Omega General Help / Grumbling??
« on: 14 August 2009, 15:38:24 »
Hi Folks,

I've noticed that at motorway speeds in my Miggy, when I lift off the accellerator, there's a grumbling noise.  Put my foot back down to accellerate, and it disappears.

Any ideas??

Cheers Jimbob.

Yes, fingers crossed...  I take it symptoms of duffed fan speed controller is that you can't alter speed of fan?  If so, I think it should be ok, because I had the heater on this morning and altered the speed of the fans - it seemed to be working fine.

Cheers folks, I'll clear it out at the weekend.  When I say "I", I very much doubt my arm would fit down.  But I reckon one of my daughter's would...  I sense a bit of an income generatation opportunity for one of em here!  ;D

There was only a tiny bit of water at the bottom of the drain though, and no sign that the water level has been high, but would I be correct in guessing that there shouldn't be any water in there at all?

As for sunroof drains Pitchfork - that'll be easy; mine is lacking a sunroof  :)

Omega General Help / Wet carpets....
« on: 21 August 2009, 10:36:45 »
Hi Folks,

Noticed last night that the carpets in the passenger-side footwell are soaked, front and back.  Driver's side is dry as a bone.

My first thought was heater matrix, but coolant level hasn't budged.

I checked underneath the wiper panel (where the access flap is to get to the panel filter), and there was only a tiny bit of water right at the bottom of the channel.

Checked door seals etc, and all is fine.  No windows/doors have been left even slightly open either.

Oh, and nothing has been spilt in the car either!

Anybody any ideas what can be causing this???  :-/

Your best bet would be to fit spring assisters - far easier, and much more cost effective.  Have a look on the Towsure website - www.towsure.co.uk, and do a search for spring assisters.

Omega General Help / Re: one problem fixed but now.........
« on: 15 August 2009, 00:04:32 »
Had a similar problem with a Jeep I used to have.

Took it to a local garage to have a new HG and cylinder head fitted.  The day after we picked it up, it started running really rough.  Garage took it back, supposidly sorted it, then the problem started again a couple of days later.

I told the garage I was going to drop it off for them to sort, and they said that they wouldn't touch it again - they told me to cut my losses and sell it on!

They soon changed their tune when I informed them that I would be leaving my car with them until it was fully sorted, and that if they had any issues with this that they could take it up with my friend who just so happens to be a solicitor.

Suprisingly, they did sort it out in the end...   ::)

The morale of the story - you've paid for a job, and they ain't delivered.  It's a case of sticking to yer guns with them.

I understand your concerns - I had exactly the same concerns!!

But lets put it this way - before I took it to Kwik-Fit, there's a local air-con "specialist" near where I work.  He took off one of the dust caps and shoved a door key inside to see if there was any gas left.

Obviously, the gas started coming out, and he said "Yep, I can refill that - there's gas left in it, so it means there's no leaks in the system.  It'll only take me 10 minutes".  Needless to say, I told him (very politely  >:( ) to get the f*** off my car, and I'll take it elsewhere.

I think the main beef with Kwik-Fit is the fact that it's all computer-controlled (albeit if that computer is controlled by a chav).  I was chatting to the manager when I picked it up, and he said that if there's any leaks that show under the vac test, they will not put any gas in it, and show where the leak is so you can sort it at your leisure.

Can't say no fairer than that in my opinion

Omega General Help / Kwik-Fit Air Con
« on: 03 July 2009, 23:42:28 »
Hi Folks,

I've heard a bit of negativity from some friends of mine around Kwik-Fit's air con recharge deal not being too great.

Well, mine had packed in a few weeks ago (just in time for the warm weather  >:( )

A friend at work had his done at the Kwik-Fit round the corner from where we work, and he highly recommended their services (he has a concourse Mk3 Astra GSi Ecotec).

Well, I took a gamble, and early doors the other morning (5am...  ::) ) I left my Mig there and shoved my keys through their letterbox in an envelope telling them what I wanted doing.

Anyway, I picked it up after I finished work.  They had done a great job - freezing cold it was.  They went through what they'd done - fully vacc'ed it down, pressure tested it, put the stipulated amount of lubricant and gas in, and added the UV dye too.

Part of the quality of service might be down to the fact that the chap who did it said he's always's loved Mig's, and he's on the look out for one.  Needless to say, I pointed him in the way of this forum  :y

In summary, I think when it comes to a company as large as Kwik-Fit, the quality of work differs on a branch-to-branch basis

Omega General Help / Lack of power - would like some advice :-(
« on: 03 July 2009, 23:57:36 »
Hi folks,

Well, since I've been running my poor Miggy into the ground this last month, things seem to be going from bad to worse with her :-(

Firstly, every now and again, the engine vibrates quite badly - like it's missing on a cylinder or two.  Sometimes it's when the engine's cold, sometimes it's after shifting into a higher gear.  (I would have thought it was clutch judder, but there's no clutch slip under hard accelleration).

Secondly, it feels like it's lacking grunt.  It does pick up eventually, but it takes a while.

Thirdly, over 60mph, when I lift off the accellerator, there's a grumbling noise - it goes away when I put my foot down, but comes back when I lift off.  This is accopanied by some vibrations.  Could it be the prop shaft centre bearing, or is the diff stuffed??

Fourthly, the suspension wheezes quite a bit when going over speed bumps, and the car feels a bit "bouncy" - I take it that means it's time for me to fit new shockers?

Any advice would be greatly appreaciated  :y

Sorry to hear about that amba...

I think that running it with such a lack of oil wouldn't have done it any favours at all...

Might be worth draining it and re-filling it, adding some of that Lucas Stop-Noise in it too - worth a try?

If that doesn't do the trick, then it may be time to look for a replacement diff...  :(

mine was making a noise from the back, found out my handbrake shoes had come adrift on one side, might be worth a look ;)

Aye, if your diff oil is on the level, jack up each rear wheel one at a time (with the handbrake off, and the car in neutral - and front wheels chocked of course!).  Check for play in the wheel-bearings by trying to move the wheel back and forth in the 12-6 and 3-9 positions.  Any play would suggest wheelbearings.

Then try spinning the wheel and seeing if there's any obviously loud noise coming from the brake disk/hub area, which would suggest handbrake shoes.

But my money is still on the diff
