Omega General Help / Re: Engine vibration, timing?

How "exact" must the timing be? I wonder this because I have noticed that my engine vibrates slighlty on idle and can not remember if it did that before the cambelt job. How much will it effect the idle if timing was, let's say, less than a quarter of a tooth out on one side? Mine runs nicely though, fuel economy is ok, pulls very nice and smooth, only this vibration on idle...which could be a dozen other things also.

Could be the idle control valve. I had this once and Mark DTM kindly showed me how to clean it out.

That makes a lot of sense when you think about it! That would make a good How To article.

Thanks everyone!

I'll do lots of flushing over the weekend. The water was always clear prior to the oil cooler failure so I'm pretty sure there's nothing nasty hiding in the radiator ;D I did not realise how much flushing it would take. It's payday next week so I might do the cambelt and water pump then as that should let a lot of water out. I've never managed to get more than around 3 literes of antifreeze/water in it so I guessed the engine retains a lot of water. Plus the front of the car is always higher than the back due to the slope on my drive!

Thanks guys, will give it some good flushes. At least it sounds like nothing too bad.  :)

Thanks guys. It was a new genuine VX oil cooler. I used the Holts Speedflush, but I did only flush it once so I'll give it a good flushing again.  :y

Omega General Help / What can cause oil in water?
« on: 01 May 2011, 07:42:07 »
A few months ago I had oil in the water caused by the oil cooler. I replaced the oil cooler but noticed a few weeks ago that I am still getting lots of oil in the water.

On checking I noticed some fresh oil around the middle left hand bolt of the oil cooler cover and some traces of oil around the oil cooler cover nut. I replaced the oil seal washers again - the new oil cooler did not seem to be leaking and I flushed the cooling system, but I'm still getting oil in the water.

The only other reason I know of for this is the head gasket but I don't think it is this because the enginge runs very smoothly. Any ideas how i can diagnode the fault?

Omega General Help / Re: Ingnition switch key getting stuck
« on: 05 May 2011, 22:08:05 »
I get this problem from time to time - it happens when I don't have the brake pedal pressed firmly when I turn the ignition key to off and the lever on the gear selector has not seated correctly. What I do then is turn the igntion back to on, pull the gear lever up a couple of times until it clicks down fully. Then I can turn off and remove the key. HTH

Omega General Help / Re: Really strong petrol smell

Thanks very much Mark. I had a look today and yes, fuel was gushing out of the bleed value. I tried tightening it but that did not help so no have a second hand fuel rail to fit over the weekend :)

Chris

Pop the plenum off and the lid off the fuel pump relay.

Press the relay manualy and observe the fuel rail etc for signs of leaks.

Also check the plate on the top of the fuel tank (can be seen through teh inspection plate in the boot)

Thanks Mark, that's great, I'll do that at the weekend and report back.  :y

Omega General Help / Really strong petrol smell
« on: 02 May 2011, 22:50:23 »
Hi, I've got a really strong smell of petrol. It's quite bad when starting and then it seems to go away, but when I park up after driving for a while with the engine off it is very strong. It's so bad that one shop employee called the police in fear that it was leaking petrol, and the MOT tester today spent 10 minutes looking for a leak before he would being testing.

I've stripped down the inlet manifold a couple of times and replaced all of the rubber seals. I thought the smell had gone after that, but my sense of smell is not very good and it obviously has not gone. There is no petrol leaking on to the floor. There are two "possible" causes but I don't see how they could cause such a strong smell:-

1) The fuel bleed valve on the fuel rail seemed to be leaking slightly - also there seems to be no pressure when I bleed it - also co-incides with bad starting from cold. However the bleed valve has a cap so it can't be leaking enough to cause such a strong smell.

2) The top left bolt of the inlet manifold flange is spinning and will not tighten. Given that there are quite a lot of bolts on the flange I didn't think that just one bolt would allow petrol to leak though, plus when the engine is running it would create a vaccuum sucking the petrol in.

Grateful for any suggestions :( Btw, failed the MOT - indicator bulbs the wrong colur!??? It's all bog standard :-?

I do remember reading on here that there is a route from the sun roof drain into the passenger compartment...

Don't forget to get a new rubber seal - the one that goes between the engine block and the transfer pipe! :y

Well the obvious answer would be to get it from Vauxhall - am I missing something? If you PM me your reg or VIN number I can get you the part number from the EPC..

Moggy, I'm just about to fit a new HBV as a preventative measure and so will have the old one from my car which should be OK at least for a while so at least you won't have to spend any money. I can come over to Birmingham this Sunday morning and fit it for you if that's any good?... I don't charge but I wouldn't refuse lunch  :y
