General Discussion Area / Good day at Goodwood yesterday
« on: 28 July 2016, 19:42:29 »
My annual trip to Goodwood races and the only time I ever have a bet. I enjoy it as a really good day out, with winning as a nice bonus. First race 12/1 winner, 2nd race 9/2 winner, 3rd race 15/8 winner and 6th race 14/1 winner. My wallet went home much thicker then when I arrived. :) :) :)

Where I know nothing about horse racing I've found using the DT tipster Marlborough normally means a couple of wins, but this year he excelled himself. :y :y :y

A robot toy controlled through an SDK. Like the UK first mass market consumer computer the ZX80 and more recently the Raspberry Pi and alike, is this just a toy that will quickly be put in a cupboard and forgotten or the start of a whole new consumer market and area of entertainment and learning, while having fun?

General Car Chat / 1,000,000 Corvette

24 years a go, it was produced at their Kentucky plant, the panels signed by the production line workers. It was wheeled into the GM museum and put on display in the Corvette section.

And then what happened?

A sinkhole opened up beneath it and it fell in. :o :o :o :o

1200 man hours later it was restored to pristine condition, including preserving all of the signatures. :y :y :y

General Discussion Area / New 1x1 pixel virus scam
« on: 22 June 2016, 23:35:25 »
1x1 pixel images with their url and data string are used a lot on websites for 3rd party sales tracking including cashback schemes.

Scammers are now using this technique by infecting popular adverts with 1x1 pixel malware. They use the malware to find who your ISP is and then a popup message will appear with 'Your ISP" branding" warning you that your computer has been infected with a virus and to call the following number. >:( This is a nasty twist on the normal cold calling virus scam but being forewarned is forearmed.

These are wars that aren't declared and often denied, that have no troops in the conventional sense and some fronts may only exist in cyberspace. These are also wars that we don't know if we are winning or losing and we have no insight into if or when they will ever end. This is the ugly and uncertain face of 21st century warfare.

I have taken three stories from the last week to illustrate different aspect of this:

Social media live streaming of an attack and double murder in France, where the perpetrator uses his crime as a recruitment video:

http://www.rferl.org/content/social-media-live-streaming-video-challenges/27806537.html

Hybrid war takes many forms, on many fronts. like in Euro 2016:

Cyber warfare can affect anybody who does anything which is of interest to another country:

For those going on holiday in Europe this year, just be aware and be on your guard that it is highly likely there will be more major European terrorist attacks during 2016.

General Discussion Area / On going eye problems
« on: 16 April 2016, 21:28:40 »
Unfortunately, only making very slow progress with my eye problems, where I have uveitis, optic neuritis and slight bleeding around my right optic nerve.

http://www.healthline.com/health/optic-neuritis#Overview1

I have been to Frimley Park eye clinic every few days for assessment and treatment, had a blood test for Lymes disease which was negative and have got an MRI scan on Monday. My right eye still has a big grey cloud in the middle of it and also to the right but it has got slightly translucent so I can now see if a bright spot light is on or off when the light is hidden by the grey cloud The only sight I have in this eye is just some blurred left phephreral vision, so I struggle to read the top line of an eye chart as I can't see the right side of it. My left eye is somewhat better with just a slight grey cloud in the lower left peripheral vision and some slight loss in the centre which looks like it has had a coat of whitewash over it, so if I look at a page of text or a PC screen the black writing appears as white gaps where the text should be. Low light vision is virtually non existent, so have to use a torch to see any detail, when looking in a cupboard etc

Loss of sight is obviously debilitating, but the worse part is you know what you see contains much less information compared with normal vision, interacting with the outside world when walking requires much higher concentration so you don't miss things.

The first episode of this in November took about 3 months to recover from and I'm only 2 weeks into treatment this time, but I and my GP did respond much more quickly this time, but the right eye symptoms are still bad, but hopefully with a bit of time I will make a full recovery, but there are no guarantees!

uveitis according to the nhs is the most commom cause of partialo sightenress vand nblindness, so feelo nature is playing Ruiian rullette with my eyesightQ Hoping tomorrow will be  better afer a bad day today, where aprt frmthe visual loss, the right side of my face feels like exploiding from the pain, the my upper and lower jaw joining in the intense pain.
