Omega General Help / Re: Cam Cover Gasket Tips Please

I’m changing the cam cover gaskets and cleaning the breathers tomorrow (weather permitting!).  I’ve read the How-To guides, but some questions for those in the know please re. the cam cover gasket replacement:

1)  Applying the sealant – does that go only under the gasket (i.e. between the head and the gasket), or also between the gasket and the cover?

--> Only on the head (alloy) bit, not on the camcover (plastic).

2)  Is keeping the new gaskets in place whilst the cover is being manouvered into position likely to be an issue?

--> Not really, though you do need to make sure it is in the groove...

3)  Is there a sequence/order for tightening the cam cover bolts?

--> None specified, but it is sensible to cross tighten them as you would do with a cylinder head. What I did was finger-tighten them first, then using the Torque Wrench gradually cross-tightened them to the specified 8NM.

Thanks in advance.
Couldn't see a groove in the mating surface on the head from the HowTo pics - so is it on the underside of the cover...implying you mate the gasket to the cover first and then mate both to the head?

Indeed so.

There is no issue with sealing between the rubber gasket and the camcover, it is only the bendy bits (as shown in the how-to) between the rubber gasket and the alloy head that need the sealant.

Sealant is applied to the head and camshaft front bearing cap. It is only needed at the sharp corners, so either side of the 'D's and in the transition between head and bearing cap.
2)  Is keeping the new gaskets in place whilst the cover is being manouvered into position likely to be an issue?
Only on the N/S head but easier if you have removed the cable tray from the wiring loom.
3)  Is there a sequence/order for tightening the cam cover bolts?
Use good practice...start in the middle and work towards the ends, nip all bolts gently then torque up properly
Thanks in advance.

I should really learn to type faster, Matcheless....  ;D

--> Not really, though you do need to make sure it is in the groove... i.e. you stick it in the camcover and then gently lower the camcover with the gasket into place (the gasket wont fall out). Before tightening, have a look all around (and feel with your finger at the back to make sure no part of the gasket is bulging out, though this is unlikely to happen.

The camber on the road sometimes make your car go to the left or right could this be it?

True, I use to test mine while driving diagonally across an empty car park (e.g. at the back of a motorway services car park)....

If the car is only slightly pulling the left, you may just have to live with it... I had two Omegas and both were slightly pulling to the left, even the super professional full-geometry done by Tony from WIM) only reduced the pull but did not cure it completely.

Having said that, make sure you get the full-geometry done (see www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk for full explanation), and if the front tyres are not directional then try swapping them around (i.e. right-to-left and vice versa).

Hi guys, I don`t want to go crazily low but what are the best options on changing springs etc..........would MV6 parts do the job, and is there anything else that would have to be changed or adjusted, in fact is it at all poss with self levelling???

Self-levelling can be disconnected by removing the air pressure hose from the nipple at the top of the shock.

Some confusion as to how MV6 are lowered, either same springs with shorter shocks, or same shocks with shorter springs (I think it depends on the year i.e. facelift and pre-facelift), but in principal if you get the relevant MV6 bits (i.e. springs or shocks) then the car will go down...

For info, Vx official replacement schedule for the pollen filter is every 2 years regardless of mileage.

Hi all
Just gone to check my pollen filter and theres nothing there, what i need to know is if the pollen filter just slides in or does it fit in to another box , all i can see are the heater fans, hay fevers a real bummer

Just  a check where are you looking for the pollen filter  :question

Good point iggy21uk...

eddie h, it is under the plastic scuttle cover on the passenger side at the base of the windscreen. It is held in place by two flimsy plsatic clips   that can break easily.... if you pull the clips down, the old filter (if present) should drop slitghtly and you can then take it out.

There are 2 types of filter .. a black one (carbon) and a white one (normal) .. the black one is supposed to reduce noxious smells ??

from the TC site :

Omega                   Part Number        Retail Price        Normal Trade        Trade Club
Pollen Filters
All models to '99         93182438            £11.85             £10.00           £5.32

All models from '00       93165208          £15.15           £13.64       £11.04

so the "old" one one TC is dirt cheap !!

eddie h, your car being a facelift model according to the picture, will need the Active Charcoal filter i.e. the more expensive one. Said that, Vx fitted the old type in my facelift in one of the services and I did not notice any difference.. in theory the old non-Charcoal one is supposed to be no good because it can confuse the Climate ECU on the facelift models (automatic air quality monitoring and all that), but as said I did not notice any change....

Sadly, mayo on dipstick is bad news. Luckily, a head gasket job on the 4-cylinder should not be too expensive.... compared to the V6 anyway.

I would still start with checking that bulb....

Pressing the button doesn't do anything since the problem started...and TC is definately not working - it cuts in way too early for my liking when it's functioning, and that isn't happening anymore.

When you are saying that the TC 'cuts in way too early', presumably the TC does not actually come-on on the instrument panel (which it should do)? If so then your TC is working, but both the bulb and the on/off switch do not...? I would defintely take off the instrument panel (easy job - see maintenance guides section) and check that bulb as first step.

...and when you took-off the other head, was the gasket actually in poor state as expected?

What gasket? ;D

Yes, it was that bad.... all that were left of the gaskets on both sides were the fire rings. The composite material was completely rotton.. by lack of correct antifreeze!

Good job you took it off then....
