the Houses of parliament got planning permission? Probably not necessary as the mayor of London has probably given it the nod.   Would you be allowed to do that outside Brussels HQ?

General Car Chat / Saw a funny roof load today
« on: 19 July 2019, 23:31:59 »
We used to regularly see overloaded vehicles on our local Spanish motorway. Not so many nowadays.

A few months ago we followed at a distance a saloon car with a double bed mattress on the roof. First corner after leaving the motorway it fell off onto the wet road. No problem just got out and put it back on. Only gravity holding it on. We could only guess what the recipient said when it arrived all dirty!

Today we followed and passed a Peugeot 206 on the motorway with a very large box on the roof. Held on by three loops of string through the windows. You could see it was loose as it kept lifting up in the wind . The passenger was trying to hold it down with his arm/hand. The box? It was a very large new flat screen TV way too large to go inside his car or any average car.

Like in Britain , we rarely see any police anymore on normal patrol.

Anybody else see stuff like this?
