Actually I know someone who is 19 and has a 2.5 CDX.  £850 is not as scary as I thought it would be for him.  :)

lawman (I remember you), welcome to the site. Omega owner or you not, you are equally welcome mate.  :D

The Corsa, its image aside, is a good small car and a wise choice. When time comes to sell, you will have no problems, especially at that spec level. Just avoid tacky add ons! ;)

And if you have any problems, let us know and we will try to help. :)

I am 22, got the Omega at 21. Facelift 2.2 CD - £450 Fully Comp 4 Years NCB (Its about £500 with the legal protection)

I find the Omega is fantastic, extremely smooth and refined. Yet quick (ish) when i want it to be.

From what I learnt on here, 2.0 / 2.2's are good, not lightning fast but no slouch either. They are also easier to maintain.

Get a V6 if you want pace, mpg is lower but only slightly. - A V6 would be steep on the insurance, maybe get a 2.0 for a while to get some NCB's  and then go for a V6.

Just finishing off upgrading the ICE in mine, adding a new Headunit & Active sub. I am no hooligan either just wanted a little more bass in the cabin and mp3 playback

have you checked the Oil level with the dipstick? The symptons sound like an oil overfill, or maybe an oil leak onto the exhaust.

Whats the condition of the coolant like?

I might use the RAC...

I did a quick data check, and its last owner change matchs what the owner says. He also says he has a cash recipt from the garage he bought it from.

unless you 'sell' the car you're interested in, do the hpi, then cancel auction.

But we possibly couldn't condone that... ;)

Nice idea!  ;)

Just did a basic data check on RAC, all checks out with what he said in terms of last ownership. He also says he has a cash recipt from were he bought it.

I contacted him this evening about viewing the car, no reply yet. But hopefully should get a responce tomorrow.

I was at my local 'back street' mechanics place today...owner showed me a bmw 3 series that he had on the lift.....
Apparently the owner/driver had done an emergency stop....then found he couldnt get any gear....recovered to garage.
Owner of garage showed me underneath that the engine and gearbox had moved nearly a foot forward of where it was suppose to be!!  :o he reckoned it was only a part of the subframe that stopped it from crushing the radiator....he pointed out every mounting point had been ripped off...also adding that he was surprised the engine and gearbox hadnt fallen off....at that point i decided maybe not good idea looking up at engine/geabox not being held in by anything  :o

It was 10years old....but vx's are better than that!!

crikey!  :o

Bah new cars generally are not all what they are cracked up to be, saw an '04 Plate A4 Estate on the motorway today, its exhaust mouting in the middle must have broke, the centre section of the exhaust was scrapping the ground.

water should be ok for that short distance, but change it once you get home rather than leave it standing dor days/weeks whilst you fix it...

Sounds good, seen a few examples on eBay which describe the "creamy" stuff under the oil filler cap, i assume its also a differnt colour to normal?

What is the replacement costs for a HG on a V6?

Also if the oil cooler is gone with the brown goo in the coolant tank, what if you did a coolant flush when picking up the car? Flush the system with a hose and put some fresh coolant in, i know it won't last very long.. but again maybe the 100 miles back home?

do you have to use propper coolant bottles (red or blue) or can you get away with just water?

Say on a 100 mile run back home after buying the car?

Clarification. :)

Head gasket failure. VERY rare on the V6. If it does happpen, it is most likely down to using pure water in the cooling system for a damn long time and driving the car very hard.
As Mark says. Remove cap to depressurise system and you can drive a suprisingly long way (gently!) Water mixes with oil causing creamy mayo in filler cap AND on the dipstick.
Lubriaction properties of the oil are compromised, but not a concern unless driving long distances!

Oil cooler failure. Much more common, especially on pre 1998 cars. Post 1998 had a much better stainless steel cooler.
When this goes, the coolant rapidly turn from water, to brown goo, which block the radiator and the coolant pipes, resulting in a car that overheats quickly...and will cause HG failure if driven for any length of time that way!  ;)

Bear this in mind when considering...

To Clarify again..

So if the HG has gone you can drive it from the seller back home, just add lots of coolant?

But if its the Oil Cooler which has gone, which is going to be much more likely the coolant tank will be full of brown goo, being to thick to cool the   engine, and cannot be driven very far?

I have seen some cars which are about 150 miles away from me with a HG failier (prob oil cooler from description) have it low-loaded here would be very expensive  :(
