Omega General Help / Re: EMERGENCY - CAR WONT START
« on: 30 September 2008, 20:24:40 »
Hi everyone,

Just got in from today's escapades.  Unfortunatly i was forced to leave the car at work.

Anyhow my dad turned up in the end and we tried to start it again but with jump leads connected to his car and still it would not start.  I swapped out the fuel pump (in a record 10 mins) and still no go.

SP_32 (Steve) dropped me a line and we chatted about what else it could be and the best thing we could think of was a faulty crank sensor, so maybe this is the best (only) next step.

I'm pretty sure the LPG ECU wiring is ok as once the car is running it runs very well and has not caused any issues.  If the LPG wiring to the injectors were to be below standard i would have thought it would affect the car during normal driving.

One thing that really confuses the hell out of me is that for 10 or so failed start i managed to get her started my shorting out the fuel pump relay, but maybe this is a red herring?

Thanks so much for your supoprt Steve  :y

Thats it, cover off and o9ld pump was quite clean.  Put new one back in and still wont start.  So that's £47 down the swannie  :'(

Now stuck for ideas.

I think it's the pump but i have never experienced such a problem before.  If teh fuel normally runs at 3bar for example, would 2 or 1 bar be such a problem?  I didn't realise how important fuel pressure was until now...

I have a replacement pump in the boot ready to fit but can't shift the tank cover, no matter how hard i try.

Full battery and turns just fine.  I have had a long standing issue with this car and i came very close to fitting a new fuel pump yesterday.  I have a spare pump in the boot ready but i cant get the tank cover to move, it's jammed solid.

I'm pretty sure its the pump but wont know for sure until it's replaced.

There is fuel pressure but i get hte feeling the pressure isn't enough, hence i thought if the fuel pump.  This occured a while back and if i shorted the pump relay out the car started ok, this managed to get the car started 10-15 times.

Do you have a computer cable for the LPG system?  with this you can check for errors.  My LPG system had a failed temp sensor and the ECU flagged it a an error.

Also with this cable you can check the LPG pressure.  I checked mine a few weeks back when i had the same problem and the problem was a faulty Emmegas regulator/evaporator.  The Emmegas regulators are crap and the presure adjustment screws cease.  I ended up buying another one and this fixed the problem forst time.

I also replaced the copper fuel line for some nice plastic hose which was nice  :)  I don't think this had anything to do with my original problem though.

Have you done a paperclip test to see if any error codes are stored in ECU?

Omega General Help / Re: Central locking problem
« on: 30 September 2008, 22:26:25 »
I had issues with my W plate a while back.  Turned out to be a tired locking solenoid and then a tired battery.  I got the feeling the weak battery was highlighting the tired solenoid, but £5 for a solenoid from a scrap yard wasn't too bad.

NOTE - facelift locking solenoids are different to pre-facelift.  The connectors are round on the pre-facelift ones and square on the later ones.  Why they changed them??? beats the hell out of me!

Cheers

Hi Matchless,

I loosened the feed union and fuel quite a bit of fuel dribbled out.  I also put a bit of hose from the return union and ran the fuel pump and fuel was pumped into a fuel can, although not as much as was going in.

The thing that has me confused is that for the past 10 or so failed start i can run the fuel pump manually (by shorting the relay out) and the car starts. It points to a pump that's not building up the pressure.

Is it worth replacing the crank sensor as a matter of standard procedure?

Vauxhall fuel pump on TC is £126.90 and megaVaux charge £47.  so a fuel pump might be an expensive 'educated' guess?

Cheers
Marc

Incidentally, I took the fuel filter off today and switched the pump on and clean petrol was running freely.  I also took the fuel inlet pipe at the engine and pumped fuel into a pint glass and again this was running freely.  I also put a piece of hose pipe from the fuel return on the fuel rail and pumped into a pint glass, this did fill the glass but the fuel flow rate was much lower, not too sure if this was ok?

Omega General Help / Fuel Pump failure.

Hi Peeps,

Not too sure if anyone on OOF knows much about the fuel pump in an Omeaga, but i think mine has thrown it's cards in as it’s not building up enough pressure...  I stared another thread about this a while back (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1221508779/27#27) and i thought the problem had faded away, well until my fuel gauge read less that 80 miles and then the starting issue returned.  Maybe it’s having a hard time pumping the dirty fuel from the bottom of the tank?

I managed to get around this so far by shorting the fuel pump relay out so as to give the pump all the current from the battery before starting her, this seemed to work every time which was reinforcing Kev’s theory that the pump was starting to fail.  But now this trick fails to work, no matter how many times i start the pump before cranking the car wont start.  I think the pump is failing to get the petrol in the fuel rail up to 3 bar.

I tried to take the fuel pump cover off today to check the pump but the dam thing wont shift.  >:(  I tried whacking the plastic ridges with a piece of wood and a mallet and it refused to shift.

I think i may cut my losses and but a new pump from the stealers tomorrow and replace in the evening, no matter how tight the pump cover is, I’ll have to get it removed!

Does anyone have any thoughts on the GM fuel pump, do they fail in such a way?  Do they just die and fail to pump or do they loose their grunt and fail to pressurise the fuel rail

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

IKWYM - I know what you mean about putting off fueling up with petrol  :-[ very shameful

No issues while running, none at all.

Just popped outside and the car and it will not start, just cranking over.  I then shorted the relay out and cranked the car at the same time and cough cough it fired up.  I then opened up the shorted wire over the relay and stays running ok.

By pre-pumping the fuel it seems to fix my problem.  :y

When i open the tank over the weekend i expect to see some dirt around the pickup, well hopefully.

Kev,

I didn’t have an error code...? and no EML lit.

I’m thinking the fuel pickup may be clogged.  If what you say is correct about the pump not operating until the engine is cranked and the pump unable to build the pressure up quick enough, because of a clogged pickup and low voltage due to cranking.  That coupled with me forever running the tank very low sounds very feasible.

As you say other EFI cars run the pump for a few seconds before starting, so I am surprised to hear the V6 doesn’t.

I may have to limp my way to work tomorrow by shorting the relay again for a few seconds if needed.  I will make plans to open up the tank this weekend.

Cheers

Hi,

Would seem i spoke to soon.  Problem returned to haunt me this afternoon in Morrisons carpark.  :-[

I rectified it by shorting the relay out again and then starting her up.  One thing that springs to mind i that i may not have primed the pump up correctly the first time round.  I did as Kev advised and took the fuel pipes off and ran the pump but i only pumped out 1/2 pint of fuel and not any more into a fuel can.  Maybe this wasnt enough?

The 4 flashes still stand, which i assume = zero errors.

Cheers
