Omega General Help / Re: Viscous Fan
« on: 22 September 2009, 14:55:39 »
After viewing many Viscous fan threads - I don't think anyone is able to say conclusively whether it is OK to remove it or not. We have people whose cars depend on them (as above) and others (mine, Ex-TB's) whose will run happily without them.

If your car runs hot then you need to use it, if your car runs cold (as mine used to) then it can be ditched quite happily. It seems that the deciding factor in all cars is related to past cooling system and engine servicing. This can usually be rectified through a period of "over-servicing", but is not always effective :y

Whilst the viscous was off, I gently warmed the hub radially, to see if it'll now 'kick in' as the temp rises.
I still don't fully understand what you mean by kicking in? The fan is always spinning in my experience - I don't see how its behaviour is altered by engine temperature? (I might well have got this around my neck  :-/)

Hi Pete,

Are you sure the ring is seated correctly? If it is not then it will cause a weep. Did you use a genuine kit and replace the seal?

Omega General Help / Re: Need something clarifying Chip Upgrade
« on: 01 September 2009, 13:43:20 »
If I was you I would just whack it in and give it a shot. The first chip I got from Terry was the wrong one - when I put it in the ECU the car was idling at 2500rpm!

Got hold of a new on and shoved it in - worked a treat.  :y

What the chuff is a "ESD wrist strap" anyway?  :-/

The 2.5TD isn't mega fast by any means, but you should feel a slight surge at about 1500rpm ish, followed by whistling if you have the window down. If there is no surge and no power could be a turbo related problem - maybe sticking wastegate?

surely that would just be a big smoke cloud....???
You will have enough smoke out of her when you get it chipped!

Chipping is the best thing to do to start with. If you want to go further you could look down upping the boost slightly and other little bits, but nothing will make a difference like the chip does - it is excellent  :y

Hi Bruce, it the TD a manual? If so there is an option to chip the ECU giving you more power and hence more economy  - but his will only work on a manual as the Auto box is too weedy (unless you fancy changing the Auto box to a stronger version - which is an option)

I had my manual TD chipped about 18 months ago and it makes a massive difference. MPG up from about 30 to over 40 and the extra 40/50 bhp helps too!

The dreaded '64' .............

As an aside, I've come across several tractors that are running superbly with '64' apparent.

I think the code 64 was once a sign of impending doom, but it has been showing on my car for about 2 years and I have never managed to clear it... Cars runs sweet as though  :-/

Wouldn't worry  about it too much as long as the motor is serviced and looked after - which it sounds like it is  :y

Hi Ali,

I am in Milton, so just down the road! To fix the problem, I did the following:

Remove undertray
Jack up car onto axle stands
Jack up engine on LHS and remove mounting from its position.
Rag the mounting with a hammer until it was back in shape (may or may not be necessary)
Find some new bolts and bolt the mounting back on with plenty of thread lock.
Bobs your Uncle

Not a terrible job, but a bit fiddly.  :y

might be worth checking the engine mounts too :y

This man has hit the nail on the head  :y

Happened to mine last year, grinding when turning right and when reversing. Engine will have dropped on the nearside. See pictures below which should show the problem I came across:

See how close the pulley was...

This could have had something to do with it... 1 bolt missing and 1 finger tight.

All I did was remove the mounting and thrash the bracket back into shae and bolt up again with thread lock. Since doing this though, one of the bolts has sheared, but it is still staying tight.

PS - You're local, so if you need a hand with anything, let me know.

Omega General Help / Re: how do i remove 2.5td lift pump
« on: 04 August 2009, 13:34:12 »
Hi Spikerz,

I had the same problem with my TD about 2 years ago when the car would struggle to start when the fuel was low, so to combat this I always kept the tank half full until I got around to pulling the pump out. I managed to clean mine and get it running again - until last week....

Down to about 10l of fuel and the car cut out on me! Started and ran, then cut out again - kept doing this at random intervals. Put some fuel in and all was well again. Pulled the pump out last week and it was dead. Andy at Vx quoted about £95+ for the pump, the part number on the pump is old so he will have to look it up manually for you.

I managed to get one of ebay this weekend for £25  :y

I thought mine was dirty! That is unreal - will go much better with all that cr*p out of there.  :y

EDIT: It might be worth asking Jimbob nicely if he can graft those pictures into the Maintenence Guide (which will be updated soon as I am having to replace my pump tomorrow night  :-[)

You will be able to get most of the bottle of DM into the filter - you might have a drop left to sling in the tank.

Hold it at about 1500rpm for a couple of minutes though - then take it for a spin.

I was under the impression that blanking the EGR made the economy worse? I thought it was something to do to increase power?

I could well be wrong though!
