Omega General Help / 2.2 petrol advice please.
« on: 25 November 2006, 14:14:49 »
Hi,
realistically how much better on fuel would a 2.2 petrol Estate with manual gearbox be than my 2.5 V6 auto. I would hope that it was between 5-10mpg better given all of the above factors ?

Can i use some of the Cam locking kit that i have for my V6 to change the belt/rollers on a 2.2 petrol.

How durable is the 2.2 engine in terms of what sort of mileages that they can take if maintained properly. Is 130k going to mean it is tired. My last Saab had 160k on and was still great.

Presumably the cam belt and roller change on one of these should be a lot easier than my V6 ( which in all fairness was not too bad )

Thanks Darryl

I only need the surround that incorporates the heater dials, not any of the switches , ashtray or heater knobs.

The item that i need is in the photo below.

Here's hopin.

Omega General Help / Hi,Centre Dash panel advice pleae.
« on: 24 November 2006, 13:50:21 »
Hi
my 1999 Omega estate is fitted with basic aircon and has the black centre dash with the twist type heater controls.

1. Will the wooden surround panel from an Omega that has the upgraded climate control knobs( see link below ) fit.

I want to retain all of my existing controls and switches and  just want to replace the black panel with a wooden one that has had all of its original switches etc removed.

2. How is the centre panel removed?

Thanks Darryl

Hi,
i replaced both covers on mine on Friday and whilst there is still a faint smell of burning oil i am hoping that it will fade in the next few days. Everything certainly looks dry, and several other members have mentioned that the smell can linger for a week or so.

I followed the How2 guides fully including the breathers and found them immensely helpful. What made the fitment of the passenger side bank "ONE HELL OF A LOT EASIER" was spending an extra five minutes removing the front  ? bracket for the air con pipe and then  prise open the plastic cable trough , ease the wiring loom out. Remove the plastic trough totally  and ease the loom upwards/bacwards and tie it out of the way.
I tied the plug leads back in the same manner and found that by doing this i could slide the cam cover in EASILY without dislodging the gasket. I tried three or four dry runs before ever applying the black sealant and knew that by doing this i had a lot more clearance.

I seem to remember seeing this tip mentioned on this or "THAT OTHER site some time ago so the idea certainly isnt mine but one that i would strongly recommend. I know that by the time you have stripped it down as far as this you dont want any extra work but that 5 minutes i mentioned will definitely save a lot of frustration.

Fingers crossed now and hope everything is okay and that the smell disappears totally. If they are still leaking i will be looking for bandages for my wrists as the thought of doing it again is not a pleasant one.

Cheers Darryl

Omega General Help / V6 Cam cover question
« on: 19 October 2006, 21:14:39 »
Hi,
i finally made a start on replacing these gaskets on my 99 2.5 V6 tonight. The plug wells were full to the top with oil. When i removed the covers i could find no trace of the small o rings that are supposed to sit under the fixing bolts. Is it possible that they have disintegrated or might the covers have been off before and these o rings not fitted. They are definitely not in the head casting and the covers  dont seem to have them stuck to it.

Why are  these cam covers such a design fault and how the hell does the car run with so much oil around the plugs? The designers should have been shot for this .

I have new gaskets, proper sealant and will fit new plugs at the same time as well as a replacement HBV. Breathers will be done

I just hope to god that they dont leak after this much effort.  :-/

Is there any advantage using the metal covers from the Vectra ?

Just hope it doesnt end in tears.

Omega General Help / Spark plug recommendation ?
« on: 20 October 2006, 08:13:23 »
Hi,
i am doing the cam covers on my 1999 2.5 V6 so now seems the obvious time to replace the Plugs.

Are the genuine Vx ones from a main dealer much more expensive than say champion or Bosch.

In the Haynes manual it quotes Champion R10DMC are these correct and is the gap fixed on these or do they need adjusting? If so what is the correct gap please?

Thanks again.     Darryl

Omega General Help / V6  HBV & Cam Cover gasket advice please ?
« on: 27 August 2006, 07:38:20 »
Hi,
i am going to replace the HBV on my 99 2.5 V6 shortly. I could also do with replacing the cam cover gaskets and am wondering if i can save a bit of work..

Seeing as i will need to remove the plenum to do the gaskets , will i then have sufficient room to access the HBV without having to remove the wipers and false scuttle. I know that it is best to remove the scuttle when replacing the HBV with the plenum in place but mine will be off.

2. I seem to remember that one colour cam cover gasket set was better quality than another. Is it the black ones which are okay and the grey ones are to be avoided or the other way round?

3. I will be using the proper black sealant ( got the part number ) . Am i right in sayoing that  this only goes on the 90 degree angles of the gasket channel and not around the entire circumference.

Thanks Darryl

Omega General Help / Heater by pass valve for 2.5V6
« on: 19 August 2006, 22:47:08 »
My Omega 2.5 V6 is loosing water very slowly and i can see that there is a bit of a weep by the Heater by pass valve.

How much are these normally and where is the best/cheapest place to get one?

I realise that changing it is likely to be entertaining. :'(

Thanks Darryl

Omega Gallery / My 1999  2.5 CD Estate
« on: 28 August 2006, 08:42:46 »
Just a few photos of my 1999 Omega 2.5 CD auto . Only 2 previous owners and a genuine 106K on the clock.

I picked it up last March for very sensible money and apart from replacing the exhaust and the Cambelt + Rollers it has been easy on the pocket and a really comfy drive. :D

General Discussion Area / 2.2 DTi general advice please.
« on: 07 October 2007, 11:31:10 »
Well its been almost a year since i sold my 2.5V6 Estate and left the forum.

I have been running a little 1.6 Scenic in its place and it has been great but now i have bought a caravan and need a nice big heavy car again.

I am thinking of a facelift Manual 2.2 DTi Estate as i want carrying capacity as well as reasonable economy.

Questions.

Does this engine have a chain driven cam or is there a traditional cambelt ?( hope its a chain )

Generally what are they like once the mileage is well over 100k in terms of reliability?

What tends to go wrong with these engines (if anything )

How economical are they and will it have enough grunt to handle a normal size 2 berth caravan comfortably?

Has anyone chipped one of these 2.2's and if so how much better was it?

Anything else i need to watch out for?

My Last Omega a 99T reg auto Estate was a great car and i had it well sorted. I know that it would eat the caravan but i DEFINITELY want a Diesel.

Many thanks Darryl :)

Well,
it looks like i have sold my Estate today, took a healthy deposit and the couple are due to collect it in the next day or so.

I have bought a people carrier and as a result won't be back on this forum ( unless i buy another luxo barge )

I would just like to say a heartfelt HUGE thankyou to everyone that has been so helpful and kind whenever i have needed advice. I have been a member of many car forums but without doubt this is the best.

A unique blend of a well organised web site, good moderators and superb members.

Have a great New Year and take care of yourselves

General Discussion Area / Legal questions answered on line ?
« on: 25 November 2006, 17:41:44 »

This link may be useful for everyone. Its something that i have been involved with at work and is a mine of PROPER legal advice available to all of the public.

It may well be useful to place it in a FAQ on this site  if considered prudent. It is very intuitive. Just search under a letter for your query for example  and see what you come up with.

Cheers Darryl
