I'm not exactly saying that my Mrs orders a lot from Amazon, but we got an email today asking if we were ordering for a business as we could have VAT receipts  ::)

5.7 million people are on the NHS waiting list for treatment in England. That's fractionally over 10% of the population. One in every ten people waiting to be called in .....Jeez.

General Discussion Area / Nat West Bank found guilty
« on: 07 October 2021, 19:02:07 »
By the financial watchdog for not adhering to anti money laundering rules.  Apparently, a jeweller from Bradford liked to put a few quid into his business account now and again. Well...he is a jeweller, they take in a few Bob, don't they?

From the Independent:

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) alleged the bank failed to monitor suspect activity by a client who deposited £365m over the five-year period, including £264m in cash.

General Car Chat / Used car prices getting stupid
« on: 05 October 2021, 16:00:44 »
I told you a while back what my wife's car was valued at on autotrader. It's gone up again. 66 plate astra 1.6 cdti automatic. We paid £10,100 for it 3.5 years ago with around 9000 miles on it. It now has just short of 40,000 miles on it.

Crazy. But, of course, that's only a paper valuation. Whether someone would actually pay that.... :-\

Ok
From Yorkshire Live:

Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab dismissed Labour's call for 100,000 migrant visas and instead has suggested offenders who have been given community sentences are used as HGV drivers.

I am going for this years flu jab tomorrow. The lady who made my appointment asked me if I'd had a covid booster jab within the last seven days. I haven't, of course. When I said that I was under the impression that you could have both together, one in each arm, as was suggested earlier by Boris and his cronies, she chuckled and said "No, that's not the way it works. They cannot be given within a week of each other".

Queues at all of the fuel stations this morning, bedlam at ASDA. There is no shortage, but the news said BP had had to close a couple of filling stations due to shortage of delivery drivers and there 'might' be a shortage of diesel and unleaded. There will be now.

General Car Chat / Advice needed ref astra 1.6 diesel
« on: 02 September 2021, 14:44:03 »
I've just had a letter from Vauxhall which reads, more or less, as follows:

This letter is to inform you of a customer satisfaction programme to reduce the exhaust emissions of your vehicle...........An authorised Vauxhall Repairer will carry out a software update to your emissions control system..........Your vehicles fuel economy, performance and noise level will be unaffected.
Please contact your nearest......blah, blah

Now I know a couple of people who had this update done a while back. Not to a Vauxhall, but to VAG cars after dieselgate. My next door neighbour had an Audi TT Black and, when he got it back, he said it was gutless. Of course, once it's done, there's no going back. I have a service plan in place with Vauxhall, and I'm concerned that when I take it in in October for MOT and service, they'll do the update whether I say I don't want it or not.

Has anyone got any experience of this particular update or of it on other makes. Thanks.

General Discussion Area / Ambulance
« on: 19 August 2021, 22:20:43 »
Anyone been watching this? I can't quite fathom just how these paramedics had the strength to carry on. Attending covid cases one after the other over a 12 hour shift, with nothing more to protect them than a standard issue mask and a flimsy apron. The painful decisions they had to make and the grief of family members.
My admiration and my gratitude has increased greatly since I've seen what they actually went through.
