Omega General Help / Re: Front Wipers Overshooting?
« on: 11 March 2007, 23:53:33 »

Sounds to me as though the wiper mechanism has slipped on its drive shaft which would park the wipers in the wrong position.
...perhaps someone being handcuffed across the windscreen while the wipers were running? :o

If you remove the wiper mechanism and find the output shaft from the motor there is a short plate bolted to it. This should sit within 2 V's stamped onto the wiper linkage when the wiper motor has come to its natural stop position.
Is it easy to get the motor and mechanism out?

sounds like the linkage assembly isn't on quite right, they should come to rest at the bottom of the sweep - ie, not go any lower. You will need to:

  • undo the nut, remove the wiper from its' spline and reposition so it's 1.5" above its' current position
  • repeat for the other side
  • undo the nut on the wiper motor, lift off the linkage there, rotate so it's horizontal, then refit the nut
this should then do the trick ...
Won't this just cause the spline inside the arms to strip when the arms go down at start?

:y Hi all, any ideas as to why the windscreen wipers on my Omega "overshoot" about 1.5 inches at the bottom of the widscreen? after overshooting they come back to the proper resting position when switched off! The wipers make a clunking sound when they overshoot the windscreen when hitting the plastic vent tray thing below the windscreescreen. The wipers almost make contact with the bonnet! :(
Is this a common fault that could be solved with a new wiper motor or is it a simple repair?
Any help appreciated. Marcus
Well, if two Omegas is anything to go by, then it's a common fault. My ex-police estate has the exact same fault. I've been so busy lately that I haven't had time to check it out, but I can tell you it's not normal.

On mine, someone had obviously disassembled part of it, because they had swapped the arms left with right (just to keep me on my toes I guess)  >:(

MID is a Tech2 job officially, needs to be reprogrammed to match the car.

Unofficially, there is a wire you can short out somewhere, don't have the wiring diagrams to hand at present.
Having just upgraded my car to a CID, I can tell you the wire from the AutoTrans is Grey and connected to pin 21 on the 32 pin plug at the back of the display. Of course it also comes up somewhere underneath the car.
In your case, when they pair the stereo to it, ensure they tell the stereo/screen that its a manual/auto/hids etc as appropriate...
Cheers TB  :y

Sounds as thought you've just converted your car from Auto to manual, in which case your auto gearbox wiring will be there, but the MID won't be seeing the signal from it as it expects. I think this is a Tech 2 job - needs to tell the MID or ECU that the car is now a manual not auto.

I think TheBoy is the expert on this.

The oil will be pretty bad....as for Tech 2.....they dont know what they are talking about....
I'd have to double check, but I don't think there is a level sensor (if there was surely it would flag up g/box on MID?), so how the hell is a Tech2 going to help....  ....I love dealers  >:(
I was quoted £300 to change the auto trans oil from Phoenix VX - apparently its no good just changing the fluid, you need to give it a complete service - thats what the receptionist said  ;)

2.5 heads have lower volume -> higher CR.
What about valves and ports , are they smaller than 3.0?

Also, how do the 2.6 heads compare to the 3.2 - can you up compression on a 3.2 by fitting 2.6 heads?

Chances of this improving my MPG?

Quite a bit I'd say. The ECU won't now think that the car is constantly warming up (bit like having the choke on).

Why do you think it had been ripped out in the first place, is the rest of the cooling system in order?

Phoenix in Wimbledon quoted me £140+ and he had this sort expression on his face at the time  ;D

I bought a blank from Lithuania off eBay, and a used fob off eBay. Now I just have to buy a carpass and convince TB to programme it all up for me  ::)

If it's only losing vacuum under acceleration, it looks as though it may be a problem with the Vacuum Reservoir or associated hoses and non-return valve.

My copy of TIS2000 shows the reservoir positioned under the scuttle, bolted via two bolts to the pollen filter housing.

The coolant sitting in the well looks as though it has been there a long time. If the photograph is correct, the orange stain looks like corrosion reside from the coolant. If it is, the likely culprit is the adjacent thermostat housing or oil cooler plate, although it's hard to tell if either is leaking from the photograph.

Facelift manuals downloadable from Vauxhall, along with Audio manuls...

Just tried that, but after I register and log in, they tell me to buy it from my nearest VX dealer...
Pick the 'Show all Manuals' option...
DOH!

Got it thanks TB and JH.

Apologies again for the hijack, but clearly an intersesting subplot here.

Just to say that I remember something in the technical blurb for the second generation of "emission V8s" that Holden introduced in the early Eighties. They had improved emissions over the previous generation partly acheived through the use of a very mild performance camshaft which had an increased inlet/exhaust valve overlap. It's all starting to make sense.
