General Car Chat / Re: Scrapping my estate, what to take off and keep

I'm keeping probably too many parts but I hate throwing away useful parts. :y
This part scares me, the last car I fully scrapped was a MK1 Granada 20 years ago and odd parts still keep cropping up  ;D

General Car Chat / Scrapping my estate, what to take off and keep
« on: 20 September 2010, 14:03:30 »
One week after recovery of my estate i've decided I want to reclaim the second spot on my driveway, god i'm impatient!

I'm now trying to build a list of spare parts to keep/ebay (this is not an advert mods!), what would you keep?

So far I have planned:

ABS ECU (already used!)
The month old struts/droplinks/handbrake shoes and cable
Cats
Headlights + level sensors
Plenum (can keep a clean one for easy swap outs!)
Headlight washers
Cam covers
Central locking solenoids
Window motors
Manifolds (I have a tick sound when cold)

Parts I think not worth keeping
Heads (must be warped the way it boiled)
Interior (basket case)
Bumpers/body panels (not bad nick but not in high demand, take too much space)

Anything else that might be useful?

I had a Janspeed SD1 many moons back, it was a lot lighter than normal due to parts rusting away :D

I think I only had it for 3 months before the gearbox let go big style, a lot of fun during that time though. It was sold on to a kit car guy as there was no way it would have passed an MOT without being re-shelled!

I suspect I know the answer but what would be the effect of fitting lowered springs but keeping the self levellers?

I'm not entirely sure what route to go yet as I have a pair of front B4's with 500 miles on them that I need to remove from my CDX before scrapping.

Also why do people rate the B4 so much, I just thought they were the straight replacement and the B6/B8 was the sports upgrade?

It would appear that they've done the locks as there wasn't the tell tale glass on the floor, unless theives now carry dustpans and brushes!!!!
Still they wouldn't have got too far as there wasn't much fuel in.
Hate to sound the profit of doom but round here we've had a few cases of older cars going walkies off driveways, coincidentally I had a guy ask me about my mig yesterday as I was working on it. I believe they look for cars on drives with expired tax discs and then come in with a spectacle lift, probably assuming that a lot of people won't bother reporting it as it's obviously broken etc.

Still trying to track this car down, still no luck yet.
I think the answer you might want is this http://www.gumtree.com/london/81/65749081.html it's in Colliers Wood but notice that the phone number ends 498 not 798 as on Autotrader, go go!

Shame, I'm not going all the way to Fulham to find out it is a munter.
As Dave said it has to be worth close to that as spare parts.

I can't remember the last time I had a stuck jubilee clip though, and the spring clips I took off today were just as embedded in the rubber.

Yesterday removal of the good ECU from the scrap car took 5 hrs, today replacement on my elite took the same again so definitely getting faster seeing as that involved putting the fiddly screws back in  :y

Unfortunately it's not fully rebuilt yet as I still need to get some PAS oil and refit the top radiator hose.

Talking of which up until today i've always removed and replaced those clips with a set of mole grips, that was until I met clipzilla that secures the pipe to the block. I managed to remove it using mole grips but when I went to replace it it had sprung shut to the max and I couldn't open the grips far enough to compress it. I attempted to compress it with water pump pliers but it launched itself into orbit and I decided that some things are just too dangerous to bodge  ;D

So, tomorrow i'm off for a walk(!) to get a set of proper pliers and some oil.

You just tilt it. Hardly any great secret!?
It's only a secret until you spot the indentations in the heads that it sits in between.
:y
I'm allowed grammar mistakes after spending as many hours as I did on the ABS today  :)

You forgot the obvious one...

...v6 owners should always carry a crank sensor in the boot ::)
I shouldn't say this...... in 8 years of ownership i've never had one go. There, doomed now  ;)

There is a nack to that one.  :y
Which I spotted reasonably quickly but even so it's a cozy fit  :)
