General Car Chat / Re: Halfords oil deal - heads up
« on: 28 July 2013, 23:08:00 »
Just had a result on this, reserved online went to the store to collect. As usual with Halfrauds, the checkout girl looked my order number up, then went to the shelf to pick it out  ::)

Not enough there, so had to get some more from the back. Remind me again, the point in reserving if they just pick it off the shelf on arrival  ???

Anywho, got the deal price of £10 per 5L bottle, I then decided to flash my trade card. I was not expecting anything as it was already on offer, but got another £2 off!

So £38 for 4x 5L of 5w30 Fully Synth.

Not a bad deal that, on the drive back been trying to remember how much GM's 10/40 is on trade club, as I'm sure this works out quite a bit cheaper. Recall £48/50 all in last time I went to a dealer  :-\

At this price I'm considering going back for another 8 bottles this time, assume there is no harm in 5/30 Fully Synth in high miles 2.2 petrol?

Re-reading the above it looks to keep its "structure" longer, so in theory longer changes (not that I'll go on miles, more colour/feel)

Just one minor correction, the cans in the offer are 4L not 5L.  Or did you get an even better bargain?  Even at 4L the fully syns are an amazing deal for £10 esp if they're Mobil ;)

.... but what is the best sun screen for the windshield?   ...

I use one abroad in my windSCREEN!!!!!

Does everyone use bloody American terms for everything? You watch too much US telly!  :P :P :P :P :P
Apologies I should have said 'sun shield for the windscreen' not 'sun screen for the windshield'.  ;)

I take the points about them being a faff to put up, my £1 one is.  In fact this is why I posted - I want one that is more rigid and fits the area better and so will be much less faff.    So those that have good ones where did you get them?

They do definitely work, even the cheap ones.

Well at what point should I have posted that " I cirtainly wouldn't put that coma crap in my car, and I feel this stuff is similar quality" ...?
Because if I'd posted prior to this post, I would have been accused of some sort if snobbery, and after I'd be accused of being wise after the event.

But no, in any event, not for me. Thanks. :y

Seemingly Halfords/Comma oil is actually Esso. http://www.uk.commaoil.com/media/view/119 ;)

Really? You'll be telling us its mobil1 next. ;D

Many a true word . . . Esso = Exxon Mobil Corporation ;)
Personally I doubt the Halfords and Mobil 1 are the same oil (after all Mobil make different types) but I don't think there's any doubt they are made by the same mega oil corporation.  Although Esso/Mobil/Exxon/Comma undoubtedly make many different types of oil, it is often cheaper to mass produce one product and let the marketing departments stick different and fancy labels on it that impress those easily taken in.

Bit late now I know summer is ended  8) but what is the best sun screen for the windshield?  I bought one from the pound store which is Ok (considering the cost) but i'd like one that is larger, more rigid and fits the mig windscreen better.

Omega General Help / Re: Sticky Rev Counter
« on: 26 July 2013, 17:19:08 »
Just happened today on mine, first time I've seen it in 15 years with a mig.  Coincided with me changing the anti-freeze, lots of water around don't know if that was connected.

Hopefully it will go away, lots of these sort of things do.  Both my migs had a sticky bulb on the left of the instrument panel, a light whack on the plastic always lights it again.

Thought this was a "Socket Set" thread - how come its turned into yet another oil thread.  Someones single mindedness to the point of stubborness?

Definitely go for fully syn over semi if the price is the same or even close- no brainer.

One word of warning though some fully syn is ACEA C3 spec oil (eg dexos 2 spec).  ACEA say  "Warning: these oils have the lowest SAPS limits and are unsuitable for use in some engines. " I suspect C3 is aimed at diesel exhaust particulate filters and very modern cats.  I would worry about using it in the mig.  Quite a few fully syn oils are C3, especially the expensive ones.  I note the Halfords one isn't.

Thanks for heads up Kev, did you get 5w30?

Master recommended some fully synth for my 3.2, guess 5w30 is best? looks like a good deal!

Surprised to read this heresy on this forum! ;)

5W30 is fine despite what people say 8).  Personally I'd go for the 5W40 though, I think the 30 is just to save fuel not to save engines. £10 is a great price even though they are 4L cans.

And free delivery too.  Halfords seem to be having some sort of panick attack, what with that and fully syn 5w30 at £10
That oil is no good to anyone here, oh sigh.... ::)

Oh dear I must have a misprint on page 215 of my Vauxhall Omega owners manual

I'm sure there are a few. Does the manual mention that the auto box is a sealed for life unit? Or is that a dealer only gem? Or what about the original cam belt service interval of 80k miles that was reduced to 40k. Hmm?  Oh, check out the fuse box map as well, while your there.
If you think 20k oil change intervals are a good idea then, well, ... I'll let you "read up" on that one too. ::)
Bit strange my image seems to have gone missing, here it is again.  It shows a 5W30 oil is perfectly acceptable for the 2.6.  I don't know where all this other stuff about 20K, sealed unit, cam belt came from. I didn't raise it and none of it is in the owners manual I quoted from ???.

The problem you have is, you've been so deliberately argumentative on here since arrival, that none of the regular members here believe a single word you say. I personally don't believe for one minute your capable of listening to anything, but thats besides the point. That being, that there are far more respected members here who's opinions and advice are given based on hard, first hand experience.

That's not to say we shouldn't keep an open mind of course, but blindly taking the opposite view on any opinion offered is hardly going to convince anyone here based on that alone. The danger being less experienced members may be drawn in by your view.

IMO. That ain't on, Mr dbdb.
