FMDO: I sense some Socratic irony

My take - you probably can't achieve equality of outcome without taking away someone's opportunity.

The society that puts equality before freedom will end up with neither. The society that puts freedom before equality will end up with a great measure of both.

Its pure Socialism. If it were introduced in the U.S. it would be a very big signal that they have won, and Capitalism is on life support.

It's more like the traditional definition of liberalism. Please note the lower case l. But this is what happens when people use what used to be firmly defined terms as very loose insults. This is also true for right wing terms; Nazi and Fascist were two very different movements in two very different countries, yet they're thrown around as synonyms.

Let's not forget that much of the US Democratic Party would be considered true blue Conservatives(note the capital C) in this country.

Capitalism will be superseded, just like a long line of political theories that were once considered radical.

The state paying people wages as a step forward from having a welfare system to take care of those most in genuine need is not traditional liberalism. Its nothing short of Marxism. "From each according to their ability, to each according to their need".
The U.S. Democratic party was similar to our new very pale blue conservative party (note the lower case c) but not any more. In the last 10 to 15 years it has moved further and further to the left, and is now probably further left than the post Corbyn Labour party.
Capitalism cant really be superseded. Its as old as the first occasion one person had something another person wanted.
People who have thought themselves to be so clever that they could come up with a better system have come close to destroying civilisation, but people somehow still believe in it.
Thats why I finf it terrifying.

Heaven preserve us from the sincere reformer who knows what's good for you and, by heaven, he's going to make you do it whether you like it or not.

What a depressing world where people are given the means the feed their kids and they'd rather spend it on fags, booze and drugs.  :-\

Human nature can be  good and bad.

Some people will use the food box, or any food vouchers, for their intended purpose. :y

.......others will not. :(

^ This. Although not ideal, I'd sooner see the individual bear full responsibility to use/misuse a benefit, over private companies grifting profit to deliver less.

New or old, its terrifying prospect.  :o
Why? What difference would it make to you? Eh? Eh?  ;D

Its pure Socialism. If it were introduced in the U.S. it would be a very big signal that they have won, and Capitalism is on life support.
It has also been suggested in this country by the usual suspects, and if the yanks do it, we probably wouldnt be far behind.
Terrifying.

By no stretch of the imagination could Milton Friedman (UBI/negative income tax) be described as a socialist

In a sign of how things and attitudes in the US might change under Biden/Harris and a Democrat controlled Congress, the President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta Raphael Bostic has been talking today about a guaranteed Universal Basic Income.

He said " We need to continue the guaranteed universal basic income conversation "  " The guaranteed income is not a crazy conversation to have given the costs of poverty. "

I always thought this sort of talk was restricted to people like Corbyn, Sturgeon or the Scandinavians.  ::)  I never thought I'd hear such talk coming out of the USA!  :o

Trump-Pelosi is a two-way hatred I think.

At 78, Joe Biden will already be the oldest sitting president on taking office - older than Reagan was when he left. In that context, 2024 has to be a main consideration for both sides.

If you're suggesting that the left are not deranged... They would rather have the Senate waste their time Impeaching Trump for a day, on principle, than spend the time approving Biden's cabinet which needs to be confirmed and in place on the 20th.

That's derangement for you.

I'd think the main aim would be disqualification from any future federal office, rather than removal now.

(6 min) Usual annoying music but otherwise a worthwhile look at the 737 Max issue from 2019

DG please don't fall for the XRVision nonsense -

FWIW, I think the US (more than ever) needs a respectable and effective government opposition to be in place. Trump isn't it and the GOP needs to get itself sorted out very quickly.

And now the @realDonaldTrump twitter has gone west/south. So it must be over.

His best option at this point might be to resign, citing whatever reasons he wants. That way he can escape the Capitol problem and avoid the inauguration. With less than two weeks to go, what difference would it make.
