Omega General Help / Re: Severe miss 3.2 V6
« on: 26 August 2011, 23:22:40 »
And first prize goes to the "oil in the plug wells" answer.

Collected the car today, he said the plug wells were full of oil so he cleaned them out and changed the rocker gaskets.

Still some drops of oil in the cooling system, I'll take it back to him next week to have that cleaned.

Thanks for all your help.

I have another question about the engine being hard to start on LPG, but I'll post that separately.

I went past the mech yesterday. He showed me the leak test they did on the heat exchanger and sure enough it was leaking, albeit very slowly - just a few small bubbles.

I also mentioned the oil-in-the-plug-well problem.

Apparently no one had the heat exchanger in stock so won't have the car back until Friday.

Thanks for the Pedal Trick tip. I'm going to see the car today, will mention oil in the plug wells to the mech.

The car has about 220K miles now. Actually I had the plugs changed when the misfire first started just recently and the coilpacks are about 40K/50K old. How can one diagnose the coil packs?

Omega General Help / Severe miss 3.2 V6
« on: 22 August 2011, 16:24:42 »
Hi everyone,

We've gotten back from our ninth trip to southern Italy in the Omega, but this time she developed a severe miss just south of Naples. I checked her over and found a little mayo on the overflow cap and some drops of oil in the water, but the oil was ok and temperature ran fine.

I kept an eye on everything and running on five cylinders (occasionally with severe knock) we managed to get back to the UK.

Since we got back, the miss has almost completely gone away but there is quite a lot of oil in the cooling system now.

I have dropped it with my mechanic who thinks the oil cooler has failed and that the miss is something else.

So now I'm trying to work out what caused the severe misfiring and knocking!

Actually for some time now, when I start the car from cold, it soon starts miss firing until it gets so bad that it nearly stalls. As soon as it warms up, it goes away, all of which suggests some sort of ECU or sensor problem.

It's worth mentioning that the engine light has been on for some time due to the lambda sensors. I assumed this is because of the well known cat issue with V6 engines, but now I wonder? Also, it has an LPG conversion.

Before I start changing random sensors I would appreciate some input.

Thanks in advance.

Dominic

Oh, btw, note to admins: I didn't receive the e-mail notification for the replies.

Thanks for the replies.

Problem finally sorted out today; Mechanic says he replaced the the solenoid behind the radio, not sure he was being completely honest with me, but he didn't charge me so I'm not complaining.

BTW: not sure what happened to the avatar, it's the same one I've been using for years. I'll reduce it down.

Omega General Help / Climate Control vacuum pipes facelift
« on: 24 October 2010, 17:14:49 »
Hi everyone,

Still trying to fix my Climate Control. At the moment I have no heating, although HBV was changed back in spring.

Have determined if we apply vacuum to the HBV then hot water flows and hot air comes out of vents, otherwise nothing.

What I'm after is a schematic of the vacuum pipes and solenoids inside the passenger compartment. Does anyone have one , or is there one on the forum?

Omega General Help / Re: Rear end vibration
« on: 23 September 2010, 09:22:33 »
Thanks for the replies, the car is with the mechanic now, but he's not an Omega specialist.

Tailshaft is the obvious one except that it only comes in at high speed. Also, it's more pronounced with a heavy load.

I don't know how the rear suspension works and if there are any bushes to check for?

It definitely only started on our return journey i.e. within the last 1.5K miles.

Hi everyone,

Just back from our ninth trip in VOO to southern Italy. She's developed a rear end vibration at high speed, any suggestions?

Other info, high mileage (205K), front bushes all replaced last year, one rear bearing replaced last year, New tires all round (Michelin Primacy 99 rating)

Omega General Help / Re: Engine swap Straight 4 to V8

I don't know what engines Cecotto ran, but I'm guessing it was a GM/Chevy small block in which case you'll want to search for the LS series. Try a google for LS7, LS6 or LS1.

A true LS7 will have more than enough horsepower to make iron fillings of your current gearbox and differential. Getrag and others make excellent 6 speed gearboxes and of course don't forget a decent clutch/pressure plate arrangement, but for your final drive I recommend you seriously consider a Ford nine inch. Lightweight, but very strong with the supported pinion design

Adapting it to the Omega is going to be fun, but you'll need it with all that horsepower (oops, Kilowatts!).

Good luck.

Omega General Help / Re: 3.2 auto gearbox codes
« on: 07 July 2010, 22:59:16 »
Having replaced the camshaft sensor everything seems to have come good. The engine now starts instantly instead of the endless cranking, idles smoothly, the engine light has gone out and - so far, has not returned.

I haven't scanned the trans, but I'm guessing the lack of warning lights means no error codes...

...now just need to sort out the air con leak.

I had the ATF and filter changed when I bought it (nearly 40K miles ago) which improved the shifting. Garage said the old stuff was quite dark in colour.

Will have them check the level again. IIRC it has to be measured in gear, at idle, on level ground.

In the excitement I forgot to mention that I've been having an occasional problem with the box not shifting back into low when I coast to a stop. I might be coming down  a long gentle gradient when I get to the stop sign at the end, the gearbox seems to be in a high gear as it's extremely sluggish to drive off. Putting the selector in low or re-starting the engine seems to temporarily solve the problem. That's why I had the gearbox scanned.

Omega General Help / 3.2 auto gearbox codes
« on: 05 July 2010, 12:47:41 »
Hi everyone,

My high mileage 3.2 estate is getting some well needed work at the moment. The auto gearbox has given two codes which I wrote down somewhere and promptly misplaced the paper.

In any case. the two codes relate to:
  • Engine input speed (it can't see it)
  • Torque Converter not locking up.
I should say that both my crank and cam sensors have failed recently. I had the crank sensor replaced in Italy (had to air express from the UK) following which the cam sensor started failing.

As it hasn't yet been replaced, could this be causing the engine speed error code on the auto box? or might it be related to the TCC problem.

On the TCC issue, how does the ECU know that it's not locking up? A quick google indicates that the solenoid is a not uncommon problem for this box. is it simply a case of changing the solenoid?

Thanks for any advice.

Dominic

Right, I sorted out the spare pipe, just a misunderstanding between me and my mechanic (it was the feed from the Manifold), but I still have a problem with the heat seemingly stuck on.

I've confirmed that the vacuum supply to the HBV is on when temp is up and off when temp is on LO. This suggests the HBV is normally off i.e. blocked when no vacuum to the diaphragm. So I thought: "if I disconnect the vacuum line to the HBV the valve will just stay shut, no hot water through the matrix and it should be cool in the car". So...

...Yesterday on the way to Aldbeburgh I disconnected the vacuum and it was still hot in the car when I turned on the Climate Control (16 deg). I've come to the conclusion something is wrong with the HBV, ether it's the wrong part (are there different types?), or it's a faulty part.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the replies, I'll look tomorrow.

Cheers.
