Omega General Help / Thermostat Woes..
« on: 13 April 2007, 12:32:19 »
..even before I start.

Autovaux swore the 2 seals, 2 bolts (as they are bigger on the new stat) and some peice of pipe would be here today..

They're not, and won't be because the idiots sent it via royal mail 1st class recorded, rather than a guaranteed next day - they've really fu**ed me off on this one, so thats the end of business between us..

Anyway - can I just get 2 m8x30 bolts myself and bung them in?  Also, I've got the seal on the stat, + one more that I need (Could be one of the two I've ordered (making 3))..

Is it doable with the bits I've got?  I really wanted to at least do something this weekend, since I have a pass from the war office..

Thanks all for you replies.

I will try to answer some of your questions Marks:

1) Only the TC light is lit. But after starting up the engine, sometimes Airbag light is lit too (The accident didn't cause any airbag to open). Before the accident Check engine light was always lit.
2) Yes, all of the lits come out, then they all turn off. But after a while TC turns on while the engine is started and the car is parked.
3) I can't answer this question.
4) Car front axle, Wheel shock absorber, Steering Wheel Axle, and chassis pulling.
5) I really don't know.

Marks, what do you mean by "this is a drive by wire throttle so if the motor asembly is playing up you get no throttle opening"??

Moya

I think he's saying that as its 'drive by wire' you don't have a throttle cable in the traditional sense.  In place of a cable you have some kind of motor / servo that controls the throttle opening and closing and its controlled electronically rather than mechanically..

So, if you're motor / servo is knackered then the throttle won't be opening or closing properly..

Anyway, i'm sure Mark will clarify for you, gl with your problem.. :)

Omega General Help / Re: Metal covers

Hi
Are the metal covers from a vectra 2.5,2.6 or 3.2 or are they all metal?
I have just (last week) changed my rocker gaskets, BUT forgot to use the jointing compound on the edges :-[, the result is a very bad oil leak!
any idea of cost for the metal covers?

Yikes!  Reminds me of someone I know quite well - but they put it in the wrong place  ::)

You need to have a pre-facelift omega I think (although I could be wrong) and the covers I've got have come of a P-reg Vectra with the X25XE engine.. (2.5 V6)

Any reason why you chose to replace the plastic ones for metal ?

I prefer the look of them, and they instill some kind of (possibly un-warranted) confidence in me, time will tell..

Saw some metal cam covers from veccy somewhere on this forum & wondered if anyone has fitted them to an Omega, if so any advantage over plastic ones & is it easily done or is some form of surgery needed.

I'll let you know if mine turn up some time this year  ;)

Hi here we go, i have finally had a proper look at my cambelt?
it`s not snapped, about 5mm has stripped off teeth are still there
but when i turn the crank it dosent move the rest of the belt,
looks like the teeth have been stripped down there, as i turned the
crank (easily) i could here air hissing then it harder to turn,
any idea`s????????
Pete

If it aint turning the rest of the belt, it aint turning the cams, so its definitely fubar in terms of timing at the very least - these other guys will know more I'm sure..

Sorry to hear about your bad luck mate.

Omega General Help / Re: Torque Values for Autobox Sump Bolts..

Quick check says the following:

M8 Bolts = 20nm

M10 Bolts = 40nm

Different size bolts on the 2 sumps.

I am going to double check though as 40nm seems too high to me...

Hmm, mine were all the same size, could the m10 be the the 3 bolts for the filter?

40 does sound high to me too...

Cheers LB :)

Omega General Help / Re: Wishbone Bolts 'n' bits
« on: 13 April 2007, 13:02:05 »

Hi all,

Got me some wishbones to fit, and looking forward to taking the car to pieces to do it.  It's the 'putting it back together' I hate as that's usually where I break stuff.

Anyway, although I have the wishbones themselves I read that it's wise to replace all the bolts at the same time.  I know these are only a few quid each, but are they on TC?  With the amount of oil & filters I go through I'm contemplating trying to get hold of a TC, so it'd be another excuse to get off my backside and get one.

Also, whilst I've got the car in bits, is it worth changing drop links or anything else around there?  I've an MOT due in August (a little way off I know) but I'm fairly certain that one of these, can't remember which side, was pulled up with an advisory to change it soon.

Last thing, promise, and the answer will probably be one of those 'how long's a piece of string' answer's, BUT, how long does an average set of brake pads/discs last (GM ones) doing mostly motorway miles.  A few averages or guesses would be a start...

Basically I want to go to Vauxhall with a shopping list, and I'd like to only go once...   I always forget something, or get halfway through a job and find I can't finish it because they're shut.

Thanks in advance for the help!   :)

When I did mine I didn't replace any bolts.

I would do the droplinks at the same time - only a tenner each from Vauxhall Spares Centre - these come with new locking nuts. (Have fun getting the old ones off, if you don't use any heat that is! And if you do use heat, don't cook your abs sensors!)

As for brakes, I've only just replaced mine so couldn't tell you... Make sure you get new brake wear sensors if you get new pads, they pretty much always snap..

Its not unknown....normaly flags an engine fault though....whats the battery charge voltage to...

When running, measures just under 14v

Is there anything I can check, or look for? It sounds almost I've knocked something off but I don't know what :(

Sorry to hear you're having probs James :( It was all going too well!

How about the connector on the side of the gearbox, any chance you're knocked that off? Or dislodged?

As with regards to coolant, the V6 has an oil cooler buried in the engine block, and this tends to corrode and leak if not using the right coolant and changing frequently.

Well I've learnt something there, I thought they were destined to fail, I didn't realise it was a coolant issue that could cause their demise...

Yes and no... definitely poor qaulity coolant kills the oil cooler, BUT they also fail for no apparent reason... mine was replaced by Vx while the car was still under warranty with the factory coolant still in it. So changing the coolant and using the Vx Red one is crucial, but still it is not a guarantee against oil cooler faliure...

I almost want to just do it anyway, and get one of the new: less-prone-to-failure ones in there..

Omega General Help / Re: Dead Locking Problem
« on: 11 April 2007, 12:35:50 »
Quote
Hi all,

My omega has been faultless for the past few months of ownership, I now have a little problem  :(

At the weekend I disconnected the battery to try and sort out the dodgy beam on my Xenon headlamps, anyway with that done put the car back together, everything seemed to work, I programmed up the windows and sunroof, then with the windows down and sunroof opened, I locked and deadlocked the car and closed everything from the remote.

Tuesday morning as I was driving to work the sunroof opened on its own as if I had pressed the resume position button, as it was bloody cold I closed the sunroof and all was well.

Any how on getting home last night I locked the car as normal and pressed the button again to deadlock the car, however it didnt deadlock, and nothing I do will get it to deadlock.  I havent tried the key as the lock doesnt move as I dont think that the key has been used for years.

So anyway after all this rambling could it be the pin switch in the drivers door that is causing this problem??

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Stu

Mine does this from time to time, my x-reg astra did it, so did my w-reg astra coupe.. Sometimes it just wouldn't deadlock - the odd thing is that it did it more if I was parked near a wall, almost as if it could sence that I was parked nearer something than I should be - I know it sounds odd, but thats what it did - move away from the wall and it would deadlock again...
