Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Xenon headlight problem?
« on: 16 November 2006, 21:40:04 »
After finally picking the car up on Tuesday I noticed something that didn't seem right.

After starting the car up the multi function unit displays 'Headlight field/vision'

Is this related to the self levelling system for the headlights?? Coz my Dad thought it was because a front sidelight bulb had blown!!!

Now I know the systems going to be different to my old Espace, but the Xenons on that used to drop to the lowest setting when you'd turn the lights off, then when you turn them back on you would hear the motors operating and see the lights raise up to the correct level.

On the Tractor i've not seen them move or heard the motors adjusting them,is this related to the above display??

And if so,is there anyway of doing the 'paperclip test' to determine which sensor is faulty??
Failing that, can the sensors be tested with a multimeter for resistance??

Thanx in advance..

Omega General Help / Got a couple of jobs done today...
« on: 03 December 2006, 21:29:53 »
Well,I finally got outta bed this morning with the enthusiasm to sort out a couple of jobs i'd been putting off on The Tractor  ;D

Started around 10am...set about replacing both the bottom arms in a desperate attempt to stop it eating the N/S/F mudflap on left hand bends!!

To be fair the job was a doddle..only ball ache bit was having to split the hub from the leg to re-locate the bottom balljoints the bushes on the old ones were so worn that I levered them down and there was enough give in them to come out.
Could I hell as like get the new arms down far enough to get them back in  >:(

This was about the time that I noticed that EVERYTHING geometry wise is adjustable on elongated holes...
So I put everything back as close as I could (nuts and bolts back in outline where they were) and all seems ok,drives ok but its STILL eating the mudflap on cormers  ::)
Now looking at it side on I reckon theres a bit more setback on the N/S wheel than there is on the O/S and as this is adjustable on the rear bottom arm bolt I reckon this may be the problem..SO...

1st question is...
I remember reading about someone having their car set up by someone who uses the boards,I want to get the geometry checked and set up by someone who knows the cars, rather than some spotty 17 yr old down Kwik Fit trying to tell me it can't be done. (annoying thing is that if I were still in the trade i'd do it myself and i'd know it was right)

SO WHO IS IT???? Anyone remember?? and if so have they any contact details please as I want to get it done before it eats my tyres and mudflaps!!!

And the other job that I thought I'd have a go at was checking the Intercooler fan....yep,you've guess it,the 20A fuse under the bonnet was blown so out it came...

After removing the half a dead bird and a trees worth of leaves from the intercooler we got to the fan,I parted it from the 'cooler to find it seized quite badly  :'(

So after making a loom to conect it directly to the battery we got started....after much persuation with a can of Wurth electrical contact cleaner and WD40 it freed off.
I left it running for a bit, working it forwards and backwards when disaster struck.....

I picked it up as it was running to spray a bit more WD40 in when I slipped and the now nice and free fan decided it was hungry....so it promptly took a bite and the top off my thumb  :o :o :'( :'(

It looked like a scene from 'Hostel'  ;D blood everywhere!! but at least my fan works now!! Godamn thing's still throbbing, feels like I hit it with a hammer  :o

So anyway,a plaster and new latex glove later I refitted the 'cooler/fan assembly and replaced the fuse.

2nd question is...
When does the fan switch on coz i've been out in it this afternoon and haven't heard it once, was thinking about putting it on a manual switch but couldn't be arsed what with bits of my thumb all over the garage floor ;D

Thanx in advance..its been one of those days!!!

Just the headlights to sort now... ;)

Cheers

Omega General Help / Non genuine wishbones??
« on: 16 November 2006, 21:30:33 »
Has anyone had experience with non genuine front wishbones as I dropped in Vauxhall today to be told 'we don't stock the lower arms, but we can order them in,that'll be £188+vat '  :o :o

Holy crap,I nearly passed out and when I came round I asked him if that was for the pair, 'oh no,thats each sir'  :o

So going on the fact of not wanting to part with over £400 I'm looking at cheaper options.
I had a look on the 'Vaux-All' website and they list them for £36+vat each...which is a bit more acceptable!!

I know that they're not OE parts so I was wondering if anyone has used them and if so whats the durability like compared to the OE parts???

And finally, would it be adviseable to have the geometry checked once they've been replaced and if so any recommendations where to take it??

Cheers

Omega General Help / Omega 'Tractor' hot start problem
« on: 11 November 2006, 11:44:29 »
Hi all, after driving the 'Tractor' once it would seem to have all the symptoms of the hot start problem that i've read about on the net.

Starts fine from cold with glowplug light on dash, then when warm/operating temp the glowplug light doesn't come on (is this normal when hot?) and takes a fair bit of cranking and a bit of throttle to get it going. My Dad thought this was normal  ;D

Someone posted the same question on the VON boards and was met with the reply 'search the boards'.
Now thats ok,but at present for some reason I can't access the boards fully and wondered if anyone else had come across this???

I've seen something about a fuel temp sensor on the diesel pump that causes the problem but when I asked Vauxhall about this they didn't know anything about it  ::)

So does anyone know where said sensor is mounted, what sort of a job it is to change and what sort of price i'm looking at???

I'm a techy by trade so doing the job isn't a problem, just that I have no technical info on the car whatsoever  :-[

All answers on a postcard!!!

Omega General Help / Auxillery water pump.
« on: 01 November 2006, 23:29:54 »
As i've just crossed over to Vauxhall I could do with a bit of advise!!!!

Two questions....

I have a 1999 T reg 2.5 TD (BMW Engine)Elite and after poking around under the bonnet I discovered an electric auxilery water pump mounted on the O/S inner wing (near the header tank)

Can anyone tell me what the correct operation is for these ie when they turn on,how long they stay on for and also what controls them (switches them on/off)?????

The reason I ask is because the same type of pump is fitted to both my Renault 21 Turbos. On those it is used to keep coolant flowing round the turbo after the engine is switched off and to prevent the turbo bearings overheating.
It is controlled by a time delay relay that switches off after approx 12 minutes.

I was wondering if this was a similar setup on the Omega's....coz if so mine doesn't work  :'(

And finally.....I would have bought a Haynes manual, but apparently it doesn't cover the Turbo Diesel,so was wondering if anyone has used the 'service discs' that are available on Fleabay??
I don't like to own a car that i've got no information for as I'm a qualified Techy and will be doing all the maintainence myself.

Thanx in advance

Newbie Welcome Area / Hi all!!!
« on: 01 November 2006, 23:00:07 »
Hi everyone, just like to introduce myself....My name's Roger (hence name rogerreno!!) and this is my 1st go at ownership of a Vauxhall...in fact my 1st go at anything non-French!!!

Had a VERY bad experience with a 51 plate Renault Espace 2.2Dci and after emptying my wallet quicker than the Mrs does it had to go  :(
Shame really coz both me and the Mrs loved the car to bits,as did the kids (got 3 kids so plenty of room with no fighting over seats!!) but in the end it just let us down one too many times  >:(

SO....after a short conversation with my dad he kindly offered me his Champagne Silver '99 T reg Omega 2.5TD Elite auto for a resonable price as it was surplus to requirements.
Its done 142k with FVSH and he's owned it from 3 years old,so its well established in the family!!

I will hopefully be taking delivery in the next week or 2 (coz he's waiting for his new company car) and to be honest i'm really looking forward to getting it, although Sarah (my better half) is still a bit unsure coz she's never really driven an auto.

Its a fairly relaxed move compared to what else is in the garage....
Our toys (that we show) comprise of my Factory standard looking Silver 1987 Ph1 Renault 5 GT Turbo with a homebuilt 200bhp engine under the bonnet.
My 1988 Black Standard looking Renault 21 Turbo (currently in process of building race spec engine with power circa 350bhp  ;) )
And last but not least,Sarahs 1991 Renault 21 Turbo with full Evo kit and subtle flip paintjob,17's and a homebuilt and developed 250bhp motor.

Daily runaround is a 2000 X plate Saxo VTR....Told you I was into French cars!!!! ;D

I spent a good deal of time going through the various boards on here last night and was genuinly taken back at the friendly helpfull nature of people on here....specially the 22 page thread about head replacement on the V6!!! It was more gripping than Corrie!!

Roll on Omega ownership....I've told him the overall price will be reflected in the excess miles he does in it before he hands it over, seem to remember his reply ended in **** OFF!!!!

Said to him I can see a Facelift 3.2 V6 Elite on the horizon......... 8-)

But for now i'll take what i'm offered!!!

Cheers all
