Omega General Help / Re: Insurance

I'll second the point about getting a letter from your employer or fleet manager.  Many people have dropped out of company car schemes over the last few years so the insurers are used to this situation.  I got a letter from my employers when I did this about 5 years ago and it was accepted as proof of no claims.
Jim.
Yup, same here. Get a letter, or write one yourself :y

Omega General Help / Re: Clutch contamination
« on: 25 April 2011, 16:43:46 »
Assuming that you are not having DMF problems, another probable cause strange as it might seem, is failing plug leads.
I have first hand experience of this as I have run a Mercedes 190 for a few years now and it had always suffered from clutch judder which could be controlled if you let the clutch out and fed the revs in 'in the right way'
something that my wife could never master ;D
Anyway, apart from that it ran very smoothly until recently when it developed a misfire then started to run on 3 cylinders. Upon investigation I found that one of the HT leads was arcing out, so I fitted a new set of leads and the car fired up and ran as smoothly as before the misfire set in but with  the added benefit that the clutch judder had dissapeared. I can only conclude that the leads were breaking down slowly and that when extra load was put on the system when setting off from rest it was causing the engine to stutter setting off the clutch judder.

So maybe its time for an ignition system overhaul?

may be not the best time to mention i have had a torque converter fail, however it was on a diesel(mrs omegatoys) and it was a seam had a small hole didnt leak when standing still, but gave al the apearances of the seal had gone as it came out with a steady drip when the car was running!! changed seal, and it still leaked!oh bummocks it all had to come out again!! cleaned torque converter off, and found the tiny hole in it , it was actually behind one of the drive plate mounting bolts, so guessing someone had changed box or had box out for something, then couldnt get it to close up tight, so used the bolts to pull it in? just a theory, but its the only torque verter ive ever known to fail

Absolutely the best time to mention it :y

Omega General Help / Re: Wishbone Torque figure
« on: 23 April 2011, 07:10:43 »
When i did mine I pulled the torque wrench through another 45 deg by noting where the wrench was when it clicked, and geusstimating where it should be 45deg furrther on which is 1 eighth of a turn.

Omega General Help / Re: Vibration from Engine
« on: 22 April 2011, 21:42:06 »
Does it vibrate in neutral when you rev it then lift off the throttle? check the auxillarly belt tensioner to make sure the belt is not slack. also check the water pump, power steering and aircon compressor pulleys for play.
It could also be that the front pulley which is also a harmonic damper is on the way out.

Omega General Help / Re: Aluminium cam covers
« on: 22 April 2011, 22:08:23 »
I have fitted aluminum ones to mine. The benefits are that the gaskets for the aluminum covers are far superior to the ones for the plastic covers in that they are quite a lot wider and therefore have a more efficient seal.
Also you can use cheaper aftermarket gaskets without fear of oil leaks unlike the plastic covers which must be fitted with expensive genuine gaskets.
The ally covers have to be fitted so that the oil filler is at the back of the drivers side bank next to the master cylinder, but this does not pose a problem when filling with oil as i use a schweppes(it must be schweppes :y) tonic  bottle with the bottom cut off as a funnel.

You must keep the breather system clean to ensure that that crankcase pressure does not build up and force oil out of here there and everywhere, there are guides on here that tell you how to clean them out.
some people will try to tell you that if you use aluminum covers that all your oil seals will burst and that you will go to hell, but my advice is to fit em and forget em :y

Omega General Help / Re: Dispack change

As a complete newbie to what most of you call a "proper" engine :D. On the breaker I need to change the dispack (3.0) to cure this multiple misfire. EP is posting me a known good replacement. My question: I`ve removed the scuttle, I can just about see the HBV. Can`t see the DIS. Is it as per the guide in maintenance or would removing other stuff make it easier :-[ :y
When you say breaker, do you mean you intend to break the car for spares and need to replace the dis to prove the engine is ok? if that is the case dont bother removing the old one, just reconnect the leads and power plug to the new dis and leave it on top of the engine while you test it.

Omega General Help / Re: Unsure what to do with Omega Elite
« on: 21 April 2011, 06:10:15 »
It wont be 'cams'. it sounds like its jumped a tooth or 2 on the timing belt. I have heard a 3.0 litre run with the timing a few teeth out and they do sound rattly and rough, which to the uninitiated would seem like duff cams.

Get somone to check the valve timing. you may be lucky and get away with a new belt kit.

Omega General Help / Re: Exhaust blow -but only from cold

Been trying to search out previous posts for this but no luck. so appologies if it has been asked before.

When starting my 3. 0 facelift  from  cold it sounds like quite a loud exhaust blow from somewhere on the nearside of the car.  After  about a minute - it stops & is quiet as normal . It seems to co-incide with the revs dropping as the engine warms.  Does not do it when engine is started warmed up :-/ :-/

Any ideas where to look first ? :-/ :-/ :-/

TIA   Al :y

I would have a look to see if there are any codes stored, but my bet would be plug leads breaking down :y

Ah, Pimhole, what a wonderfull place. I havent been there since the late eighties. Whats it like now? I used to go there to get bits for for my Triumph 2.5, parts were cheaper than the Preston yards as there were so many scrappys competing for your custom.
As i recall there was a corner of one yard that had nothing but NSU R080'S in it :)

Undo the screws holding the headlights in, disconect the wiring, fit new headlights in reverse order. Go to pub :y
