Years ago a mate of mine joined a classic car scheme for the same reason. For the annual cost he used to pay to run his Ford Escrot he joined the scheme which covers evertything except petrol. He doesn't need a car Mon-Fri and often not at weekends either. He gets a number of points per year which gets him use of cars in the collection.

So, when he occasionally needs a car for the weekend instead of getting the jump leads out and trying to start his 1992 1.4 Escort he phones up and squanders a few points on a Carrera RS .. or an E type. Pretty much everything available from ancient to modern, priceless to mundane. He was driving a nice 996 last time I saw him. When it spat out a load of smoke and engine oil in my face when I was following him, he just returned it with a note that it needs looking at! If points get a bit tight you can always have something less exotic.

Seemed a nice idea to me if you have to live in the smoke, especially as he doesn't need to pay out a fortune for a parking space now.

Are you talking about the fuel unions or the mountings for the filter?

I think my Laguna had pipes that looked like they had been heat-shrunk onto the unions but there was a plastic tab right up close to the filter that released them when you squeezed it hard.

Typical. Soon as I got in from work the doorbell went into meltdown. SWMBO gets home and I disappear to the garage. Not a peep. Still, lots of chocolates to polish off. :y

If I read that properly, you've had her quite a long time. She hasn't done too bad, thanks to you :y

Yes. Had it not been for you what life would she have had? Anyway, I hope this is just a passing rough patch.

Now, if they can develop a kit for an Omega that activates automatically at 69.998MPH I may be interested.

Get a manual.  Much easier and accepted....

That's OK. I've got a manual ;)

Just got to find an instructor who doesn't mind missing out on a few creature comforts. Like doors and a roof.

Oh, and how did we get from RoSPA to Road Kill again?

To try and drift the thread back on course, I've often wondered about studying for some sort of advanced driving qualification (don't laugh, those who have sampled my driving).

I have absolutely no idea where to start. I know there are various organisations (IAM, ROSPA, High Performance Club, etc.) who offer this type of training. Could someone in the know perhaps give a run-down of the pro's and cons?

If you hadn't topped him, he could have been an asset:

True. The one small flaw in the plan being I never did find his head, not that it would have been much use detached. I suspect it was above the top wishbone at impact, whereas his body was below it. At least it was quick.

Reminds me of the time I had to de-rabbit a driveshaft on a car I serviced...

Ahh, entrails wrapped round the propshaft is another delicacy. Happened to a mate of mine. We're not sure what it was - probably a squirrel, but boy, what a mess after it had been flailing round in the transmission tunnel :o

It was almost cooked upon removal, and plucked on one side, thanks to the brake disk.

It was him or me, unfortunately. 60MPH down a single track road and he just hopped out of the hedge a car length in front of me :o

I thought at the time that I didn't see him in the mirrors and maybe he'd jumped back in at the last minute. Imagine how popular I was when I rolled up at a nice hotel in Peebles 30 miles later with said stowaway and proceeded to shove it in a carrier bag and dump it in one of their bins.  ::)

Do they test you on "pheasant avoidance" and "hedgehog awareness" or do you lose marks for being an animal in charge of a car?

 :o

Oh, dear! That's me failed then. :'(

Shark attack. That's not the worst of it. You should see the wounds.  ;D

Just a view on the tax revenue....  If we purchased less fuel, then the to55ers Government would get less duty, however, we would still be buying the same amount but, from another source!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep. got to fund all their red tape some how. Road pricing would be fast tracked into existence and the number of speed cameras would rocket.

Problem is, they only have top come down a penny or two and everyone'll flock back.

As it is, those two have the highest prices around here anyway so I wouldn't fill up there unless I was on vapour in the first place.

Speaking of vapour, promoting LPG conversion en masse might be a better solution.

Fantastic to see it in the air again.

I was lucky enough to get an air-to-air view of one of the last Vulcans when I met it in a glider in '91 and it was truly awesome.
