It's probably not the head gasket but the HBV, it could be something even as simple as it was on mine that the two bolts that locate water pipe to the back of the block weren't tight. HBV is a common issue, fiddly to do but not expensive. Lots of posts on here about how to do it and test it too. If you suspect a headgasket you can do a chemical sniffer test on it (available from motor factors) that will definitely give you an answer. You can also ask a garage to do a pressure test. This is done very simply, they attach a pump to the expansion tank and presurise the system, they leave it pressurised and watch for drops, that will tell you if there's a leak. I found that mine was using a bit of coolant but the problemturned out to be that I hadn't bled the system properly and that caused airlocks. Hope this helps.

Exhaust manifold to cat ones that is. I have fitted two new exhaust manifold gaskets, copper nuts and compression washers but they keep working themselves loose every 500 miles. The studs are fine, not loose. Not sure what to try next as nylon ones are out of the question.

Omega General Help / Heavy steering
« on: 12 December 2009, 18:00:34 »
My car has just developed heavy steering.I know that the idler arm is in need of doing and I have a brand new genuine one to pop on this weekend but surely it can be that? The fluid level is right, the serpentine belt is new, the pump has only done 55k. Is my rack on the fritz? (That's done£150k) :question

I've got this exact same problem. Am going to clean the ICV tomorrow. I thought mine was the TPS but I'mtold that these don't fail. Do you think your ICV may be faulty rather than dirty?

Mine a leaking like a good un and its causing problems with the abs/ traction control as the sensors are getting covered. Anyone replaced these? The book of lies says that you need to preload the front one but I have no idea how to do this. Any thoughts?

Couldn't agree more. I run cheap cars and with the money I save, this lives in the garage:

Handbrake is easy enough but what would you recommend for the headlights?   Am I looking at a tube of rubbing compound and lots of elbow grease or this there an easier way.

1200 wet and dry (wet) followed by a good cutting compound to finish.

I assume they looked clouded

What he said! :y I used to do these on fiat coupe headlights. What's faded in usually a laquer. I went for 1200 grit to 1500 grit, coarse compound and then fine compound (Like G3 and G6) they'll come out like new.

I reckon its the TC myself but it won't hurt to drain the fluid and replace it.

Omega General Help / Re: question about rocker (camshaft) cover
« on: 25 November 2009, 18:48:44 »
Its not just torquing them to the correct setting, you need to do this progressively in an opposing manner. As a rule of thumb, I use a little sealant two where it goes in the vertical plane (like the D shapes) I start with the centre 4 and screw them thumb tight (in opposing order) I then do the outers. I return to the middle and torque about half the recommended amount and the same on the outers finally repeating the process to final torque. Anal but I don't have leaky covers!

If you need to get it on the road, a trackrod end is around £20 new, spings are easy to get from a breaker, think I paid £10 for mine and the front shock, I would just get a good one for around £30 off a breaker and then replace when you have a few more quid. At the end of the day, these cars aren't worth much and you want to spend as little as possible.

My Chevy has stem seal seepage. Always smokes on start up. As long as you take if for a good run before MOT and keep an eye on the oil, I shouldn't worry too much for the mo.

Prop shaft too I believe. Aren't they different lengths? I personally wouldn't bother either because you will have to declare it to your insurance and it will be classed as a modified vehicle. You'd be better off selling and buying a manual.
