Omega General Help / Re: Knock from steering
« on: 19 July 2013, 07:55:50 »
Have you recently changed front wheels or had new tyres fitted? I had such a fault caused by a balance weight hitting the brake caliper on full lock.

Omega General Help / Re: Bottom arm a pig to fit

I assume you took the track rod off the hub. It sounds like you have done one side. I always have the wife lever the new wishbone down to get the wishbone taper pin into the hub, using a long lever through the hole in the wishbone. You will have noted that there is a 'waist' in the taper pin to accept pinch bolt. Do not torque up the front bolt until the car is back on its wheels and loaded normally - wife in driver's seat.

Yes, tie the hub out of the way. Then insert the wishbone as near horizontal as possible. Then crawl underneath and look up through the hole to see which way it needs to go, put a screwdriver through the hole to align the holes, then drop the bolt through.Hopefully it will peep through the bottom. Then you can turn it clockwise and it will screw itself through.

Good luck!

Omega General Help / Re: Strange Aircon Problem
« on: 17 July 2013, 12:06:47 »
Fascinating thread. I have a 2.5 doing exactly what VXL V6 describes. I imagined it was the way old cars go. Silly me. I also have concluded that once aircon fails, regassing does not last very long, anyway it never gets very warm here, does it, so it does not matter.

Now I learn it could be a fault that could be rectified! A few questions.
Should the metal pipes at the front of the engine be hot or cold?
Where is the vacuum to the HBV switched? I am now looking at a 2.2; vacuum seems to come up from inlet manifold to brake servo, with a side branch to HBV.

Sorry to be so naive. If there is a maintenance guide please point me to it.

Omega General Help / Re: crank case or rocker
« on: 17 July 2013, 10:25:52 »
Rocker cover gasket most likely, and the cause will be blocked breathers. Check which side it is, driver's side much easier to change than passenger's side, due to wiring loom complications. Use genuine Vx parts and sealant. Don't forget the O rings.

Omega General Help / Re: abs problem
« on: 15 July 2013, 22:09:20 »
Ecu aside, I thought the abs system was almost bomb proof on omegas. :-\

Unless its been damaged....?
Not bomb proof. I have has four failures. Two were ECU, one was moving eluctor ring, and one is still not resolved.

Y188NFA petrol 2.2 saloon manual
My son Ben's car. In June EML (engine block, not spanner) was on, so I investigated. Found oil in plug holes, so changed cam cover gasket, cleaned breathers, cleaned coil pack, changed plugs. Light remained on. MOT chum put on his Snap On tester, it said cam sensor. He switched off EML light. It then passed MOT. Then EML came on again, so I changed cam sensor for genuine VX part, but 'special price' as it had been put on another car first. Fault still present. Son complains that now first thing in the morning car starts, but power very low until it warms up. After that it is fine all day.

Any ideas?

My son Ben's car. Recently passed MOT,  engine light had been on, MOT man put his tester on it, it said cam sensor, he switched it off. Light came back on again. I bought genuine Vx cam sensor from Bellinger Grove, storeman said special price because it has been put on another car then removed again. Part no. 90520850. Son now complains car worse than before, starts from cold, will give little power, when warm it is fine. After six hours parked it starts fine and runs well straight away, and goes on doing so.

In June I changed cam cover gaskets (oli in plug holes), cleaned breathers, changed plugs. Did not change coil pack.

Coil pack? Crank sensor?

Please advise.

The cam belt cover on my 2000 2.5 petrol estate is broken. I have a spare cam belt cover from a 1999 3 litre saloon. Will it fit?l

Omega General Help / Re: high clutch pedal.
« on: 14 July 2013, 17:16:22 »
Thanks Al :y if I pull away hard which is rare for me, it appears to slip in second  briefly, but again could be my big long legs ;D not letting the pedal up quick enough

Mine does that occasionally as well ::) I put it down to all the oil pouring out of the rear crank seal ;D

Seriously though, original factory clutch should last 140+k, unless it's an ex traffic car. The one I recently sold got through four clutches in just over 100k :-X

If it slips dropping to fourth to briskly overtake on a motorway then I would suggest ordering the parts ready :y
Was that ex-police car an Abingdon Thames valley car by any chance? I have one of those, also having got through four clutches in 100K miles. I have had other ex-police cars  on their first clutches. I reckon there is a man at Abingdon who rides the clutch.

Thanks for help, Johnny and Chris. I finally got the bottom bolt in, working from below, by propping the starter in with a piece of timber and turning it round poking an allen key through the bottom hole in the starter until I located the thread in the flywheel housing. Then I screwed in bottom bolt, then top bolt went straight in.

I found it a difficult job. I take off my hat to Johnny, doing it in half an hour.

4452
I did it from below Terry, took half an hour only.  :y  one jack and one axle stand I used there, the stand to the chassis and the jack to the engine, remove the coolant bottle having a bit more place to work easily and come on! I was removing the engine mount then the starter. A little bit I had to lift on the engine when removing the mount but was no more disturbing circumstance. Good luck !  :y
Well done! I have changed four starters on 2 litre Omegas, but I could see what I was doing then. This job seems to be all done by touch.

Which bolt did you put in first, top or bottom?

Laszlo

I am following GastronomicKleptomaniac's excellent maintenance guide. Fitting new starter, he says 'Wiggle the starter into place, refit top bolt by a few threads' and here I am stuck. I am working from above, I seem to be able to get the starter into place, though it is able to rotate about 60 degrees, then I strive to fit the top bolt. It is difficult to locate the point where the hole is aligned with the thread, and impossible to turn the bolt when i think it is in the right place.

What am I doing wrong?

Yesterday my trusty Peugeot Expert passed its MOT ;) with 1 advisory. slight leak on Ns outer Cv  boot. I duly booked it in to a local small garage, who specialises in clutches + brakes, this is not a Mr Clutch guys,he a decent bloke. He has quoted me £300 for P Plate Clutch + R Bearing,he aware the mig has Dmf, says if thats shot looking at another same as above :o. First ? should i fit Vx parts and do think its a bit steep :y
Cheers John
Sounds cheap to me. I thought clutches changed at garages were £750, more than any of my cars is worth. I had a Peugeot 505 estate in 1979 and a mobile mechanic would change me a clutch for £80 in my garage. But on Senators/Omegas garages quote £750.

check fuses under bonnet :y
Thanks Symes. All fuses OK. What a lot there are!.
