Interesting article .Early next year, I intend having a tow bar fitted to our Spanish car.

Dockyard job. Find an authorised fitter. Pay for the job and then take it to government mot station where they OK it or reject. When OK’d it gets added to your vehicle documentation. If it isn’t there at your next MOT it is a fail. 20 years ago we used to regularly see incidents where trailers/ tow bars/ cars had parted company. Haven’t seen one for years since they tightened up the rules.

I am with Linea Directa ( same company as Direct Line) so will make sure they know.

We don’t see hardly any modified cars. The few that are I suspect are returned to factory spec for MOTs. You can get a fail for having tyres of a size not homologated or speed rating shown on vehicle documentation. I had to prove the mini facelift Elite 16 inch wheels were an Opel homolgated option when I put our uk car onto Spanish plates……

I wonder if Trump will pardon Penn?

“ I wasn’t even going to say anything about Trump’s hair. I live in a glass house. I’ve always had ugly, out-of-style hair. Trump’s hair is a lot better than mine—but as I sat there for hours half listening to Donald carry on, it struck me exactly what his hair looked like. It looks like cotton candy made of piss”

Apparently he is on a list that are gonna get retribution. I wonder if I am on the list for smiling at that comment?

You could not make America up.

We had a Daimler xj ( or (Damiler as the mot man wrote) . Cheaper to insure than a Jaguar! And better equipped

General Car Chat / Cat weigh in
« on: 01 December 2024, 14:23:25 »
I burst into action today and dug up my spare V6 exhausts. Out with the angle grinder and I now have cats to put in car to weigh in in Britain somewhere. The idea is to fill the car with stuff to pay for our upcoming grand tour.

However, far from having 4 worth maybe £400? There are two pattern ones and two original. Of the latter , one looks intact and the other is “ totally empty”!  Might be lucky to get 200!

I have also found a place here that pays a euro a kilo for alloy wheels. So I am set to be a vandal and weigh in 6 x 16 inch Elite mini facelift alloys.

Stuff has got to go, downsizing:………

Lol

Had a garage crawl over the car for last two days. Grumble isn’t a wheel bearing!

Mrs V had a slap up meal last night ( 118 euros ) . No mushy peas just some fancy seaweed .

Well things have moved on.

Found a wheel remanufacture place. Turned up thirty minutes before they closed for the weekend. Guy says I will put two loan wheels on your car and ring you when I have checked and rectified problem. As it was quiet he put both rears on his machine and pronounced them fine. One needed a slight adjustment to balance. The very slight vibration has gone. The rumble noise is still there. Could just be tyre noise or something in transmission. Either way we are going to live with it. Only need to get another 15 k miles out of the car

Ugh steel wheels. No thanks. We will not be anywhere that needs them ( famous last words) . If weather is that bad we will dig in somewhere and enjoy the Christmas spirit.

Thing is with buying second hand alloys, is that they are probably as scabby and bent as yours!  ::)

I'm sure that if you turned up at the refurb place with a couple of steels in the boot they'd put them on for you, if you arranged that with them in advance.  :y

I had two cars at the time I had mine done so was able to leave the Mondeo on stands and blocks and drop all 4 wheels off with the Volvo.  :)

The neighbours probably thought I was lowering the tone with an old abandoned car with no wheels blocked up on my drive!  ;D

One of our Spanish neighbours broke down outside our house . Knocked the door and asked can we leave 4x4 here, it has broken down. We said sure and helped them push it so we could get in and out.

Weeks later and it still hadn’t gone but no matter. However we came home and found it with no wheels and stood on four big logs we were processing. More weeks passed and they drove by in a newer Pajero with the recovered wheels.!

More time passed and one day a recovery truck came and actually dragged it, wheelers , onto the truck. Only in Spain. ;D

Ah you know Britain needs all this cheap labour for jobs that the indigenous population don’t want to do.

Make ‘em legal and welcome 300,000 a year with open arms like Spain is doing.

That is a logistical nightmare with no jack and no spare wheel. I can see there are some at Leicester.

Might have to buy two spare steels and a jack and then sell them back to scrap yard later  ;D

Bit of a shock. Took my car into a large independent today and their pronouncement on a “ rumble” from rear ish of car is not wheel bearing as I expected but out of true rim(s).

I sort of get that as you can feel it in front seats. Wheels were balanced recently and don’t look as though they have lost any weights.

Solution? Well I am not spending 1200 on two new VW rims inc fitting. In January I will have access to the rears on our uk golf but neither car has a jack. I have seen a set of alloys on eBay for 700 inc delivery. Swap two over and errr put them back on for say 300. Or live with it. I will have them balanced again just to rule that out first.

Pretty irritating as we are planning a 4000 mile trip in a few weeks.

If a rebalance doesn’t do the job, can you get rims “ machined “ back true in uk while you wait with car on bricks…..?
