Ok. Thanks for the advice Kev.
Welcome to OOF
I would take the head to a local engineering firm to get their opinion before condemning it, tbh. It's difficult to assess it without seeing it in the flesh and we might be worrying about nothing. If it can be skimmed it should be a relatively cheap fix.
Assuming the other head is OK I see no reason not to change just the one. I believe there were differences in the oil pump design which necessitated changes to the lifters and the oil supply valve in the head, so I would either try to get a head from a similar model year or swap these parts from the old head.
See if the old head can be resurrected first though.

like the neatness labling all the bags
That is a big chunk of metal missing there - Maybe a replacement head as well as HG?
"Do it properly" and "Half heartedly" indeed! What sort of insult was that meant to be?
Some interesting comments made but it would be nicer if they had stuck to the 'how is it done part' instead of commenting on the advice of others which should left in the General Discussion area. At least I had pointed to the Maintenance Guide as an assitance.
My comment was supposed to help, not invite put down comments from those who took longer for whatever reason. As with every other job it depends on the skill of the person, the seriousness of the problem and the availability of the correct replacement parts should any be needed. Cleaning time cannot be estimated either.
Couple of hours yes - if you have not got everthing to hand ready as I had because I had pre-planned the job!
It took me just under an hour to do the job 'properly', including the throttle because I timed it from my start time after I had collected everything I needed and had it all to hand. It was also not in such a badly maintained state that it required any longer.
Now retired, I have been in the motor fitter game for over 30 years, nearer to 40 and so I have many years of skills and practice to count on. I dare say there are some even quicker than I was too.
Just follow the guide I pointed you to M8 and if it takes you hours or days at least you will know you have done it yourself and have the satisfaction of knowing that! Its a very good guide so you should have no worries if you follow it and don't try to shortcut it.
I was not to proud to take advice from Darth LooKnee either.

QuoteQuote45 minutes? :-/QuoteIs there any way the Oil cooler is reusable by cleaning it (sorry not mechanically minded)?
If not where can I buy a cheap one as I am in the process of selling the vehicle but have only stumbled on this problem yesterday.
Chris
No, its metal and its degraded so much its now letting oil out of the cooler. Best option is to get the oil cooler kit from a Vx dealer on TC its around £90+ vat
If your handy ish with tools tis not a bad job, otherwise its a 3/4 hour ish job at a garage
3 to 4 hours spanner time sounds do-able....
Flushing out the old oil from the cooling system will take more time and it makes sense to flush out the heater matrix while the system is empty.
I think Tunnie actually meant 3 to 4 hours
When it comes to re-filling the antifreeze can I use the Halfords Advance antifreeze or do I have to use genuine Vauxhall antifreeze?
And how many litres is required?
Note: it does say on the halfords site that there advanced antifreeze meets manufacturers requirements.
