Omega General Help / Upgrading Omega 2.0 16V - Engine, suspension, brake queries

Hi All,
As some of you may have read, good old "Frank" http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=45651.0 did us proud again and as such we have decided that he deserves to retire from charity rallies (as do we I think lol) and be treated to a fairly serious makeover. The intention being to turn him into a bit of a trackday beast for the four of us to enjoy and hopefully continue to provide an interesting read. I'm hoping you knowledgable folks may be able to help us out a bit with some queries. remember, this is all to be done on a budget so upgrades using parts from better models is the key rather than Brembo 10 pots etc

Engine :

Just to be a bit different and again keep costs down, we are interesting in going Saab 2.3T for the engine, I know it's been done with Cavaliers and Astras but I don't recall seeing an Omega get this treatment. Does anyone know if it will bolt up to the Box/work with the Omega Hydraulic clutch arrangement? Failing that, I assume the 3.2 V6 would go in from the later models? Would our manual box handle this hike in power?

Brakes :

I assume Omega MV6 brakes are the best ones to go for? Does anyone know if anything bigger fits from the Vaux range e.g. Vectra VXR kit?

Susupension :

Again, I guess MV6 kit is the best available on a budget. If not, are their any recommended budget kits? I understand that Astra Rear springs can be used to lower the rear ride height.

Sorry for all of the queries, I know it would be easier to go and buy an MV6 but we are all a bit attached to old Frank and want to turn him into something a bit special. The stripping of weight will of course be the first job!

Omega General Help / Omega clutch adjustment

Hi All,
I'm gradually working through the list of ailments on our ramshackle rally Omega but have one issue i'm not sure on. The clutch. It's not slipping but seems to have a very high biting point, obviously if possible i'd like to get away with not changing the clutch this year but if I have to I will. Is there any adjustment on these at all or is it all hydraulic? (The car is a few miles away and I don't have a Haynes manual yet)

Omega General Help / Would 5 stud Vectra B wheels fit an Omega

Now, I know the offset will not be right but we're trying to scrape the ramshackle omega through the MOT and make it driveable to where we intend to decorate it... thus giving us more time to find a cheap set of proper Omega wheels with tyres for the actual rally. I know the stud pattern is ok but have heard conflicting reports as to the centre bore?

Anyone know for sure?

Hi Chaps,

thought I would sign up as I am using an Omega for a charity rally this summer! Basically it's called the Ramshackle rally. You have to drive through France, Italy and Spain (and back for us) which is a 3000 mile trip. The tricky bit is that you have to do it in a car that costs less than £150! We have in the past used Cavaliers and Mondeos but this year managed to get an Omega. We always decorate the car imaginativeley and this year the theme is Thomas the Tank engine! Here's the car as it stands...

looks ok in the pic but it's rough body wise. Failed it's MOT today but nothing major. I'll put all the pics in the right section and hopefully will pick up some of the parts I need from the for sale section!

Ok, so we're after a few bits and pieces for "Frank"

As it's a charity car (We are raising for Keech cottage the childerns hospice again) and being done on a shoestring i'm generally looking for bits as cheap as possible or if you are feeling generous, donations would be gratefully recieved. I travel a fair way for work so may well be able to collect!

Drivers side front rub strip with side repeater - condition unimportant - ours erm.. fell off.

Drivers seat - colour and condition unimportant (reason we're after one is the bolster adjustment in ours is broken in quite an uncomfy position!)

Bootlid - Condition/colour unimportant (we drilled a load of holes in last years one to put the coal scuttle on, worst case we'll just chemical metal the holes)

Wheels/tyres - style/contition etc not important but we have two very borderline tyres so anything with legal tyres at less than the cost of new tyres considered!

Drivers doorcard - again, any colour/condition, the door handle on ours is broken.

Hoses etc - anything for the 2.0 16v would be really helpful as spares.

If you have any spares you think would be useful, let me know

Omega Gallery / Frank the Ramshackle Omega

Right then folks, thanks for the welcome in my other thread. As promised here's the full thread of our entry into this years Ramshackle rally.

The rough idea is that you buy a car for less than £150 and drive it the 1500 miles to Valencia via France, Italy and Spain. We always drive back too so a 3000 mile trip. Usually we sell the car on our return (infact the first car was used for more charity rallies by it's next owner) This year however we have storage so intend to use this car every year now just with a new theme.

First i'll give you some history on the last two years cars.

But i've never put up my other cars. (I know they aren't Omegas but hopefully we're all general car nuts so hope it's ok to put these up)

Pug 205 1.9GTI - was off the road for 8 years. I've had it 18 months and i'm hoping to have it on the road before PPC in the park in May

Spec wise, it's fairly standard apart from Bilstein dampers, PI front springs and a fresh rear beam but everything has been replaced so should be quite tight.

As I said, I know they aren't Omegas but hopefully of some interest
