What size is the splined socket key required for the bolts that secure the carrier flange? Or is a splined Allen key better?
What torque are they done up to?

The pivot pins for the parking brake shoe thrust springs are inserted from the back on later cars, secured on the front side with a cupped washer. On older cars it was necessary to (temporarily) loosen the carrier plate bolts and move the carrier plate outwards to retrofit new type pins. The older pins were inserted from the front into slots in the flange carrier plate. However is it still necessary to move the newer carrier plates simply to fit replacement pins?

The Frome car ha a short MOT with advisories, while the Wedmore car will be cheap 'cos it needs a head gasket replacing. Most e-bay Astras are from traders and jolly expensive to a man accustomed to buying Omegas under £500. Does the Astra 1.8 use heater bypass valves?
You have to ask yourself if it's just a head gasket why hasn't the vendor had it repaired. You need to factor in the cost of a replacement head from somewhere. Vauxhall will say that 16 valve heads can't be skimmed, only the older 8 valves. Trouble is that there isn't any spare metal before you are into the valve seats, so if the head is distorted then there probably isn't enough thickness available to get it flat again.

If it's just the gasket burnt out somewhere but the head is still flat, hasn't been let overheat, you can maybe clean off any crud and fit a new gasket. But you have no way to know until you get the head off and check it.

The description is spares or repair, that implies that it's good for spares only. And in that respect the current bid of £206 is about the limit of it's value, to someone who lives local and can trailer or tow it away and wants it as a donor for parts other than the engine.

You might do better searching on Gumtree.

There's an output shaft speed sensor. As I recall it's near the top of the side at the nearside rear of the box. I'd check it for corroded or broken wiring. Unplug the connector and clean maybe.

In my experience the V6 centre pipes will outlast the back box. The back boxes rust through at the back where the stubs are that connect to the centres. The GM factory original centre pipes and back boxes weren't stainless but were much better quality than anything available now.

It's easier to drop the whole lot as one assembly from the cats back than to mess around trying to separate the sections.

And watch out for the rear box. If it's been on the car for a long time and an original, it might be unexpectedly heavy.

"Pre MOT check" is usually a waste of time, unless maybe you mean that you did it yourself. Get the car MOT tested and decide what to about if it actually fails. It might well pass with just an advisory on the exhaust. Most MOT test stations allow free re-tests if the car is brought back within 10 days with the failures fixed. They don't re-test everything, just the failure points.

It's been suggested several times on other forums such as MSE that Council run MOT test centres, perhaps surprisingly, are good as they have no vested interest in failing your car as they don't do repairs for the general public. It seems that where Councils run MOT test centres to look after their own fleets they are also legally obliged to offer MOT test services to all. Not tried it myself however I did take an Omega to one a couple of years ago to have the emissions tested when they offered free tests. It passed.

Where is the hole in your exhaust? If it's the rear of the back box where it meets the centre pipes then it's well nigh impossible to weld or patch. Buy the system DG linked to and put that on. You'll have to drill out any broken bolts from the flanges on the cats. If they haven't been drilled out already. Or get a garage to put it on.

The top of this page has the parts schematic for the standard arrangement of V6 HBV hoses.
Cars with no cruise control have a different hose connecting to the top port of the HBV.

The top of this page has the schematic for hoses of V6s built for Finland, Norway and Sweden. AIUI these cars have a secondary circulation pump which allows the cabin heater to run with the engine off, so long as the coolant is above a threshold temperature. Or maybe that's rubbish.

So before deciding the plumbing is incorrect you need to determine whether or not this is a Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian spec car as opposed to, for example, an imported German spec car? And if so does it have cruise control? Nice and simple.

What symptoms to you have? That make you think the plumbing is wrong?

Did you clean the EGR before you put it back on?
I merely removed the top half of the EGR to enable me to blank it off. I cleaned it as much as I could. Would it have helped to remove the entire valve from the plenum and cleaned it more thoroughly?

Remove egr, and blank it off.clean egr, replace, Should solve problem.

AIUI the valve still has to respond to the signals that instruct it to open/close, albeit the valve is no longer open to the exhaust. Yours is likely coked up with carbon and is jammed or jamming. Cleaning it should allow the valve to open and close and that will clear the fault code and light. Because it's now blanked off it can't get coked up again. Can't remember what I used to clean mine out. Might have been carb clean or diesel. Not sure.

Not sure you've actually confirmed if the car you are dealing with is a later V6 with ventilated rear discs or not? Assuming you have ventilated then you can in all probability re-use the pins. They are not in a beauty contest, just clean them up with a fine wire brush or similar.

The cross springs are a different matter. They corrode, especially around the rivet. So I would clean them far more carefully. More of an attempt at longer term preservation.

Somewhere there used to be a comprehensive list of bulbs used in Opel/Vauxhall Omega, including all the instrument bulbs. But I can't seem to locate it easily.

Is it like any of the bulbs to be found here? Perhaps the R509TMGY with grey base?

Hi, thanks for that, the Gates kit link you gave me, will that fit cause my engine numbers higher than the info they give?
The Gates full kit for your engine number is K035453XS. It's the same as the other earlier kit linked above except for the backplate used on the tensioner roller. You use the existing backplate from your engine if you use the earlier kit and swap the new rollers onto it.

This SKF kit for a SAAB with the same engine as yours will also be fine. SKF make the factory original rollers and their bearings. At £47.95 it's a lot cheaper than the full price Gates.

You will also need to borrow or buy a GM V6 timing belt locking kit.

I seem to recall that one of the big supermarkets trialled pre-authorising £99, about a year ago. Your available funds went down by £99 for several days pending confirmation of the proper amount, in your case £50. There were loads of complaints and bad press.

If the matrix is broken which would seem to be the case here then I don't believe there is any way to fix it. The broken ceramic can move and obstruct the exhaust which causes a sudden power loss.

It's not so much the cost of the car as whether it's worth it to you to fix it. The Vauxhall cats for the 2.5/3.0 V6 are reputed to be much more robust that the 2.6/3.2 version. And better than the aftermarket cats they sell now. If you can find a good used original that might be the way to go. However the youngest is going to be 10 years old at least.
