Omega General Help / Cruise & dodgy idle speed
« on: 27 December 2006, 20:30:54 »
OK my idle speed is still erratic but it now has a twist.  If I slow down in gear to less than 1000 rpm as soon as I slip it into neutral ( it's a manual) the revs bounce back up to 1100/1200 rpm and won't drop until the speedo hits 0. When speedo hits 0 it drops to 7/800 rpm but if I slip it into neutral with the wheels turning it won't drop below 1200 rpm.  It operates smoothly in every gear and does not seem to stick at all.

I've cleaned the breathers, replaced the throttle body gasket after cleaning it and lubing with 3in1 oil.  I've even renewed the little semi clear pipe just in case but it's no different.  I borrowed a working MAF from a 2.2 recently and it made no difference. All the hoses are in good order and I cannot find any splits or leaks. Emissions light is still on.

Q. As the throttle seems to be linked to the speedo could it be some kind of feedback from my cruise upgrade?

Omega General Help / Pitch 'n' roll
« on: 27 December 2006, 23:24:41 »
My old barge is noticibly softer to drive than the wife's 05 Meriva but lately it seems to bounce around more than usual - or the roads are getting worse!

I've just noticed on the last service (in June :-[) that both O/S/F and N/S/F wishbone rear bushes are split - could this be a factor?  Would it account for the unusual and occassional pull to the left? & could I change them myself? That means it must be easy!  ;D

Omega General Help / Why does my car feel unstable?
« on: 17 December 2006, 20:38:06 »
Just driving round town 30 mph and car pulls to left harshly as if the road has dropped away - then its back to normal.  Wheel drops down a small pot hole and away we go again.  Motorway driving AOK and no loss of feel in the corners.  The best wat to describe it it that the front wheels feel loose sometimes?
What would or could cause this? (FYI tyres new this year, pressures at 30 PSI all round)  :-?

Omega General Help / Could it be a dodgy MAF afterall?
« on: 10 December 2006, 12:23:37 »
The saga continues...

Breather system cleaned out, inc little semi clear tube and tiny hole in throttle body.  Emissions light still on.

But idle speed still not dropping quickly enough as if butterfly is sticking.  So today I recleaned the little hole and tube, it slid off to easily for my liking so I chopped off 5mm to get a tighter fit.  I've tightened the torx bolts on the throttle housing and given the butterfly a squirt with WD40 for good measure.  I took off the air intake and gave it short bursts with carb cleaner and put it all back together again.

Throttle much more responsive as settling back to 700 rpm (engine cold) but then I noticed I'd not connected up the MAF switch - plugged it back in and throttle now back to very slow operation again. Emissions light still on.  Tech2 reported MAF fault previously.  I've also checked all the hoses and bellows for splits and can't find anything.

So could it be the MAF afterall?  I'm off to give it a run now so take your time. Cheers

Omega General Help / Squeak Squeak
« on: 26 November 2006, 10:20:23 »
It's all I hear now from my steering wheel at low speed.  Sounds like a rubber bush but what do I know.   :-X

It started last year and Vx changed the steering column under warranty 1m before it expired.  I ran it for a few weeks and it was worse so I asked them to fix it again as they hadn't fixed the original problem.  Got a call advising that they would, but I had to pay 10% - seemed reasonable until they told me this was £50  >:(.  Anyway long story short - they fitted a second column for free and it's been fine until yesterday when the mouse it back.

Any ideas?

Omega General Help / Idle lube
« on: 25 November 2006, 23:27:18 »
Ok, I've cleaned the breathers and throttle body some time ago and the idle speed has dropped from 1500 rpm to 700 rpm.

But it only does this when standing for a few seconds at standstill and often won't drop below 1000 rpm.
If I slip it into neutral whilst driving it stays nearer the 1000 mark.  I popped off the hose and lubed the butterfly with some 3 in 1 but it still doesn't seem smooth to me.

More carb cleaner, more 3 in 1, something else, or just leave it and hope it sorts itself?

Omega General Help / Hissing - should I worry?
« on: 11 November 2006, 23:01:55 »
Previous questions and answers regarding my emissions light, lambda and maf sensor faults have all pointed to an air leak.

I've followed AA's comprehensive instructions and cleaned the breather system tonight.  The car feels  more responsive and I can now clearly hear a hissing sound and a continuous metallic clicking - which I'd hadn't heard before.

Is this:

:)A - Good news? as I can now get a real mechanic to locate the problem and fix it  .... or

:(B - Bad news? as I've bollocked something up in re-assemby?

Omega General Help / Just about to clean breathers - gasket Q
« on: 11 November 2006, 18:51:12 »
Just about to clean the breathers using AA's how to guide.

I went to Vx this morning and asked for the 2 relevant gaskets.  The muppet in Parts was from Mars and didn't understand.

Techie was called for and he told the Martian I only need one the throttle body, which I'd already told him, but I couldn't remember the name of the other one.

I now know its the sump gasket, but can I leave this in situ, clean it and put back or must it be replaced?

Omega General Help / What have I done?
« on: 31 October 2006, 22:32:37 »
Took rubber air intake hoses off on Sunday just to check all ok & refit & tighten all connections in the wild hope of clearing the emissions light on my dash.

Cleaned around butterfly valve  with nothing more sinsiter than a dry cloth & now seems to stick at around 1500 rpm for ages before dropping to usual idle after 10-20 seconds.

No need for cruise as it drives itself now at 25mph!

Omega General Help / Dirty Windscreen
« on: 27 October 2006, 20:20:34 »
Just refilled my washer bottle with top quality Halfords screen wash & now it's struggling to squirt all the way as if it's only running on 25% power.

All 4 jets are clean and initial quick squirt is ok & no obvious leaks found.

I've drained the system & refilled but still not enough pressure.

Any ideas?

Omega General Help / Brighter Lights
« on: 28 October 2006, 21:26:45 »
Last year I swapped the standard bulbs for Osram Silverstar +50% more light with xenon gas it claimed - fairly inexpensive at £15.

Now the moon is out before I leave work they don't seem so bright.

Other than full Xenon refit can anyone suggest decent H1 bulbs that work?

Omega General Help / Finally got fault code from Tech2 - PO100
« on: 22 October 2006, 11:36:17 »
EML been on now for longer than I would like.  Code read 2m ago indicated Lambda sensor, mechanic suspected air leak but as running smooth now said to leave it cos it was unlikely the sensor was faulty and could be throwing away good money after bad.  Did change temperature sender though £30 cos main problem was rough running when cold.

Anyway long story short I've just had it re-read by Vauxhall as PO100 - Mass Air Mass Meter.  Should I change this with genuine GM parts or new unit on Ebay no 200039286270 suitable for my 2003 2.2CD Z22XE engine for £45?

Having read the problems of Taxi Driver I'm concerened this won't fix the fault.  Lambda sensor code no longer showing & no other codes recorded. Help!  ;)

Omega General Help / Cruise control - clutch swith.
« on: 22 October 2006, 11:42:14 »
Just swapped indicator stalk on my Omega with cruise buttons from a 2.2 Vectra.  As promised by you guys it was a doddle and completed in 5 mins.

Took it to friendly mechanic to have system enabled but wouldn't work - cheapskates at Vauxhall haven't fitted a clutch switch so thinks clutch pedal is depressed and knocks it off before it begins.

Easy to fix and I'll fit one next week but thought it might be helpful for any one else fitting cruise upgrade to know.
