This makes sobering reading and is documented on the invoice as a 'small service' to include a complimentary visual health check.

That to help soften the blow of the bill  :-\
Although 180 notes is nothing to some but if you dont know anyone who can help out with diy servicing they have no choice  :(

The complimentary visual health check takes the form of a 'spotty yoof' leaning against the car for ten minutes whilst scratching his balls. He then puts a tick in the appropriate box. Job done.

£180 for an oil change simply can't be justified.

Outrageous cost. But then again that's standard dealer stuff.

I bet it would be a similar cost if I took 3.2 to a dealer, I'd save £150 doing DIY change on the 3.2, that's a shit load of fuel. Give it's current miles, that's about 2 months worth of fuel!

Sobering thoughts, as any replacement motor for me would likely mean no more DIY.

How come? Other than the Dervs produced in the last couple of years, cars haven't gotten soo much more complicated have they?

Leaving the engine aside, surely there's 15 years' wear on the Autobox as well. I can't think that the changes will be as quick as the day she rolled off the production line, nor that the torque converter is 100% of its former self?

These could account for (at least some of) your lost pace?

Never waxed a car before? Are you crazy? :D what do you do while the wife is watching endless soaps?

Ha! I suppose I've never owned a car I thought worth waxing  :-X. I'll tend to put them through the Hot Wax car wash every so often. At the moment the CDX is doing double duty as Executive Transport Solution and Skip, so not much call to keep her spotless.

As for my time, my wife and I are completely renovating our house at the moment, so that keeps me busy enough (and penniless).  ;D

As someone who's never (ever) polished a car, I'm not really qualified to answer this, however I think its just a question of how big your budget is. I know that Dodo Juice and Poorboys brands seem to get a lot of airtime on detailing forums etc.

If it were me - well I wouldn't be buying any as I don't wax my car, but hypothetically if it were me, I'd read some reviews, decide on a budget and just buy what's best at that price point. At a guess though, I'd say refining your technique and putting the time & hard work will be more important than the brand you choose.  8)

Don't forget to print off your paper counterpart code from DVLA, as many hire companies will need this code.
Those are no longer valid. I thought you needed a code from the DVLA website? (Which lasts for three days) I've heard of them asking for National Insurance numbers, PLEASE DO NOT give them that, they don't need it. Although isn't ROI covered by your normal UK License anyway?

Personally, I'd ask the rental company and get it prepared before. The damage waver is up to you, ask what the excess is, but also consider a supermarket dink will be your fault, again I've always took it and never needed it.

EDIT
Opps TB has covered that, I misread it  :y
To generate the code (valid for 3 weeks IIRC) you need driving licence number and NI number.

The hire company need licence number and code.

Its possible this is where some confusion arises, or that maybe people of turned up without it, and the hire company have helpfully produced the code there and then.

There are 2 ways to do this, both involve going online to DVLA website. You can either generate a One Time Code which is only valid for 72hrs but doesn't require you to print anything. Just make a note of this code and give it to the hire person when you collect the car. Alternatively you can print off a Licence Summary which is valid for 30 days, however you must print this and hand it over at the time of your hire.

So far our team at work has managed to hire cars in France, Spain, Germany and the USA without being asked for either of the above. Seems like the message hasn't filtered through yet about the changes.

The hire companies can generate the code for you on the spot but I suspect they don't like doing it as it takes time & effort. They will also probably start charging an admin fee in the future!

Love these, although I actually prefer the exterior look of the (slightly) later 240, the 3.8 makes a lovely noise though!

The car looks a nice one, although for me, I'd prefer wire wheels and a colour other than "prosthetic limb beige" :P

Car stalled immediately when I tried to move off with heaters on full from cold. Obviously it's trying to switch in too early as it's fine on petrol.

This would seem to support the idea that the problem lies with how the heater pipes have been connected rather than your injectors. I would guess the "intermittent switching back" could be down to when the thermostat opens and closes. Could be wrong though.

There are some VERY detailed guides on LPG installation in the Maintenance Guides section. I would have a look through those for how the hot water pipes should be connected. If yours don't match I would suggest you change them so they do  ;). It might also be with checking the exact spec of the kit you have. Ie what injectors, vaporiser etc. If they are "on the edge" in terms of their BHP capacity vs the BHP of the car, that also won't help.

These may be more easily accessible and they've worked on everything I've ever tried them on (including silicone sealant)!

Only sat in one once (in a shopping centre) and never driven it but the interior felt very rover - ie horrible, plastic and liable to drop to pieces in 5,000 miles or less.

Just my opinion though  ;D

Ahhh... OK, yeah, I hadn't spotted the "coin holder" part - given that I can't get any coins to slot in! The business card thingy is usefult though. Thanks :).

In answer to the original question, never used the coin holder (change lives in the poxy little cubbyhole under the centre armrest thingy) but the main part fits my sat nav in perfectly  :y

On the panda theme, Mrs 944 used to have a picanto. Great little car, 45-50mpg and dead easy to work on with surprisingly cheap bits
