General Car Chat / Re: I need a bigger car

The newer ones cost a fortune, which I really can't justify for a mobile dog kennel, and the older ones mostly have starship miles. I also notice the older ones have very little in the way of tech. My poxy 7 year old Astra has more...android auto, apple play, etc.

My best mate has a Mk4 Mondeo estate and has done for a good number of years. Other than a clutch and DMF it's never needed anything much beyond service items and it's on 145k now.

In the time he's owned it he's abused it renovating three houses and hasn't been fastidious with the maintenance, so overall it seems like a tough old barge.

It's also big and comfy and can have plenty of toys if you venture up then trim levels.

Or, it shows that picking your population for the survey gives you the answer you want.

Asking 1000 Guardian reading, sandal wearing vegetablists probably gives you a different answer to 1000 Daily Mail reading England football fans.  ;D

The real question is, are there more sandal wearers or football fans...  ???

Ultimately, this is really down to your comfort level.

I recently did the zafira at 103k and 14yrs old  :-X. The belt was shiny on the non-toothed side but there was no cracking. Clearly this will vary car to car but my point is, I wouldn't be as dogmatic as some about the 4yr interval.

Ultimately it's how much risk you're willing to take, and only you can decide that. :y

Discovered that the air struts on the zaf tailgate have gone lazy. I discovered this by parking the car on a dark street and using the very top of my forehead to find the tailgate lip - at speed. >:(

So this morning i contemplated buying a gallon of petrol and some matches. But settled on some replacement struts, which were nearly the same price.

I find mine really useful when a) access is tight or b) using it in a room that's already decorated due to the comparatively low levels of dust they produce.

I have a Makita one, but only because I already had the batteries. The only negative thing I have to say about them is the noise they make. Won't make you popular with anyone else in the house!

Or uploading the picture to an image hosting site and messaging them the link. Depending on the exact nature of their technical limitations  ;D

If you need to replace the bearings at any point. Try these guys, they've always been extremely helpful, even with really obscure stuff like phosphor bronze bushings for a 1980's cement mixer  ;D

I found the video of the tractor going through Rufford Ford at the weekend quite amusing, I did wonder where the concrete blocks that had been placed to close the road had gone, after a minute, it became obvious  ;D

That JD is an impressive piece of kit!

I do wonder how confident he was at about 0:40 that it was coming out...  ;D

Often the way.

If you're that set on having the best of whatever, even normal use would be seen as degrading it.

I would much rather a used but well maintained example that I can just get in and drive without worrying in degrading a museum piece.

Plenty of lovely DB7 out there which would leave you with enough change out of £40k to buy a TDV8 RR for the winter 🤣

Visually, I get it. But having shoe-horned myself in and out of my dad's e-type on a few occasions, I can't imagine owning something so small as a B.

And if I were spending £40k on a weekend car, it would probably have an Aston badge on the nose, rather than MG.  :y

cost including the purchase approaching £40,000

That's an insane amount for a B! But still, if it's what he wants and has the money, why not!

If you put the full model and type number into Google, exploded diagrams and part numbers are readily available from a number of websites.

Mine has a replacement oil drain plug available to buy, so it must be there somewhere  8)

Excuse the ignorance, but how can they blame the driver

At a guess, contributory negligence would be a most likely route they would try.

Say for example video footage emerged showing he'd driven several miles with the thing smoking / on fire, they might try to say he was negligent not to notice and pull over sooner.

Daughter works for an insurance company , she was saying they've had a lot of claims from the Luton Airport fire and some claims have already been paid out !
Won't the insurer of the car that caught fire originally have to pay out for the lot?

Yes, but...

Every car owner will claim on their own insurance as a no-fault claim (also probably will the building owner, and anyone with applicable travel insurance who had their journeys disrupted). Then all those insurers will seek to recover costs from the insurer of the car that was determined as the cause of the fire. If it goes to court (which can take years), the court then buckets up all of the claims by type and makes a determination as to whether each type of claim is payable by the insurer.

All the while, the insurer of the original car will be looking for reasons not to pay out and shift blame onto the driver. If this happens then the driver would likely have to declare bankruptcy (unless he or she is good for £30m or so) and then the insurers may be able to claim out of a pot that they all have to pay into for uninsured losses. If they can't then the individual insurers will have to take the hit on behalf of their clients.

Ordered a genuine B&S carb overhaul kit plus spark plug and air filter. Up to £46 spent now.

A couple of other minor repairs required (crack in the grass box plus front wheels seem out of alignment and don't raise and lower quite evenly) but nothing a quiet afternoon in the garage won't cure  8)

Also sucked out all the petrol and dumped it in the Zaf. I don't want to add to my woes by letting it sit over winter.
