Hi all. Reading various posts about my terrible V6 idle (well, complete lack of it) another culprit could be a faulty DIS pack. I'm hoping not, due to obvious costs etc... However, if it is I'm going to need a section of loom from a V6, including the plug, please. The reason being the previous owner (yes, dad again!  ;D ) because he couldn't get an Omega one, he got one off a Vectra V6. The plugs are different, so he spliced in with chocolate box connectors, the Vectra plug on the Omega loom.  :(

A mate is coming next week with a (Omega) DIS pack and his tools and experience, but should we need a replacement DIS pack, I'd like to re-instate an Omega plug for an Omega DIS pack.

RRight, back to first principles... Bringing the V6 back to life after years dormant. Dead battery (alleged good one, but actually dead) that's sortedb, borrowed the battery from the Turbo Weasel. But now...

Started instantly, but spluttered like hell, and refused to idle, as soon as the key is released, dies. Counteract this with the throttle, but for the five or so seconds I dared do this she sounded awful, shuddering (possibly because she was a rev or two from cutting out, possibly one or more cylinders not firing) and every second or two a regular 'cough' or 'hiccup' sound, which was metallic. Didn't sound healthy, so I dared not run her any further, in case there was something I had missed.

Further info which may help - the cam cover gaskets have been done, so everything in 'that area' has been disturbed (and in theory put back right, but obviously not guaranteed)

In your hands, as I'm a little hesitant to go firing her up againfor fear of boggering something up massively.  :(

General Car Chat / Alternative to VX bushes?
« on: 14 October 2014, 01:50:04 »
Just as I've ordered two vertical bushes for the V6, coming to £36+ I found this link a few mins ago...

Two bushes for under £20...

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Vauxhall_Omega_2.5_1999/p/Car-Parts/Suspension-and-Steering/suspension/suspension-bushes/?618720055&1&e44eb5a303b5d2e3303f306ea9e336871912a4b9&000437

Am I mad? Should I be cancelling the order from VX and getting these instead? I have heard some Lemforder quality has gone downhill - but surely these have to be good?  :-\

Omega General Help / V6 Dead Won't start - Immobiliser?
« on: 13 October 2014, 21:21:49 »
As you may be aware, I'm in the process of returning the old V6 back to the road. Came to start her up (after several years, yes, years)

Facts that may be of help:
'96 P CDX 2.5 V6
Plip - early type separate to key - doesn't lock or unlock the car, but does show blinking LEDs, so has some power
Key turns fine, on attaching the battery the MFD lit (showing, of course, 01.01.1994 or whatever year) plus electric window switches illuminated.
Upon turning all the way to start all lights go off, a very small 'click' and silence.

Going by the symptoms I'd say crank sensor - this was the reason for being laid up in the first place, but one was fitted a while later, she started, but by which time she'd been replaced with a FL CDX, so wasn't run again. So in theory the crank sensor's good.

I'd say she's not recognising the key as being the right one. At a guess I'd say the plip wants a new battery, then coding to the car/reprogramming but obviously at half 9 at night this ain't happening!

Any further questions, or support, please feel free. I'm reasonably stumped!  :'(

General Car Chat / Are wishbone bushes on Trade Club?
« on: 13 October 2014, 12:07:59 »
Just ordered two rear bushes for the front wishbones and they came to £18 each inc vat  :o - like an idiot forgot to ask if they were on Trade Club? Thought they were about a tenner plus Vat from VX??

Ok, so a fairly substantial amount of judder when I set off in the Turbo Weasel. I was worries it was Torque converter on its way or something similar, however, a few (about 50) revs cures it. Also if I set of very gingerly, this lessens it to almost imperceptible level. I first noticed it setting off from traffic lights on a gradient the other day, and it's got a little worse since then, occurring on flat ground. It's always had a slow idle, but this is now causing a bit of an issue.

Basically want to know how do I speed up the idle on these new-fangled (14 year old  :D) drive-by-wire ECU compooter cars??  :D

Thanks in advance  :)

Been messaged by OOF member Swordfish who was answering a recent request for parts I made in the For Sale/Wanted Section, only I can't reply as his inbox is full. Not sure if admins have ability to contact him/ send messages/delete oldest messages, even? Cheers if anyone can help; or, if you're out there, Swordfish, then delete some of your messages!  :D

General Car Chat / Seam Sealer or Waxoyl?
« on: 03 October 2014, 11:56:32 »
So about to drill some holes in the floorpan, just to add a little corrosion protection I'd like to pop a dab of paint in the hole and on the bolt going through.

-If I bought a tin of Waxoyl it should come in elsewhere on other sections of the chassis with surface rust - or should I be using the proper 'stone chip' paint, for these jobs instead?

-Seam sealer, well, never done any welding in my life (I've seen my soldering, so welding will end much worse!) so I know nothing about it, other than it 'seals the seam', hence the name  :D

-Blob of black Hammerite

-Something else, like black drains / gutters sealer from Wilkos (sounds silly, but I don't see why this wouldnt work, unless its actually slightly hydroscopic, or something)

Cheers in advance!  :)

General Car Chat / 'The' Omega... Progress Diary
« on: 02 October 2014, 13:44:14 »
Well, knowing that there'll be (hopefully) a fair bit of progress on my baby over the next few weeks, I thought I might as well start a thread dedicated to the journey.

OK, so to start with she's a 1996 P Reg Omega CDX 2.5 V6 in Diamond Black. Been in the family for a decade, originally owned by my father. For 7 years she's been laid up, after the crank sensor failing and then DIS pack blowing, due to leaking gaskets. Since then it's always been my dream to get her up and running, under my ownership. A spell living away and being unemployed, then unpredictable work, plus living in a town you can walk across in half an hour make running a 1.6 ton V6 barge not massively feasible.

Exhibited at Billing every year she once got a 'commended' but as she was (I think) the only vehicle in daily use up for judging, and some doing less than 100 miles between MoTs, I don't think she did too bad :). Due to a couple of mods she was once incorrectly named in an issue of the Straight Six News as an Elite(!)

So, a brief incomplete list of the mods/work done then...
-Elite eleccy rear blind
-Elite Leather door cards
-MFL rear griffin/boot handle
-Elite MFL alloys
-FL clear side lenses
-Blanked EGR
-Perfect front bumper (Transit rolled back at traffic lights and cracked the paint. Repainted by the same people that 'de-blemish' ALL brand new VAG/Toyota Group cars that enter the country via Immingham.)

After the DIS Pack blowing, my father had to get a replacement car double quick, which is when he bought the TD (Turbo Weasel) which I've now bought off him and driving (he now has one of them new fangled plastic Insignias  :D ) and so she was laid up.  :'(

A year ago the Turbo Weasel died due to him pouring approx 4 litres of water into the air intake system. So we considered reviving the V6. Genuine VX gaskets were fitted, breathers cleaned. Brakes freed off and serviced. (all relevant parts were always coppergreased, and were no harder to work on than if we'd done them a week ago - not 6 years!) Nothing else was apparent that a short-term bodge wouldnt fix, and we were just about to refit the wipers when bad news the Garage had fixed the Turbo Weasel! NOO!!  :y So, she was 90% there for an MoT but again, laid up.  :'(

So a few weeks ago, I bought the car at the only price of £170.

Which brings us to the present day. She is now sat, exhaustless, on axle stands, lathered in dust, one flat tyre, not a single matching wheel (the mint Elite wheels were sold some years ago, sadly  :'( ) scuttle and wiper arms off but the following has now been done these last couple of weeks...

-Exhaust sourced, used 6 month old as job lot of...
      Exhaust
      SC804 (two of!) and Autochanger
Bumper grilles (open type - off Diesel)
MFL Elite Grille with mesh, but included original chroem 'V' and chip cutter (and the following which I don't need, but they may well save my bacon one day)
      Climate Centre console
      Radiator
      Full set of Tail Lamps
      Engine hoses
-Exhaust clips (Genuine VX)
-Manifold to Cat section nut (Genuine VX)
-Exhaust clamps
-Paint - silver and VHT Silver
-Set of stainless steel nuts n bolts for exhaust and heat shields
-Heat Shields ('reserved' simply awaiting reply off fellow OOFer  :y)

Excluding purchasing the car all the above has cost me a pint of Guinness over £100, so I think I'm doing pretty good so far.

No pics as yet, but will try and get some uploaded tonight. the first 'before' shots, so to speak  :y

Omega General Help / Manifold > Cat Gasket Types - V6??
« on: 02 October 2014, 10:17:02 »
Just noticed on another thread that it might be an idea to change the manifold to cat gaskets on the V6. They look in excellent shape, but that's the problem - the shape.

Mine are circular but showing on the (online) EPC are normal 'gasket shaped' Anyone know why? Part numbers listed is

Cheers!

General Car Chat / Powerflex Polys - cheapest / OOF discount?
« on: 01 October 2014, 12:01:47 »
So as I trawl the interwebnet, there's something of a bottom price of £47.28 but I notice that on Powerflex's own website the price is £26.27. Of course you can't buy direct from the website, but I am just wondering why the price difference, and also if there's anywhere that OOF recommends. Alternatively if it was worth us contacting a specific ebay seller, for instance, and haggling a ??% off if we bought a certain number. I'm sure there's plenty of people still to fit Polys to their Omegas.

Omega General Help / Heat shield threads sheared, help!
« on: 01 October 2014, 09:33:57 »
Thread holding the V6 heat shield on has sheared, (in the market for two rearmost heat shields BTW  :y)

Clearly this has happened before, as a previous owner (father) has drilled into the floorpan and fitted self-tapper screws on a couple of points.

My question is... what do we think the best option here is, to make good the situation. I stress the shield will go back on, and won't be hanging off, but I'd like to do a proper repair, not a 'bodge until next time'

Here's my plan. IF i can see where the holes enter the cabin (presuming underneath a seat) and I can get a stainless bolt down a pre-drilled hole, then put a nut on the underside to secure, replace heatshield, then another nut to secure the shield. What do we think?

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / WTD: Heat Shields! Got any?
« on: 01 October 2014, 09:25:23 »
Rearmost two heat shields are pretty crusty. (Plan was to whip them off and paint, but these two have had it) I'm expecting all Omegas to be similarly rubbish, but should anyone have some decent ones. (surface rust is no worry, as I say, I'll be painting them with VHT paint) Or if anyone can direct me to somehwere that may have ex-stock/old discontinued parts?

General Car Chat / General Consensus on 'Best' Suspension choice?
« on: 30 September 2014, 14:49:22 »
So... as I slowly get the V6 back on the road after a tiny hiatus (of 7 years) I am sure the dampers are shot, she's bouncing like a 70s Cadillac. I have pattern wishbones which will be receiving Polys and genuine VX bushes. SO when it comes to dampers as far as I understand it Bilstein B4s seems to be the OOF recommended option. Slightly better and cheaper than original VX. I'm looking for as solid and controlled a ride as possible, without losing too much of that Omega waftability comfort.

I'm assuming that the suggestion of replacing the springs will also appear in this thread - which I am open to.

So, I'm thinking some facelift MV6 springs, plus Bilstein B4s... any other options I'm not aware of/forgotten?

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / WTD: Diamond Black Panels
« on: 30 September 2014, 13:41:39 »
At some point be wanting to repair/replace

-front OS wing
-driver's door.
-Rear doors - IF there happens to be a low mileage model being broken which is free of the usual bubble of rust beneath the window rubbers and bottom corner, ahead of the wheelarch; then these, too. (though rust is only minor on my rear doors)

Obviously cost of second hand panels in the right colour far less than Bodyshop repair/respraying of existing panels. It's a back-burner request one at present, but I thought I'd mention it now, just so people know there's an OOFer on the lookout. I know it's not the most common colour, so thought I'd start the search early :-) (She's not MoTd yet! Hence it being very much a 'back burner' thing  :y )
