Goes to show that you never know.
Our pedigree snow leopard cat went missing on Aug 5th. Unlike him as he had wandered happily around the immediate area for over two of his three and a half years .
We live in a densely wooded area with overgrown fields on all sides . There are maybe twelve houses within a 400 yard radius .
On the 6 Aug. we were told by one who lives right on the edge of that radius that he ( Murray ) had spent the afternoon in her garden but as he had no collar on ( I found it in the grass midway between mine and their house ) she did not pick him up or secure him. On the 7 Aug I spent the day scouring that area and further afield but couldn't find him . I did speak to two other neighbours who told me that they had seen him at their houses on the evening of the 5th . That was the last sighting we knew off and as the days passed we kept searching but our hopes of finding him dwindled . My wife wouldn't give up though and used every local and not so local social media websites to spread the word that he was missing along with numerous photos to show his striking appearance . Posters were put up all around the area with all contact details but no sightings were reported.
Then we offered a handsome reward .........

I got a call on the evening of the 15 Aug asking if he was still missing and was then told that one of these three people had posted a sighting on " whats app " whatever that is ....Now this person had my mobile number but didn't call it . I and my wife  followed up the sighting at the exact point wading through scrub, gorse nettles and rough rough ground but found nothing . After an hour in the driving rain we gave up disappointed but a little happier that he at least had been seen.
Just as we were getting into our cars my wife got a call from that same person that he had spent the afternoon in her garden of the 5 Aug to say that she had him and to come and collect him.
I drove the 3/4 mile to her house to collect Murray dreading what he would be like after living rough for 11 days and just completing a 3/4 mile walk across dense wet scrubland ,across a muddy stream and three fields of gorse, ferns and weeds up to my thighs and all in heavy rain .......

He was bone dry ,smelling fresh with an immaculate coat , a little thinner and distraught but remarkably , nay miraculously , fit and well.
This lady suggested the the BBQ that they were enjoying in the driving rain and strong wind must have attracted him , she showed no concern for him jumping up on their very expensive furnishings in their rather valuable property even though he had supposedly been living rough and feral for days ....
We kept our suspicions to ourselves and left with the cat.

We later, forensically , went over all that we had been told , witnessed and heard and concluded, without any doubt ,that a cabal of four houses and eight adults had kept ,as in stolen , him , lied to us when they met us many times out searching for him and then panicked when the social media coverage had swamped the town and surrounding area . The offer of a reward tipped the balance as if discovered they would have been shamed in the local community .
I haven't listed all the bullet points that drew us to that conclusion but there were many with equal numbers of " coincidences " rendering the sequence of events ,reported times and sightings implausible at best .
I should add that throughout the whole debacle the only three people who seen him on the day of his disappearance were the only three people who saw him on the day of his return , in the same sequence too. From something that was said to us we think the cat was destined for a son in Cork sixty miles away but for whatever reason that fell through and rather than destroy it they thankfully decided to choreograph it's return to us.
Although delighted to have him back I cannot forgive them for the suffering and anxiety that they caused my wife  over and above the distress that the cat suffered too.
No reward was given and my wife wants no confrontation to occur , but I'll have a wee word in a quiet place with two of the husbands .......

General Car Chat / Starter motor on a 2.0 16V
« on: 04 July 2018, 23:14:47 »
What cretin created the space that that fits into . >:(
Starter motors are " normally " easy to access , the two bolts are but I defy you to get to the electrical connections without severing your hand and then fitting it up with a couple of remote controlled servo motors .

Since putting the car back on the road after six months lay up I noticed a momentarily clatter when starting on a couple of occasions. Frightening noise that sounded like it had thrown a rod......
I've removed the drive belt ,checked all the pulleys driven off it and tried it with and without but it has only happened a couple of times and I couldn't get it to reoccur .
I fitted a new timing belt kit and water pump 1K miles ago and checked it all again and all is well. Engine is smooth with no untoward noises.
After much head scratching I found this on U tube which sounds exactly like the noise only mine lasted a second longer .
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYdurhynAEo
So , this morning I thinks to myself , " lets get the starter off and check it " .
FFS what's that all about  :'( I gave up trying to get to the electrical connections and just lub'd the SOB in situ . I think the RH engine mount will have to be removed to gain good access to the elect. conns.
Used the car  this afternoon but the jury is still out as to the problem being located and solved.
Grrrr.

Omega General Help / Interior blower fan running constantly.
« on: 09 June 2018, 22:00:07 »
Well after a downpour of absolutely biblical proportions I find that I've fallen victim of a blocked drain in the fan chamber resulting in the interior fan blower motor running constantly and not bein able to be switched off ,even when the ign. key is removed.. >:(
Classic symptoms of wet footwell on passenger side and three or four inches of water in the chamber.
I've cleared it ( door , horse , bolted ..... :-[ ) but the damage is done.
I've blown the chamber dry using compressed air ,detached the two connectors in the footwell and dried them , the floor and carpet has also been wet vacuumed . I've removed each and every relay in turn in the compartment next to the battery but still the fan runs . My car is an early FL but the Haynes manual is for the PFL with AC not CC . I've pulled fuse 14 under the steering column which according to the VX manual is the one relevent to the CC but still the bloody thing runs .....
The relays under the column are clearly marked and none are related to the CC or blower fan.
So gentlemen , what's the diagnosis ?
Is there a blower fan relay and if so where . Is there a resister pack for the fan that is possibly the culprit or is it the CC control module ? or is there a simple ,three second repair that a six year old could do ... :'(
I'm really pissed at this as I knew of this problem and thought I had cleared the drain when I fitted a new pollen filter . I had ,except that I replaced the filter in 2010 .

General Car Chat / An irish bureaucratic nightmare
« on: 03 May 2018, 22:51:04 »
Well after all the concerns I had over the brakes on my estate on the general help section I took the car for it's NCT ( MOT ) and it passed all the checks for a pass with flying colours  :y
However ....... the tester handed me a fail sheet .
Reason written in small print at the bottom of the sheet under visual fail was " Incorrect VIN " .
So we enter into a rather odd conversation about this issue as the car has been tested 12 times in this agency run government station and the issue has never occured or been raised before . Unlike UK here all cars have to be tested in one of these stations which are staffed and run by the most sullen , unapproachable and uncommunicative people you will find.
The reply I get is " ah , there's a new system now".
It seems that if there is any discrepancy then a fail cert is issued and the burden of proof and the effort involved in rectifying the situation falls upon the owner.
The tester handed me a sheet that I had to post , no e mail or telephone call centre  snail mail only  >:(, to the Revenue Commissioners on the other side of the country.
This sheet has a section in that the tester is asked , in his opinion , if the VIN on the car is genuine to which he scrawled a 6 year old child like Y for yes. He said that he had no doubt that the car was genuine and that the problem was the VIN registered on the National Database but the problem was mine .
So here we are in this simple somewhat backward little country. I have a car that has been registered 14 years ago in this country , tested in the same station 12 times , confirmed by the government approved tester that the VIN is genuine and correct  and untampered with and that the problem ( which he refused to actually identify other than being incorrect ) was not on the car but on the national big brother database.
In order to plead my case I have to submit my registration document ( leaving me at their mercy ) , a begging letter carefully suggesting , to avoid incurring the wrath of some cretinous uncivil servant ,that the problem may be at their end and the said sheet from the tester along with printed , signed and dated photos showing the virgin steel around the floor stamp and untouched rivits on the dash top plate showing the VIN.
The "request"  letter states in a rather overbearing and mildly threatening manner that any request to amend the database will take up to 21 days but possibly longer if the investigation requires it.
So through no fault of my own I have a car that is passed as perfectly roadworthy but cannot be used due to an error in a database somewhere in the bureaucratic world of the irish civil service. In this country no NCT = no insurance cover whilst on the road.
I started a thread on an irish car site expecting to be told that it'll be cleared up in no time  and was horrified at the stories /replies from many of the regular members re their dealings with the revenue commissioners.
It would seem their intransigence and unwillingness in accepting blame is legendary.
It would seem that I am living in a country  blessed with a guilty until self proved innocent doctrine staffed by civil servants ,whom it seems ,cannot read and then correctly write 17 digits in a row.
Thank goodness that we've pushed the button on the two year plan to move to South of France and away from this miserable ,wet and simple little  country.

Omega General Help / Brake pedal creep.
« on: 26 April 2018, 21:48:12 »
I did a search on this and found a couple of threads relating to it but there was never a definative answer.
I bled the system through last year replacing the old brake fluid . I noticed after the bleeding process that when engine off the pedal was rock hard within 1/2 inch travel , however when engine was strted the pedal became progressivly softer and if pressed HARD it could be made to travel almost to the floor.
Now it has to be said that the brakes still operated fine arresting and stopping the car way before the pedal got anywhere near the floor it also passed it's annual NCT ( MOT) test with an efficiency of 70%.
I've just went through a bleeding excercise again to try and eliminate the travel but the issue still persists with the same symptoms .
All calipers are free ,pads and discs are  well within spec ( Haynes manual ) . and the fluid is correct and new. Normally I'd suspect the MC but due to the fact that the pedal is solid when engine off casts doubt on that diagnosis.
I've bled the brakes in the correct orientation with an Eezibleed and the normal two person method and have used a considerable anount of fluid to try and ensure that there is no air in the system.
It has definatly only occured since I replaced the fluid and was not like that before.
I have no problem replacing the MC on my manual car but I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this and has a definative answer to it. Could it be air in the ABS pump or flexis balooning ?

General Car Chat / VAG
« on: 04 February 2018, 21:14:01 »
Found a chunk of plastic missing from the larger of the two cooling fan blades on my wifes Skoda Yeti causing severe vibration when it goes into re-gen mode.
Two types of fan spec'd so you have to do the job twice first to identify the bloody manufacturer and the again to actually replace it. The detail plate is on the inside of the motor   only visible when split and removed  from the mounting chassis. It takes over an hour to dismantle half the frontal upper and lower parts of the engine to remove the fan carrying chassis.
The fan consists of a 360mm dia fan and a motor. The plastic fan is flimsy to say the least.
The blade cannot be replaced so a complete assembly  has to be fitted .
Siemens one can be bought for £45 but the Brose model fitted to our car £185 plus delivery (MD quoted over £320 ) .
Utterly unbelievable that there is such value in the damned thing , and the fact that it is designed to be so time consuming to replace such a simple thing shows a fukc you attitude to the owner of the car by VAG.
A simple design change of bolting it from the engine side rather than the grill side and allowing for a replacement plastic fan to be fitted would have been so easy to do.
Ah ... but no money in that.
Whilst I had the thing in bits I had  look for the oil filter . I've been building , repairing and servicing cars for 45 years and know my way around an engine but after looking with a flex inspection mirror and bright cob led torch  all over that engine I could not find it........
Off now to find out from the Yeti owners forum .
A thoroughly complicated unfriendly awkward and expensive engine to work on .
Sorry , rant over....

Omega General Help / Number plate lights
« on: 10 January 2018, 18:23:09 »
All four screws retaining the number plate lamps on my FL estate are rusted solid and will probably result the lamp bodies being destroyed whilst freeing  them.
Both bulbs are OK at present but NCT ( mot) soon due ,sod's law and all that ........
can anyone tell me if  the FL saloon and estate the same lamp holder ?
I see saloon LED's on Ebay that I'd probably fit ,if they did  .

Omega General Help / 25.4 mm Brake master cylinder kit.
« on: 25 May 2017, 19:06:02 »
I may have to repair or replace the brake master cylinder on my late '99 FL 2.0 estate .
I thought it would be a simple case of going on Ebay and finding a suitable repair kit for the 25.4 mm MC but nothing seems available. I believe the model is a Lucas 2017 and the GM part number is GM 9193218 but ,so far , haven't found any other make that uses the two pipe unit .
I'd be surprised if the MC is unique to the Omega B .
Has anyone got a source for a kit ?
Cheers.

Omega General Help / X20Xev cams out one tooth ?
« on: 30 April 2017, 15:48:02 »
When crank pulley notch is aligned with pointer, cam marks are as photo.

When cams are aligned with mark on head .

If I am correct is it a case of keeping the crank pulley mark aligned and then ,after removing old belt , gently reseting the cams to their alignment marks ?

Omega General Help / Diagnostic kit .
« on: 25 September 2016, 22:38:33 »
'99 2.0 X20XEV FL estate .
I really need to get a low cost diagnostic set for my car and after reading another thread on the help section where an OBD2 kit was suggested for a 2.2 thought that that would be the answer .
I looked a little further into it and see that the X20XEV seemingly  requires an O p c o m  system rather than an a OBD2 can anyone confirm this ?
Seen this an similar on Ebay
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172242134658?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
If rubbish , is there a suggested diag. tool for the X20XEV Omega ?
Thanks .

Omega General Help / Peculiar leak.
« on: 16 September 2016, 18:08:34 »
There is a slight but noticeable leak of a red fluid immediately under the AC compressor on my 2.0 FL.
It's been there for some time , a couple of years some time , but as the car was laid up and only started each month it was an irritant rather than an problem.
The fluid in the catch tray under the car seems to turn to a crystaline residue after a period . I initially thought it was a leak from the PS reservoir or hoses above but all seems to be OK there ,but besides ,the colour of the leaking fluid does not match the PS fluid ( nor taste like it ) ::) .
So my thoughts are that it is leaking from the AC system .I've owned the car for 14 years and the AC was needing a recharge when I purchased it but I never bothered , could it be a dye in the system leaking past seals in the AC compressor ?
