.. and we're talking about the little chip inside the key blade here. The remote for the door locks is separate.

Ken is correct. Car, transponder, Tech 2 and car pass need to be in one place for the union to happen. Not possible by post. :y

I always thought that damp air was better due to the water molecules expanding when the mixture ignites? And thus a bigger bang?

I would imagine there are beneficial effects, but, at the end of the day, the simplistic view is that, if you've got less oxygen going in (because the air is "diluted" with water vapour) there is less potential to burn fuel and therefore less power.

Water injection is used in some forced induction engines to keep the burning charge cool. It vapourises during the combustion process and takes heat out of the mixture, but also drops power a little. It does enable you to run more boost without blowing up the engine though.

Most of the references I've seen talk about aircraft piston engines and the need to derate them at higher humidity levels. We're only talking about 4% power loss at 100% RH relative to 0% RH so barely worth worrying about. If it was more of an issue more cars would sense the humidity of the intake charge and adjust fuelling and ignition as they do in response to intake air temperature changes.

Ive loaned my Silver MV6 (project EP4) to my old man after changing the front wheel bearings on Tuesday and he called me when he got home to say it drives lovely. I wonder what the chances are of me getting it back ::)

Every chance. Once the petrol light's flashing. ;D

Cool air is noticeably better due to the increase in density, hence more oxygen ingested into the engine and hence higher volume of fuel that can be burnt giving more power.

That's why it's vital not to be breathing under bonnet heat.

Not sure about humidity. Water vapour is fairly inert during combustion and adding anything inert to the air actually reduces power because it reduces the proportion of oxygen in the mix. It does act as an octane booster to a certain extent though. :-/

Booked in for 7am tomorrow for retest....

Blimey! My local MOT chap doesn't make it out of the greasy spoon before 9:30 :o

I like the 7am slot there - doesn't get in way of work.  And there is a nice lady who's bathroom overlooks the garage, and I don't think she realises that she hasn't much frosting on her windows  ::)

Don't forget the binoculars then. So, what's the excuse this time? Oops! Bulb gone. See you tomorrow morning for a retest - same time!

I'm sure there are peddlers of "snake oil" for automatic gearboxes just like everything else. AFAIK a decent ATF has everything an autobox needs. :-/

Problem is, people don't think through what's going on. To them it's "the button I press when it's getting a bit foggy". They don't consider that it's affecting the guy following them.

It's not the only area where if you fit too many safety devices you start causing accidents.

I have no problem with fog lights used in accordance with the highway code:

Quote
You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236).

The sad thing is, most motorists switch their fog lights on at the slightest hint of fog or rain, or even darkness, when vis. is still 1/2 a mile or more, and then leave them on. In this case they are counter productive, especially as they are normally now integrated into the light cluster with the brake lights rather than separated horizontally and vertically from them.

I use them on the occasions when it is so poor that I am worried about someone coming up behind me and not seeing my tail lights in time and I turn them off when someone is established behind me at a safe distance and speed, so they notice my brake lights. I certainly haven't used the rear fogs on the Omega since I've had it (a year) so this doesn't happen that often.

I don't see it as a problem to turn them on and off as required. We do the same with the main beams and indicators, after all.

To answer cem, our traffic lights are always active, day and night. I hate to think what would happen if they weren't. :o

V6 with hand controls! Sounds like fun....

I guess it could have been hacked about a bit to fit the controls but it's cheap.

Yep, you're right. That one slipped by me. He once said "I hate cars. If I ever get any powers again, I'd ban the lot."

I really weant to burn some rubber outside his house now!  >:(
