Omega General Help / 2.5 TD aux belt tensioner Part number question
« on: 05 January 2017, 19:14:56 »
Went to start the 2.5Td this morning and the aux belt tensioner deceided it was not going to work any more. Brakeing in 3 and snaping both belts.

Having done a serch on the web for a new one, all I can find are parts listed for the P38 Range Rover:

STC4608   Bracket
STC2126   Boss
STC2128   Pully
STC4168   Damper ram

Am I correct in thinking that they are the same parts used on the Omega?

Has any one got a full assenbly for sale, before i spend £100 on a new one?

Thanks for any help. Chris.

Engine is now all back together.
Took her for a  20 mile run and all seems fine. No EML light or water drips.
Will keep a cheak on her over the next few days and see how she goes.

Just as well really, as I went to start my 2.5TD this morning and there was a big bang.... Aux belt tensioner in 3 peaces and 2 snaped belts. >:(

Cool. did wonder if it was a breather pipe.

It is not really losing coolent, the header tank did drop a bit, (after 300 mile with caravan) but not enough for the light to come on. It just has a slow drip off the bottom p/s bell housing that seems to be running down the bell housing.

Going to carry on flushing system for a while yet, but would like to sort the EML light out and be able to use the car.

Omega General Help / 2.6 engine advice needed please.
« on: 04 January 2017, 20:56:43 »
Background History
I purchased a 2.6 V6 Omega back in December, with a suspected oil cooler failure. I drove the car 60 miles back home with no problems.
The oil cooler was removed and pressure tested, and found to be good. As the cooler looked new, I concluded that the cooler had been replaced recently but the cooling system had not been flushed fully, and that was the reason for oil in the water.
The engine was re assembled and cooling system flushed, then the car was taken for a 30 mile test run, once again no problems where found apart from a small water leak.
The water leak seemed to be coming from the passenger side at the back of the engine, so the intake system was removed again as I suspected that a water pipe may have been damaged when moved to gain access to the oil cooler.
Even with the cooling system pressurised, I could not find the leak. As I wished to use the car the following day, I put it all back together and hoped for the best.
The next day all was fine for about 40 mile, then suddenly the EML (engine symbol) light flickered for about 30 seconds and then came on parentally . As I was on a motorway with the caravan on the back, I continued on until the services about another 10 mile then stopped. A quick inspection revealed nothing, so I started the engine again, No EML light. I spent about 10 mins playing with the revs of the engine and still no EML light came on. So off we set again, all was fine for about 10 mile, then on came the light again. As it was not having any effect on the cars running, and we had a caravan park to get to, I continued the journey of about another 100 mile.
The following day on starting the car, the light was off at first, then came on about 10 mile into the journey, and has remained on ever since.

To Day.
A new set of rocker cover gaskets arrived today so the engine has been striped down for a third time. 2 things have been found that I need advice on:

1. The sound proofing on the baulk head above the p/s head is very wet. Where could the water becoming from? Is it my water leak?

2. I found a 8/10mm pipe not connected to anything and can't see where it should go to. See pic. Seems to go down to the gear box. Could this pipe not being connected, be the cause of the EML light coming on? As all was fine with the EML light before I took the injetion system off, I'm thinking that it is something I have done.

Thanks for any help.
Chris.

Omega General Help / Re: Omega X25XE coolant leak - strange location?
« on: 22 December 2016, 18:57:22 »
I was sort of right. ;D

So it is advisable to remove the cooler and fit an external one?

It would keep the oil cooler when the engine is at operation temp, but would take a lot longer to get the engine up to temp, as you are not only, not getting the coolant heating the oil but you are also cooling the oil with the external cooler. ???

I may be wrong, but I have been told that the "oil cooler" is in fact a heat transfer unit.
It is not there to cool the oil, it is to allow heat transfer between the oil and water  to bring the engine up to operating temp. quickly.

I think that you're actually cocking up the whole thing. Massive difference between the CIH straight 6s of Carltons, versus the V6s... the V6 was designed to have cats from day one. The straight 6s weren't. Something to do with how the back pressure of an engine does actually help combustion, and there whole thing is tuned, with exhaust valve opening times and so forth,  to work with the reduced flow that having cats fitted causes.

It is said that Omegas (Cavs, Calibras, Vectras, Signums) run worse when decatted.  :)

Don't know about the above, but I am running a 2.5 V6 in my Manta A. It is a standard engine and ECU. EGR removed, lightend fly wheel, custom headers and exhaust, G cams.
Last time I had her on the rollers, she was booked at 215bhp.

Omega General Help / Help with funny knocking noise from 2.6 v6
« on: 30 November 2016, 20:34:39 »
As most will know i have been flushing the cooling system on my 2.6 after an oil cooler change.

All has been good untill this afternoon, when warming the engine up a funny knocking noise started on tickover. It comes and goes and sounds like it is comeing from the back of the d/s bank.

Could it be the coil spark shorting out to the head? as the rubber sleives between the coils and spark plugs have seen better days.

Advice please.

The noise starts around the 6 sec mark on the vidio below.

I love the colour too, it did help me to decide to buy it.

Well got the oil cooler out today, only to find that it had already been replace sometime in the not to distant past. It looked very new but to make sure I did a pressure test on it, by putting it in water and then connecting it to an air line, no air bubbles to be seen. So I think the oil in the header tank must be from whoever changed the cooler didn't fully flush the system out.

Any way not all was lost as I found that the d/s rocker cover was leaking, leaking that bad that all 3 spark plug hole were full of oil.  Upon taking the cover off i found the next problem, the rubber sleeves that go on to the coil pack were falling apart. I gave Vauxhall a ring only to find out that the sleeves are not sold separately and only come with a new coil @ £150 +vat a side. So out came the super glue.

Got her all back together tonight and ran her up to temp with no problems, so tomorrow I'll flush the system a few more times and we should be good to go.

  . . . & remember to  get the dishwasher tabs ready  ;D ;D

Are you serious about the dishwasher tabs and if so how do you use them?

Regarding the pros and cons of the 2.6, I am not looking for a sporty car ( I have a 215bhp X25XE in my Manta A, for that  ) I've been driving a 2.5TD for the last 6 years, so as long as it's that good I'll be happy. It will mainly be used for towing a caravan, and as I am an old git now, even when not towing I tend to sit around 70/80mph at the most. Yes a 3.0 or 3.2 would have been nice, but this one just came up at the right price.

Omega Gallery / My new purchase. 2.6 Estate.
« on: 28 November 2016, 23:06:29 »
Well after reading all your comments and advice given on my other threads, I deceided to take the plung, I am now the owner of a 2.6 Auto CDX Estate. :y

As the cost of getting her transported up to me was too expencive, I deceided to take the risk (oil cooler leaking) and drive her the 66 miles home. I needent of worried, she ran like a dream. At a steady average of 60mph, the temp never went above 80 and the trip comp. gave an average of 31mpg.

Over all she seems to be a solid motor, bottom of doors and rear arches are very good, paint work is ok but it does have a few scratches and the laquer on the roof is lifting in a few places.

So what are my plans?
First thing to do is sort the oil cooler out, which I have started today, should have it all back together tomorrow and then it's a case of getting the cooling system flushed out fully.

Once she is fixed, then I will use her as an every day car for a while and see how I get on with an auto. Never liked auto's, always been a manual person, but I am starting to get problems with my left foot and pressing the clutch.

If I like it, then I don't know what 'll end up doing.  Do I keep it and sell my 2.5TD manual?

Omega General Help / Re: Urgent advice, broken down.

Estates do not like starting when the fuel level is very low, even though they will do several miles past the displayed range.

I agree with the above statment. My estate will strugle to start if the tank is showing below 20 l.

Thanks for all the replies. :y

Another question, how much of the F/L car could be swoped over on to my TD ?
My thinking is, that if I do buy it and then find that i don't like it, could I use it as donner parts to tidy up my TD.

Thinking about the doors, as the doors on my TD have seen better days and if I do keep the TD, it would be nice to give it a bit of TLC.

With transport ect. I'm looking at around £500 to get the car home and sort out the oil cooler, my thinking is, If I don't get on with it, then I should be able to sell on without too much loss or I could use it as a donner for my TD.

Thanks for any advice.
