Omega General Help / Re: Jelly rear end

The ride is totally level still, although I guess a spring break wouldn't showup as a lean?

My 2000 elite both rear springs had lost at least an inch from the bottom , self levelling suspension just lifted a bit so I never noticed the missing bits until I made a trip to WIM ......

cheap as chips I think I paid about £25 for mine last year from the dealer. Takes 5 seconds to fit too, old one pops out , new one pops in.

Make sure you order the right colour, they come in brown or black to match the dash colour

Omega General Help / Re: Tyre Advice Please
« on: 15 July 2010, 20:47:16 »
I love falken tyres - on my Golf and TVR but dont put them on an omega. I tried 452s, then 912s both gave me terrible tramlining and random handling - the car would just wander around and I had to keep correcting the steering.

Had it in to WIM several times for adjustment, new rear shocks, new wishbones, steering idler, steering box adjusted.

Then I changed to conti sc3's on the back and dunlops on the front and problem has been solved. Quieter and much more sure footed , especially in the wet.

I went for dunlops on the front as they were about £25 each cheaper than the contis. I think it was £97 each inc vat and shipping.

Falkens are great tyres but IME suit lighter cars as they have relatively soft sidewalls. For something as heavy as an omega you want stiffer sidewalls.

I renewed mine a mont ago, £300 fully comp 30k business use miles pa, protected NCD and legal cover. Most places were ~£450 but aviva wer giving 2 months free . WIth a bit of haggling got it down to £300 :-)

For limited mileage on the TVR I use mannings remarkably cheap .

Suggest giving both of these a call.

Next closest on cost was the RAC.

Omega General Help / Re: Drilled and grooved discs
« on: 22 July 2010, 17:54:27 »
Avoid drilled. Even with well known brands its not unheard of for the disks to crack , with the cracks starting in the drill holes.

Note that the disks you see on porsche and ferrari etc are not drilled but are made (cast or moulded depending on material) with holes in situ, so not the same as drilled disks.

Drilling weakens the material , standard disks from a dealer are perfect although may not meet the aesthetic requirement.

I personally wouldnt buy any brake components from ebay - you have no way of knowing what quality control has been applied and for something this critical its just not worth saving a few pounds imho

Omega General Help / Re: Oversteering?
« on: 13 July 2010, 21:36:38 »
I had this when my geometry was way out. Any damp and the back end would step out as if I was driving over a diesel spill. Quick session at WIM sorted it out.

The tyres wont be helping things, geo setup is £60 + vat and worth every penny

WIM first , get the alignment sorted it will be miles out. Then check tyres, what do you have on there ? I had falkens and the car was all over the place , horrible handling despite several trips to WIM. Replaced with Conti's rear and dunlops front and problem has gone.

Omega General Help / Re: Sequence for cooling fans ?
« on: 30 June 2010, 13:46:01 »

so are the 2 front fans twin speed ?
If so what relay or fuse controls the second speed?

Without going out and playing (my car is parked miles away) IIRC one fan is low speed only, and will always be running as long as the aircon is not in eco mode. The other fan is dual speed - when things get too toasty it comes on a super speed and trust me you will know if this happens its loud !. Look in the tech guides may be a fuse layout in there. I am sure the fuses and relays are in the fusebox under the bonnet by the side of the battery. Just take each fuse out in turn to see if any are blown,

This is for my Facelift, I think its the same for older ones although temps may be slightly different. IIRC its aircon on, one fan always runs at low speed. at 92deg th second fan kicks in at half speed. This is enough to bring the temp back down to ~88 then it cuts out. If the temp gets to 97 then the big fan comes on at mental speed and cools everythign down very quickly.

On mine the green fuse under the bonnet near the battery blew so low speed didnt work. Temp would climb to ~100 then this mental speed fan would come on. Blimey its loud.

If all the fans are running and its not cooling down then you could have a cooling system in need of some TLC.

But first check all those fuses by the battery !

Omega General Help / Re: rear speakers
« on: 23 June 2010, 14:14:13 »
My Elite was doing this, turned out the connector for the Bose amp was hanging off and making intermittent contact.

If you dont have an Elite then maybe its just a loose connection somewhere. Ok, so you still need to remove the door cards, but its possible you just need to push some plugs back in.

If I were you I'd start by removing the head unit and checking all the connections , but IIRC that needs some special tools.

I havent really helped much have I  :-/

Omega General Help / Re: Should I worry?
« on: 08 June 2010, 21:35:33 »
Oil must be going somewhere though ? Check in the plug wells for a start. My 3.0 doesnt use a drop between services now, the only time it started slowly losing oil the cam covers gasket had gone.

Omega General Help / Re: Squealing noise on idle

Might be risky if it is the tensioner. Mine was fine, started squeaking as I was driving , failed 5 mins later resulting in a long wait in the snow and flatbed recovery.

try ebay you might be lucky. Last year I picked up a pair of complete mirror units with glass in the right colour for £20.

my 2000 Elite 3.0 typically hovers around 85 on a motorway cruise, rising to 90 in traffic. It runs slightly cooler if you have the aircon on as the rad cooling fans turn slowly. When in ECO mode they turn off.
