General Car Chat / Re: Diesel
« on: 25 August 2015, 14:03:24 »
The only real issue with modern diesels are the DPFs and that's a driving style challenge.

Diesel makes a lot of sense when doing big miles, doing short journeys its a fools fuel.

This is a contributing factor for me living in London cant commute anywhere by car and the huge bills mentioned + DPF. Given my current annual mileage V8 can be justified but I wouldn't like to pay £500 tax annually

I know, I know

But I just don't like them. Maybe because they sound like a tractor? Again modern ones probably don't suffer from this

I have never owned one and for some reason which I can't explain can't see myself owning one soon. I know modern diesels are much better than they used to be but still  :-\

Are the running costs more?
Do they still cost more to buy than equivalent petrol models?
Fall in diesel prices, is this long term?

I had a main dealer bill for my Omega for around £700-£800 shortly before I purchased it (can't remember on what). A week later, the chap had a HBV fitted for around £180. There was a note scribbled on the first bill saying something along the lines of "customer came in last week spent lots of money and now car has water leak".

Did they care? Still fleeced the poor guy.

Aren't modern cars galvanised to prevent this (or at least keep it at bay for 10-15 years?). With the E39, it appears they rust really badly around the sills (amongst other places) and you need to take the covers off to see the true extent. Not really possible to do during a viewing

Problem with these is they rust worse than Omegas!    :-\   Maybe I should save up for the E60 as ugly as they are or wait for a mint Omega

There is a premium all right. I have found a 540 Sport that I will be looking at after the Bank Holiday. Its in Imola Red with 18" wheels and black leather. Not perfect, will need a bit of TLC.

The 6cyl models have a steering rack and supposedly handle better (or at least provide better feedback and response) than the V8 which has a steering box. But the noise and grunt should make up for that

I like that shape 5 series but to me its just another car the same age as the Omega which will need just as much maintenance work.

And will probably cost more. But the Omega has no V8 option  ;)  To be honest, I'd rather have a mint 3.2 but they really are thin on the ground and I have been looking for 10 months
