General Car Chat / White Van Man for the day
« on: 19 November 2013, 09:56:40 »
Hired this at the weekend to move out of my flat, now in Kingston until we get the house.

61 plate 3.5 ton Luton Transit, when I first picked it up, my god how it bounces around  :o

Rides a lot better with some decent weight in the back, but empty the ride is appalling. Liked the arm rest, general driving it was not bad, but it made a lot of noise, at 70 could barely hear yourself speak.

Did around 130 miles in it in total, to around £35 of diesel. So not too bad I thought, but after a very, very long day off emptying my flat, unloading van at Kingston and another drop off I was nackered. Climbed into the 3.2 at around 11PM after a long day, bum warmer on, popped it in D, drove down same roads as earlier in the Transit. Was like riding around in silk compared to before, silky smooth power, silence driving. Ahhhh.

It's put me off a diesel manual though, I found myself constantly changing gear and such a narrow power band.  :o

Can anyone recommend a WiFi 3G dongle, that is PAYG but with decent download limit? Like 5gb or even unlimited?

General Car Chat / I must admit...
« on: 05 November 2013, 20:44:18 »
I really got to like my 3.2 past few days, many will know I've found it perhaps not as good as I thought it would be. But since fixing the exhaust, it's really started to grow on me. Myself and little fatty popped a new exhaust on it, all fitted ok, but after time the pipes to back box became loose. Gave lot of engine noise I think, once it got so bad that it rattled into the back box from centre pipes, since tightening all that up, it's been much better.

Was invited to Bath by MrsT's Uncle, who hired an enormous house right in the city near the Abbey. I would be driving up MrsT's sister and fiancée too, so 4 up, along with boot full of "stuff" knowing what the ladies are like  ::) - plus some idiots put an LPG tank in my 2.2's boot, so lacking space needed.

I opted to take 3.2, much as I love my 2.2, 4 up fully loaded it struggles. Also we needed to pop to Witney, so again, needed more go. Just effortless going through London and up motorway, fully loaded boot, 4 up. Sheer pleasure to drive, quiet, smooth, and went well.

The drive to Witney was a pain, main road to M4 shut, so off down the country lanes. Everything got in the way, running late, stuck behind every 40mph driver going. Did plenty of overtakes, of 40-80 down country lanes, effortless even 4 up. Lots of pulling out onto main roads, no problems there, 0-60 pulling out quick & easy  8) - no fuss

Must have had fun, burnt through a tank in 245 miles  :o  ;D

Sunday we came home, sheer monsoon conditions, plus I was shattered, lots of walking and good meals, I was tired. Yet again glad I took an auto, nice easy drive back even though seriously busy. Rear tints are nice, really takes all the glare out from morons who leave full beam on or craply adjusted lights.

Using 3.2 again this weekend, up to Darlington, again heavy loaded up. Looking forward to it, apart from maybe the fuel bill  ::)

Omega General Help / Blend Flap - Vents
« on: 30 October 2013, 13:51:14 »
Does anyone have a photo or point out where the blend flap solenoid/arm is from the passenger footwell?

Drivers/Centre air vents hot, passenger one is cool.

Thanks

Omega General Help / Heater Matrix Flush, hot or cold?
« on: 29 October 2013, 20:08:15 »
Been using my trusty 2.2 mostly these past months, need to get the 3.2 out and about. (Its better for 4 up touring  ::)) The heat has been poor from the vents, so going to flush matrix. Did confirm top pipe into matrix is hot, bottom one Luke warm.

Read jimbobs guide, done some research. Going to soften the hose pipes in hot water, but some say to get car hot first so that the bulk head pipes are hot. Worth doing, or cause too many issues with hot V6 lump in the way?  :-\

Omega General Help / Manual Gearbox Oil Change
« on: 28 October 2013, 19:54:44 »
On the 2.2, its now 166k old and I've never touched the fluid. No real problems, but just think it's due as I maybe using it more for commuting soon.

Done a bit of research, found this old thread with DTM's instructions:

http://oldsite.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1166171922/6

1) Is 93165290 still right part number?
2) As it's so old, I think i'll do the full flush. So 3 litres enough for full fill, drive, drain, then fill?
3) Is it worth adding anything to oil, as previously suggested. (Slick 50 or Molyslip)?
4) How on earth can you tell the fluid is 8/9mm from the fill hole? When re-filling  :-\

Thanks in advance  :y

General Discussion Area / Views on front garden to driveway
« on: 24 October 2013, 17:34:46 »
So my *hopeful* new place, has a brick driveway, with garage. Which is great, but I need additional parking, looking at converting front garden into another space, I'll use this one with 2.2, with 3.2 on the bricks.

A few early investigations suggest that tarmac the whole area would be around £2k + vat, money I don't really have given everything else the new place is costing.

I was thinking of two "strips" up the garden, made of gravel or similar. The issues are the inspection hatches, which I think are water/electric meters. It looks like the right hand larger hatches are metal, i need to confirm. The smaller one looks like water, so would need to avoid this as I don't think driving over it is a good idea.

Gravel the whole area maybe another idea, rather than strips? Think that would cost around £1k?  :-\ (assuming DIY)

Thoughts?

General Car Chat / Insignia Auto boxes
« on: 20 October 2013, 08:31:57 »
Are the reliable? It would be a CDTi / Auto combo, possible it could rack up a lot of miles so wondering if they are as solid as the Omega?

General Discussion Area / attenuation tank
« on: 10 October 2013, 18:03:29 »
Anyone have any experience of these, been informed that there is one under the garden of my "new new" place which we are in the process of buying.

A quick Google suggests these are a way of controlling water into the surrounding soil? So if we get a major down-pour, water goes into this tank (through top soil I imagine?), can stay there then is slow let out? Rather than saturating the ground?

Anything to look out for?

It's practically brand new, houses finished Nov 2012.  :)

General Car Chat / I thought it was rare
« on: 08 October 2013, 10:38:11 »
Out for a walk with MrsT in Acton, number of times I've seen a classic Mustang parked up, had a good nose over it the other day. I'm 99% sure it's a 1969 Shelby GT 350 Fastback, it's a little tatty on the outside but nothing too bad, manual gearbox by the looks of things. Not much and it would be a mint example, other than being White, it's identical to this:

Must be cool being a Priest as it always parked outside the Church, looking at prices they often are not listed, not surprising think its quite rare, especially for UK

Must take some pictures next time I walk past.

General Car Chat / Astra J - Clutch
« on: 07 October 2013, 09:19:54 »
Work colleague has a '61 Plate Astra J, he had to take train in today as his clutch has failed. sub 20k miles, foot to the floor on the clutch  :o

Quick Google suggests fairly common problem? He says it had "extra" power from the dealer, cost him £2k upgrade  ???  ??? ???

Think he has been had to be honest, no idea on the engine though  :-\

General Car Chat / Headlight Bulb gone, but why...
« on: 04 October 2013, 19:11:27 »
... is it always the passenger side! Bought the 2.2 in 2005, around 2008 front passenger headlight bulb went, so popped some night breakers in there.

Then just before my Austria trip this winter, the passenger light blew. (the day before I was due to go!)

Guess what came on the MID yesterday & guess which side of bulb has gone  ::)

Also means Halfords bulbs are shit, as the previous Osram Night-Breakers lasted 4 years easy, Halfords? Less than 9 months!  >:(
