Cloning (or ringing as it was called in my day) isn't just about changing the engine & chassis numbers if you are doing the job properly.
Just about everything (interior, wiring loom, glass, etc) all end up relating back to the car in some small way. I will concede however that once the engine & chassis numbers are gone, then any further evidence (such as the wiring loom) becomes purely circumstantial.

Cloning and Ringing are 2 different acts of changing a cars identity
Cloning is a simpliar way and generally only requires you to change the number plates and move the car quickly
 
Ringing is where you buy a write off or damaged car and then steal a car that is the same model amd year as the 1 you,ve brought and you change the plates vin chassis numbers and sell it on

I was just thinking about average sytuation. Just normal driver (not race boy), regular service etc. I am particularly interested about auto gear box and rear diff. Are they able to survive 300k if maintained properly or is it just to much for them? Does it make any sense to buy 2001 omega with 240k on the clock?

ar 25 and ar 35 auto gearboxes should be good for 250 to 300k however some have failed at 70k it is all down to how well it was put together and how well its been maintained

Good going - I passed in 1980 at the age of 17

1974 for me......... on a Honda CB250 K4........

I took my test on a GP100, all we could afford as my parents didn't have a car at the time so bought a cheap bike which I was responisble for ALL running costs and I helped towards the money out of summer jobs.

Yes I did live miles from anywhere and my parents dumped the car to save money, mum had a C90 dad a GS850

You must have been a shadow of yourself then  

i passed my bike test at 17 on a rd125dxpre rdlc days never look back fastest things on the road bikes and you dont have to spend 100k to embarass car drivers
