Omega General Help / Cambelt change in 2.2
« on: 10 September 2009, 12:56:39 »
I have looked around here for a maintenance guide for changing the cambelt on a 4-cylinder 2.2 Ecotec but haven't found any. The car is a Facelift 2001 Omega.

Can someone point me to a link where that might be found.

If not is there anything special to consider? I have heard about some kind of jig to lock the camsprockets from rotating for the V6's, is that needed for the 2.2 as well?

Thankful for nay hints.

Omega General Help / Re: Xenon Bulbs & Europe
« on: 07 September 2009, 14:10:50 »
I did change my Xenon bulbs with a cheap brand (about half price of Osram). They burned out within a year.  :'(

So I did bite the bullet and got the expensive Osram brand.

Omega General Help / Instrument panel printed circuit board?
« on: 17 August 2009, 16:23:18 »
On my 2001 omega the printed circuitboard on the backside of the intstrument panel has been damaged. I had it removed a while ago and the circuits for the battery lamp is broken.

I wonder if the printed circuitboard/foil is available as a sparepart. It looks like it is replaceable.

Thanks

UPDATE:

I got a new (rebuilt) alternator since the old one was only three months old.

Put it in and everything works as normal.

Sorry for my stubbornes with this but the chain of events made me doubtfull.

Thanks for all advices. This is a great place for us DIY Omegaowners.

If in any doubt put a voltmeter accross the battery, any more than about 14.5volts max is overcharging.

You can try turning on all electrical devices, heated seats heated rear window headlights etc. to try to use the excess power but ultimatly I suspect the others are very correct that the alternator is broken.

Yes it is overcharging with about 16-18 Volts but only after the aforementioned gearchange clonk. So why is this triggered, it seem sto me that the gearbox is the one that sets the alternator to overcharge.

The order of events are
1 gearbox clonk  when shifting to 2nd
2 limpmode
3 overcharge

This makes me doubtful that the alternator is faulty. I suspect that something triggers the alternator to overcharge.

Thanks

Well,

To be more clear, it seems like the high voltage comes after the gearbox problem.

The first thing that happens is that it will shift to second with a clonk noise then it goes in to limp mode. After that the highvoltage shows.

But I will check the alternator and see if it is faulty.

Thanks

OK, but what is the relation between the gearbox and the alternator when this happen.

When it misses the shift from 1st to 2nd the electrical problem shows and stays as long as the gearbox is misbehaving.

Thanks

Alternator fault and the gearbox is tripping as a result.

The solenoid is not able to increase the alternator voltage.

Are you saying that the alternator causes the gearbox to miss the shift?

Is it a high load on the electrical system at that point. I imagine that the solenoid will draw a lot of juice when doing the shift.

Can you elaborate on your opinion?

I did change the alternator just a few months ago. It was a rebuilt one. And I could need some arguments if I need to replace the recently changed one.

Thanks

Omega General Help / Autobox shifting problem (electrical)
« on: 12 May 2009, 10:36:44 »
On my 2001 2.2L Omega I have got a problem with my automatic gearbox.

When it gets warm, after about ten minutes of driving, it stops shifting. From a standing still it hesitates when shifting from 1st to 2nd and after that it goes in to emergency mode and is locked in 3rd gear.

When the car is cooled down it works normally again until it gets warm.

At the same time something goes wrong in the electrical system. ABS and Airbag warning lights come on and all instruments dies. In idle they go back to normal and after a while they stop acting up and works noraml. After a 100 km drive in this condition I discovered that my battery was cooked after getting 18V for a long time.

Now I just did a test and when the gearbox acts up the system voltage goes up to 18V. Unfortunenatelly it fried my diagnosticbox :'(.

So my suspicion is that the solenoid for 1st to 2nd in the gearbox is shortening and creating this electrical problem.

It is time to change the fluid in the box. I will do that next but will that solve the solenoid problem? (I hope it will )

Thanks

DO THE JUMP-LEAD TEST FIRST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
as per my earlier post - trust me on this!
A mere half amp output from the alternator will knock out the 'charge' light - it's not really a true indication in this instance.

Yes, I will do that first  :-[

I had exactly the same symptoms on the QX ---- turned out the alternator was fried!!!   Indeed when we popped on a power pack and started her the alternator burst into flames!  Prior to this runnimg normally with no symtoms of low charge, no warning lights etc  :-?

I have a suspicion towards that direction. When I drove away from home, when the car was cold there was a small rattling noise, like when you don't have any oilpressure. It went away after 15 seconds. It was related to the engine speed. My first thought when thhis happened was that maybe the alternator had gone.

Strange though that the batterylight has never come on.

I'll dismount the alternator tomorrow and have it checked.

Thanks

Are you able to clear all the codes, then see whats left?  Some (eg voltage low) are likely a result of the battery, so would be nice to know whats actually current

Those codes are just after a clear.

I guess some of them are just a consequence of something else.

The odd thing about the low voltage is that it just five minutes earlier started without any problems, no hint of low battery.
And when we hooked it up with cables to another car it ran the starter as normal, but it was dead as a rock and didn't even try to fire.

Thanks

Omega General Help / My Omega just died on me - HELP
« on: 22 February 2009, 12:32:05 »
Yesterday I was out driving, everything was normal, except that my EML has been on for a while, it has an error of P1555 that I was going to fix this week.

Anyway car is OK, stop for a visit in a shop. Car starts OK and we go on to the gasstation. On the way in to the station some lights on the display lights up, the Airbag and the brakewarning lights dimly. I shut down at the pump and fill her up.

Then it wouldn't start, it is like that the battery is low. Just suddenly!

Get another guy to hook up battery cables and it spins the crank OK but is totally dead. We had to tow it back home.

I have now checked the trouble codes and get a long list.

P0301-002  Coil 1 don't fire

P1555-000  TPS Signal is implauseible with engine load

P0170-002  Fuel Trim system lean

P0130-002  O2 sensor 1 low voltage

P0560-002  System voltage too low

P1600-000  Program/replace controller

P1612-000  Anti-Theft lock no or wrong signal

P1613-000  Anti-Theft lock no or wrong signal

Quite some troubles  >:(

Is my ECU toasted or what?

It is clearly some electrical problem. Some stuff seems to work but others behave like it has a dead battery. BTW the battery was replaced two years ago and signals good.

I am in need of some good advice to go on with this.

Thanks

Omega General Help / Re: Fault code
« on: 12 February 2009, 20:21:05 »
I have a vacuumproblem and I believe this is related.

The ECU calculates the engine load from the MAP reading and the MAF reading and the electronic throttle is adjusted to balance the air/fuel to the load.

If there is a vacuumleak the MAP reading gets screwed and the calculation is faulty.
