I've sorted the problem, I wanted to make sure it was the stat before going any further so whilst checking the top and bottom hoses for heat / flow etc I noticed the two front fans were turning, as I'd only just started the engine I thought this a bit strange, so after checking the wiring and plugs for 20 minutes for any signs of obvious faults and drawing a blank I sat in the car, 'pi**ed off and a fine set of brass boll**ks to boot', then I noticed the heater was on ! I turned the heater off so as to heat the engine up a bit quicker and the two fans went off, I switched the heater on again and the two fans came back on ! I then turned the heater to ECO and the fans went off again, I left the engine running, heater in ECO mode, and the temp gauge started to rise, I left it for a while and all the fans kicked in, this told me the thermostat must be working correctly, took the car for a run and now everything is working as it should be (obviously I hear you saying). So do I take it that below a certain outside temperature I should switch to ECO mode !!! This is all probably obvious to you but it never crossed my mind, I'm just glad it's sorted so long as I'm right about the ECO mode !
Thanks for your help guys, also managed to clean the pollen filter whilst I was messing around thanks to looking around the forum and threads.
Would appreciate confirmation on the ECO bit if anyone can help
