Omega General Help / Diff Whine
« on: 28 May 2014, 17:13:44 »
I have a whine that must be coming from the diff. Its not a loud noise but it is annoying. The sound began suddenly from nothing a couple of weeks ago it starts at about 30/35 mph, below that speed there is nothing.

Tyres, brakes and wheel bearings all OK.

Question: Is this something that might be eliminated with a simple diff oil change or am I going to have to source a replacement diff?

Omega General Help / Rear screen lower rubber trim
« on: 30 April 2014, 18:42:37 »
Is this piece of trim supposed to be stuck on? If so, with what?

The one on my car is very loose and comes away very easily. Pressing it into the groove in the rubber window seal doesn't really hold it.

Omega General Help / Transfer Elite seats to a CDX?
« on: 27 April 2014, 17:52:16 »
My 14 year old Elite has effectively come to the end of its life (economically speaking). It has served me for 10 years but needs too much work, much more than replacement would cost.

Quite local to me someone is selling a CDX that looks in good shape.

I would like to keep my leather seats if possible. Can I swop my leather interior from the Elite? Is the wiring all there for the heating and adjustment?

Anything else I should consider transferring before I scrap the Elite?

Omega General Help / Brake Line Repair Questions
« on: 16 April 2014, 19:53:43 »
I have to replace/repair corroded brake lines to get through my next MOT. I haven't been underneath to have a look yet so I don't know the full extent but last years MOT advisory was warning of "slight corrosion" to :

Nearside Front to Rear
Off side Front to Rear
Near Side Rear
Offside Rear
Offside Front

It sounds like the lot need replacing/repairing. My local independent garage has quoted just under £300 to do the job but it looks like something I might be able to do myself.

What diameter are the pipes? All the ones on fleabay seem to be 3/16 copper at roughly £12 for 25 feet. Is that the right type?

Are the connectors Metric or AF or do I have to choose? Are they a particular type of connector?

Apart from pipe and connectors it seems I will need:

On-Car flaring Tool
Pipe cutter
Pipe bender?
Flare Nut Spanner
Brake Fluid

Anything else I've forgotten/need to know about.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Omega General Help / Permanent Threadlock

Just how literal is the word "permanent"?

Can something fixed with permanent studlock be subsequently undone?

General Car Chat / Nissan Micra Steering/Stability problem
« on: 21 October 2013, 20:37:33 »
I recently bought an old, apparently low mileage Micra to get her to work and back and keep me in the style to which I have become accustomed.

It pretty good for its age except that the steering goes very light at motorway speeds (70mph) but is fine town speeds.

On inspection the steering and front suspension look OK, there is no play on rocking the wheels.

Does anyone have any idea what might cause this effect?

Thanks in advance.

Omega General Help / Oil Filter Conversion
« on: 22 May 2013, 19:40:43 »
I have read the maintenance guide about converting my oil filter. I haven't been able to change my filter for some time.

My cannister will have to be cut off because even my local garage can't unscrew the lid.

My only concern is that once I have cut through the case I may not be able to get the inner nut off. (I nearly always have problems getting the old stuff off) Then I will be in some trouble.

Has anyone got experience of doing this conversion? Does this inner nut come off readily?

Thanks in advance.

Omega General Help / Rapid Coolant loss
« on: 22 May 2013, 16:16:12 »
Suffered catastrophic, rapid coolant loss today. Luckily it all happened within a mile of home. Low Coolant light, followed by rapidly increased temp to max, engine management light and blinking oil light. Arrived back in a cloud of steam. I know I should have stopped immediately but it was only a mile or so to home and I live in the middle of nowhere.

Left it to cool and found all the coolant had gone. When I put water in, it fell out from the back of the engine compartment centre-ish almost as fast as I topped up (So much water I couldn't see where exactly, running from every low point). I've arranged for a local garage to lift it in (automatic) tomorrow.

Any ideas what I might be looking at? The car is old and a big bill could finally write it off, which would be a shame.

Omega General Help / Outside Temperature Sensor Faulty
« on: 03 April 2013, 20:06:32 »
Hi all,

My outside temp display is just showing "F   C" I know that is really is F***** Cold out there but I suspect my temp sensor is faulty or is perhaps in need of a clean.

Can anyone tell me where it lives on the car. Any pictures? or description.

One other question - Would a faulty outside temp sensor also affect the cabin temperature/ACon. It might just be a coincidence but since the temp sensor went awol my aircon is only pumping out cold air, unless I set the inside temp to 26 degrees or above?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Omega General Help / V6 Exhaust
« on: 20 November 2012, 12:07:59 »
I know there's already a post about this somewhere but I can't find it.

My GM exhaust has finally given up the ghost after six and a half years and 50,000 miles (£355 seemed a lot for an exhaust at the time). My local exhaust centre say they cannot supply one but they'll fit one I source for £80 labour.

I understand that GM don't make these excellent original systems anymore so I need to source a replacement ( both centre pipes and back box). I've seen some cheap ones on Fleabay, (probably made of blancmange). I remember reading on here somewhere that there is a German firm that supplies good quality exhaust systems. Does anyone have the details?

Any advice on how best to proceed would be welcome. The car is 12yo now, the rear doors are rusting at the bottom, somehow I don't think I need another 6 year exhaust.

Omega General Help / Poor starting from cold
« on: 21 March 2012, 20:52:16 »
For a while now my car has been reluctant to start from cold. It does start, but it chugs about and stutters a bit for a few seconds before jumping into life. I've had the car for seven years and it has always started instantly in the past (except when the crank sensor failed). Once started, the engine runs smoothly with no misfiring and it re-starts from warm as it should.

Could this be an indicator that my crank sensor is on the way out again? Any other suggestions.

The last big maintenance I did was to replace the dis-pack with a second-hand unit.

Omega General Help / Kickdown not working
« on: 22 September 2011, 20:38:10 »
Since I replaced my Dis Pack I have had no kickdown.

I assume this is because I have not properly reconnected the throttle cables on reassembly but I can't see what I have done wrong, it all looks OK.

Anyone got any idea about what I am likely to have done wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Omega General Help / Misfire Diagnosis
« on: 18 July 2011, 19:30:16 »
I need some help in the best procedure to further diagnose my misfiring V6.

I don't know if its the plugs, leads or Dis/Coil pack.

I have not been able to remove the coil pack but a limited torchlight inspection did not reveal any splitting like that shown in the maintenance guide photos.

I can't afford to just go replacing parts at random until I stumble upon the solution (I've already replaced the crank sensor, the breathers have been cleaned and a split breather pipe resolved).

Fault codes (19 & 21)have not cleared despite 20+ starts.

Can anyone give me some guidance as to the best way to proceed.?

Omega General Help / OBD2/EOBD Code readers?
« on: 17 July 2011, 19:11:53 »
Does anyone know whether a 2000Wreg 2.5 V6 car is OBD2 compliant? I'm thinking of buyng a code reader.
