Omega General Help / Re: coil pack relocation
« on: 24 July 2010, 12:23:27 »
When I did my pack a year ago i'm sure someone posted a howto on this forum (i've seen it somewhere). I toyed with it but decided not to because it was too much effort and didn't look good (imo).

I actually took my tints off, i'd say two trains of thought.

I think they heated my car up, black absorbs heat and I felt a noticeable difference between my front and rear windows when I put my hand on them.

The other way is they stop glare/sunburn/UV(?) through the sides when carrying passengers, I didn't see the point for the 2 weeks of the year when we have sun  8-) You will probably have your aircon switched on more but that's irrelevant to me as I never switch it off!

Part of the reason I work on my own car so much is that I spent 2 years working opposite the Ford main dealer for Slough looking directly into their service bays......

Omega General Help / Suspension knock
« on: 12 July 2010, 13:30:56 »
On my CDX estate I have a knock from the suspension over even slightly rough roads, I also noticed yesterday it has taken the nsf tyre down to the metalwork.

I have now ordered new wishbones and drop links but was wondering if there is any other part that could cause this noise/effect that I should look at while down there. The previous owner has had the steering arm replaced and i've not bothered with tracking as it's a waste of money in the current state.

Cheers
Baz

I'm with the other guys, strip it and check the head(s), all it's costing is time.

Omega General Help / Drop link question
« on: 30 June 2010, 10:31:48 »
Just picked up a cheap mig and it has the knock from the front suspension on rough roads. I'm assuming it is drop links so was wondering if we have any recommended cheap suppliers? Also should I just assume wishbones are gone as well and do them at the same time, and of course any preferred supplier?

Realistically i'm not interested in longevity as I plan to sort my Elite over the next 2-3 months and then just sell this on, I am of course not interested in using dangerous pattern parts  :)

Omega General Help / Re: Smoke from dipstick

That's what I was hoping someone would say!

I'm tempted to take a flyer on it, maybe i'll see how I feel after sleeping on it.

Omega General Help / Smoke from dipstick
« on: 28 June 2010, 21:53:59 »
After thinking I had found a car from JB my wife has veto'd it on the irrational grounds that she wont drive an ex-police car............ ::)

So, back in the hunt for a cheap driver i've gone to see a 2.5 tonight. It looks and drives well enough but has the usual signs of leaking gaskets, the oil looks like it needs a damn good change but I see no sign of mayo build up.

The only problems I see are 1) after 5 mins warm up if you remove the dipstick or filler it tube it is smoking, I couldn't tell if it was steam or not. 2) it had a coolant warning up but the header tank looked clean enough. In my mind i'm thinking if the breathers are blocked it is pushing the oil back up the tube etc but i'm also mindful that is wishful thinking on my part and it could be a head gasket. What i'm after is an opinion on what people think it might be.

Omega General Help / Re: Coolant levels
« on: 24 June 2010, 16:22:34 »
If you have coolant on the floor that might help diagnosis. If it's the cap the leaking, fluid should be close to the cap position. My car still has an intermittent leak under the gearbox, I thought HBV but now i'm almost certain it's the pipe going into the coolant bridge which is completely hidden from view behind the inlet manifold. I suspect in my case I will have a replacement car before I fix it  ;)

Thats been fiddled with, thats got Elite seats not MV6
That's my original comment, seeing as he has owned it for 6 months it could go two ways. Either it's been previously owned by someone with a little knowledge (note the grill change as well) and now the MOT is close he wants out, or it's a butchered basket case.

Omega General Help / Re: lalrm keeps going off for no reason.
« on: 18 June 2010, 16:01:02 »
I had the bonnet switch problem, I just unplugged it and taped it up, been that way for the last 5yrs :) I think my problem was relating to having a black car as it only went off in the summer/on hot days, I can only imagine that the heat generated caused the bonnet or bracket to flex slightly. Nice easy test though.

Must be the time of year for it.....

I had the plenum off mine last week and went all over my HBV, dry as a bone. I did spot wetness below the inlet manifold on a pipe that appeared to go into the oil cooler cover plate, is this the stainless pipe people are referring to?

Coincidentally my oil cooler was replaced about a year ago as well......

All these wonderful tools you now have, just don't forget Tufanega/Manista! (the one with polymer grains in)

You need to be able to properly clean your hands afterwards.
