Omega General Help / Re: heater bypass valve
« on: 20 December 2007, 00:12:16 »
Thanks for your replies.

i WOULD NEVER HAVE THOUGHT OF .....dAMN cAPS lOCK........That's better...... the aerosol idea.
And maybe I should have thought of flushing the heater matrix out first - I have in fact done that on a car years ago with the same success.  Thinking about it now, it's probably full of radweld that the previous owner used, in a futile attempt to stop the coolant leak.

I love this forum.

I'll post with any successful results (but I'll probably just sulk if it doesn't work)

Many thanks.

Is there an easy way to check for leaks. I'm thinking that listening wouldn't be any good, fairy liquid around joints won't show a leak IN to the vacuum, hopefully I don't have to replace all the lines with new ones???

Omega General Help / heater bypass valve
« on: 19 December 2007, 20:57:33 »
Hi All

I've had no heat in my casr since I got it.  I suspected the HBV and got my VX dealer to change it, but things are no better .  They did warn me that it might not be that, but offered to diagnosis / testing at their usual rates - I declined and got them to do the HBV - maybe they do know better than me after all!

Anyway, any other ideas?  They say it MIGHT be a lack of vacuum (so the valve isn't operating).  Is there just the one narrow vac pipe attached to the HBV, and is there any easy way of checking the vacuum on it?

Any help would be appreciated, as the heated seats don't warm my hands and it's now sub-zero.

PS the aircon has never blown cold - I tried to top it up with refrigerant.  Could this be related to the HBV as well?

Alan

Well done!!!  Before reading all the threads, I thought you were heading up a blind alley and were going to have to get the head off to do the job.

Mine had done the same, which has now been sorted properly.  Previously, though, someone had re-drilled in situ, but not straight!!! AND had drilled too far so that the hole was visible on the face of the head (when it was removed due to head gasket failure).

This is obviously a weak point on these engines (along with a few othe weak points?????).

Just as a point of intreset, my head just been welded to repair corroded waterways and skimmed at a local workshop.  They did a great job, included reseating the valves, and replacing valve rubbers and replacing two broken studs. All for £220 inc. VAT.

Omega General Help / Re: head gasket gone ( I think) - £?

Thanks all - I'll try to have a look at the weekend.

If it is the h/gasket and needs doing, would £400 inc parts & labour sound about right? (not including doing any work on the head).

Omega General Help / head gasket gone ( I think) - £?

Hi

99.99% sure my h/gasket has gone (topping up water every 50 miles, oil every 300 miles). Water stinks of oil.

Any idea what an independent garage would charge me to renew it?

Also, how long should it last before I might have to do it again? Friend of mine recommends getting it fixed, then getting rid of the car quick, but I would have thought it should be OK for 60-80k miles before giving out again.  Any opinions? (Facts preferred, but opinions gratefully received ;))

Many thanks,

Alan

Hope you don't think I was being too flippant in my previous post - my turn will come.  I currently have no heat, so maybe I'll look for a hose that I can disconnect and leave hanging in mid-air.

Oops, there I go again being flippant.

Omega General Help / Re: No heat in cabin- what should I check first?

Many thanks - I'll look at the HBV, but is there an easy way to know if it's knackd (assuming all the hoses seem to be connected)?

Omega General Help / No heat in cabin- what should I check first?
« on: 15 September 2007, 18:12:03 »
Hi

I'm getting no heat in the cabin - only noticed it yesterday when it got cold in the evening.  The auto electronic controls seem to work OK, but it just blows more (cold) air when I turn the temp up.

Is the 1st thing to try to backflush the heater matrix, or should I check the fabled 'heater bypass valve' that I've read about (not entirely sure what that does when it's working, let alone when it goes wrong).

I know I should probably attack both routes, but really would appreciate a steer as I don't have a lot of spare time at the mo as I'm just about to move house; so if I can keep it down to one job instead of two that would be great.

Many thanks,

Alan

Recently bought a high mileage Omega.

I now realise that all the things that I think aren't quite right with it are very common faults.

The crack of doom is the latest one where I've now discovered I am not alone!  Presumably the worst that can happen (apart from waking my neighbours at 6 am if I have to go to work early) is that the restraint stops restraining?  The hinges themselves should be OK?

Omega General Help / Re: Vibration at 70 - 80 and beyond (cough)

I'm afraid the propshaft could be the culprit as in neutral, it rotates with the rear wheels, not with the engine.

But if your tyres are old, they can go out of shape, and as stated above, sometimes the only cure is a pair of new tyres.

Good luck (and don't shoot that Mercedes mechanic yet).

Eddie

Sorry if you think Im teching grandmother to sich eggs and all that, but did you have a rear window open at the time?  I have experienced some horrible ear-numbing vibrations which are instantly cured by closing all the windows - it's just the air vibrating in the cabin, and, as you witnessed, not felt through the body of the car.

Maybe?

Omega General Help / Transmission line pressure adjuster?
« on: 25 August 2007, 13:00:50 »
I have a "Rosmore GM transmission line pressure adjuster" fitted to my car with Scotchlocks.  It's a small aluminium box (8cmx8cmx4cm) screwed onto the bulkhead. I know that's what it is because that's what it says on the label!

Any idea what it does (and why it might have been added). I can't believe it's a genuine VX fitment.
