Omega General Help / Handbrake drum / disc
« on: 31 July 2014, 12:02:31 »
The handbrake is barely holding now, and with the MOT test due next month, thought I'd set about checking the shoes, adjusters and cables. As always I like to refer to any maintenance guides which are on here, and of great help.

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90580.0

Wheel off, pads out, caliper off, and supported (with all the usual associated jacking and axle stands etc)...... but can I get the disc off? Hell no! Gentle taps and persuasion all to no avail. I've worked on many brakes in the past, so am familiar with adjusters and shoes, but I can't for the life of me see any adjustment wheel through the hole, in the hope of backing the shoes off slightly, if that's what's causing the disc to stay put.

Admittedly it looks like this is the first time in 135K miles that the calipers have been removed, and no doubt the shoes haven't seen the light of day since assembly back in the year 2000.

So the question is - why can't I see any means of adjustment inside, and is there any other type of adjustment that isn't featured in the maintenance guide?

In the meantime I think I'll tackle the rust on the wheelarch, whilst the wheel is off..... might as well do something useful whilst I ponder this problem.

V6 2.5 lump - did the cam cover gaskets at the weekend, all put together and doesn't want to start.

I was meticulous (or so I think) in putting everything back as it was, all plugs and sockets, pipes routed nicely without risk of chaf, checked and doubled checked at every stage and took my time.

Codes 12 and 31 flashing on dashboard with paperclip test.

Just in case, crank sensors swapped between other good working car, so definately know they are alright.

Only code 12 flashes when engine turning over, and counted at least 6 times with no other codes showing - didn't want to try any longer in case of flattening battery. Code 12 just start of sequence, so meaningless really.

Looks like I'm going to have to strip off plenum and have a good check around, but thought I'd just ask the question here in case anyone may have any ideas that would cause engine not to start?

Omega General Help / Oil in plug wells - leaking cam cover gaskets
« on: 30 January 2013, 19:14:20 »
Don't be fooled by service history claiming cam cover gaskets have been replaced.

My faithful ebay £300 Omega Estate workhorse has just failed its MOT test, and I've rectified the worn track rod end and number plate lamp problem. The wire had broken off the spade terminal inside the back of the tailgate, and after removing inside tailgate cover found cause of the problem.

I knew the cam cover gaskets were about to expire due to the smoke coming from under the bonnet (oil dripping onto exhaust manifold shields), but the MOT test station actually stated that the car was in a dangerous condition to drive due to this problem! The job was on my 'to do list' but during a standard cleaning of the breather system I came across this......

Shock horror - never knew it was this bad, and found the gaskets had been fitted with white kitchen silicone sealant. Just goes to show you should never take any previous repair documentation as genuine, and I'm surprised the engine was still firing okay on all 6 cylinders.

Nearside bank not as bad, but still in need of attention.

General Car Chat / Vectra B water leaking into boot
« on: 22 November 2012, 11:42:57 »
Hi All,

Mrs Tick Tock's 2.5 SRI Vectra (1999) is suffering with condensation on the inside of the windows (more noticable now with the changing weather and lots of rain). The carpet in the boot is damp, and more so when we've had heavy rain, but can't see where it's getting in.

Are there any common water ingress points on the back of these cars. Thought it might be leaking past the spoiler on the tailgate lid, but that seems fairly well seated, window and tailgate seals look good.....  any ideas or known common problems?

Hope this can be moved to 'wanted' section please.

I'm after a spare standard issue screw jack (possibly one hanging around from a dismantled car?) as recent acquisition doesn't appear to have one (2.5 V6 estate). Anyone who can help please get in touch and let me know cost including postage.

Omega General Help / 2.5 V6 HBV alternative? (with pics).
« on: 08 September 2012, 12:34:57 »
Probably spend too much time browsing the forum than actually working on the car!  :)  Anyway, just in the process of putting the engine back together (it is a long process as I'm only doing it for enjoyment when I'm in the mood, and on nice days like today outside). I was pondering on the HBV and its awkward position, and thought perhaps it could be moved for ease of access in the future.

This pic shows the HBV at the back of the engine. Luckily I have my other Miggy to refer to (good old workhorse esate and still going strong despite a few knocks and bruises), and strangely enough I found this -

- A relocated HBV of a different type. The 'formed' pipes go to the heater matrix and the coolant transfer pipe tee respectively, as you would expect. I've never seen mention of this alternative version within the pages of this forum, so thought I'd post and see if anyone knows about it or has seen it before? Control looks to be electricaly operated solenoid (no vacuum pipes) with the cable looking to be going off to the battery / relay area via the front of rad (and neatly incorporated into existing flexible conduits).

Omega General Help / Vx trade prices for putting car back together
« on: 25 August 2012, 14:42:24 »
Hi All, Hope this is in the right section.

Just been to the local Vx dealers for prices on parts with trade card (Autobahnstormers). Was a bit shocked to see the following, just for putting top of engine back together. I put a list of numbers and descriptions together, also questioning whether any other bits might be needed for putting heads back on car - HG set, manifold gaskets, o rings, sealant, etc for 2.5 V6 petrol year 2000 F/L

At these sort of prices it would be cheaper to buy replacement Omegas and run them into the ground.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated. I'd like to fit original parts, and should be looking elsewhere, or at a different list of numbers?

Cheers

Omega General Help / Valve spring compressor
« on: 16 June 2011, 10:55:46 »
Hi All, I'm looking to buy a valve spring compressor to assist with the overhaul of my 2.5 V6 heads. Just had a look on ebay, and there's many different types.

Can anyone recommend a particular make that's suitable, and has the right adaptors included?

Also, whilst the valves are out, would be as well to replace the stem seals - genuine Vx parts, or aftermarket?

54
Apart from the obvious Vx black gasket sealer, is there another make / type suitable for this purpose, or does anyone recommend a particular brand?

Cheers,

Tick Tock

Omega General Help / Heater valve? Identification with picture
« on: 25 March 2011, 10:28:33 »
Hi All, having removed cylinder heads from block, just wondered what these two valves are - A & B.

Is it advisable to remove item A from block whilst access is good, strip and clean? Or leave well alone?

Also should I take the opportunity to flush out certain components on the cooling / heating apparatus whilst I've got the opportunity?

Any comments most welcome.

Newbie Welcome Area / Hi from Herefordshire
« on: 17 March 2011, 02:05:04 »
Hi..... Just joined, so thought I'd introduce myself. I've had my second Omega for 10 years now, and the poor thing needs some TLC to get it back on the road. I've enjoyed reading the posts on this forum, and am hoping to get under the bonnet now the weather's getting better.... and maybe asking a few questions along the way  :)

Omega Gallery / Nothing Irmscher in here, I'm afraid!
« on: 16 April 2011, 13:36:30 »
Still proud of them though. Excellent workhorses with cavernous interiors to fit all manner of shapes and sizes in. Comfy to drive and no worries about the MPG if only driven a couple of times a week.  :y

They are both 2.5 V6 mini-facelift manual estates with only 6 months age difference, the CD on the left is a recent acquisition, and the CDX on the right is undergoing engine repairs at the moment. Further details of this sloooooow project can be found here.  ftp://http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1300567507/0

Twins!! I've had this one about 3 weeks now, and am more than happy with it. I did have to spend 6 hours cleaning the inside, and getting rid of the traces of dogs and children, but it's very tidy inside now. There's the odd dink and scratch as you would expect, and the obligatory rust patch on the tailgate (under the number plate light).

It will be a handy reference when putting the CDX back together, just in case I get stuck. Paid £399 (if you include the pound coin I found under the back seat! MOT until next year, 109K miles on the clock, and a load of receipts showing recent work done - all the usual stuff like cam cover gaskets, cam belt, HBV, coolant & oil change included, new exhaust and rear tyres. Hasn't used or lost a drop of fluid in the last 500 miles, so well chuffed at a bargain price.

CD with the CDR 2005 unit, and broken glove box catch. I've got the bit to go back on, but looks like the glove box front needs to be dismantled. Anyone know of a guide within the forum for this? If not, I'll phot and jot it as I go, and post in due course. Thought I'd post a couple of comparison pics, showing the difference between the CD and CDX whilst the camera was out......

..... and the CDX with the CCR 2006 unit.

Besides the glove box button, I need to get a roller for the door stay, and fit that..... it sounds like gunshot when it's connected!

And a clean back needed on the one wheel arch, before that surface rust turns into something worse.

Hi all,

My other car 1998 Vectra SRI 2.5 V6 (well actually the missus' car) has had a problem with acceleration for quite a while now, and even though you can get good performance, it doesn't like a heavy right foot.

Driving with little pedal depression is fine, put your foot down and it falters (almost like missfire or fuel starvation), but will 'g' you back in the seat with just the right touch.

Any ideas anyone?

General Car Chat / Head gasket - work in progress v6 2.5
« on: 19 March 2011, 20:45:06 »
A couple of weeks ago I noticed the exhaust was throwing out a lot of vapour when the engine had warmed up, and after a 10 minute stop I tried to start the engine, but it was hydraulically siezed..... a cylinder full of water methinks!! 120k on the clock, and only changed the cam belt last year!

After a couple of attempts, engine started okay, and was still running as sweet as a nut, although a couple of miles later the 'low coolant level' warning came on. Good job it was just a local journey, so managed to get home and the poor thing hasn't left the driveway since.

In my former years, I carried out full engine overhauls on 'straight 6' BMC 2912cc engines (technology from 40 years ago). I couldn't stomach a garage repair bill of £***** and the car isn't worth it, so have decided to set myself a spring/summer top-end project. I've got quite attached to the old girl, so no rush, no hassle, just take it a step at a time. Here's how far I've got in 2 days.

I've never come across so many pipes, cables, hoses and connectors before, but have to admit I'm still feeling enthusiastic about the project. I've taken plenty of pics, drawn lots of diagrams, and labelled plenty of bits.... most of which I can identify so far  :)

Still not even half way there yet, but next job will be removing the camshafts. Any pointers or advice welcome (or even words of encouragment). A big thank you for the PDF doc by iggy21uk on OOF, outlining the main process of taking the V6 lump apart.... and plenty of pics to help me along the way.

I've since found that the timing cover and backplate come off much easier when the front belt tensioner is removed first!
