A bought and watched the DVD, dvd only lasted about half an hour, so how does it take so long and what bits are missing from the DVD?

the dvd basically misses out the pauses thinking what bit to take off/put back next :P

basically Vx quote for a sensible amount of time to do the job (it's possible to do the timing belt in maybe an hour if you work rather fast) but it's worth taking your time and doing it right  :y
I assume it also cuts out 'ping-oppsit' moments and first-aid segments :y

Drunken rant removed :-[
Every time i've been in a car with a heated front screen i can't help but focus on the wires - don't fancy driving a car with one

This is a very straightforward job, best done following the above linked guide and not the Haynes book of lies - as from memory, that recommends removing the steering wheel. !
One additional bit of advice is to replace all the bulbs, not just the blown ones, as they are inexpensive and sod's law dictates that once you have replaced the blown bulbs,  at least one more will have blown by the time the wounds you have inflicted upon yourself removing the dash the first time have healed :o but I'm sure that's down to me being 'fragile' - most of my spannering attempts result in some sort of injury :(

I'd have to work out a system whereby it didn't rip my bumper off if I drove off without unplugging it, of course... ;)

Hmm. Interesting. Thanks for the info. :y

from another forum:-
When I was in Canada many years ago the locals used to fit an electric kettle element into the sump and connect it to a drive away socket. You put an extension cord onto this gadget, plugged it into a timer and it heated the sump oil up in the morning. The special socket was for the inevitable time when you rushed out and forgot to disconnect it.

It's cold at the moment and if he needs to refit an HBV in the summer he can.

It is a quick fix to get heat into a car.

As to aircon - better to use it to prevent seal leaks, and it barely effects economy as I found with the 2.0
I'm with Martin,  it may be a 'bodge' but i would'nt fancy playing with spanners in the current weather to properly fix it - would rather bodge quickly and wait until i could work in T-shirt & shorts to fully fix the issue

It takes twice as long to do this "bodge" as it does to change the HBV!

Ooh, Bugger!, I'll wander off then :-X

I used Fernox 'LS-X' from my local plumbing merchant
If that's the one that cures when wet - it's a cracking bit of kit

how do you get at the screws? from inside the engine bay??? :-?
no, enough room from behind the bumper to get at them - you have to feel for them, rather than see them

but if you want to take the bottle out completely it's a bumper off job as it's screwed to the inside metal reinforcing bar :-/

This is the recommended approach from Haynes but it is not required. I've removed the bottle on a '99 mini-facelift and an '03 facelift without removing the bumper. From memory, It is just a case of undoing the 3 screws and manipulating the bottle out

I would personally do it myself out of pride, as I couldn't stand some spotty kid doing something on my car

Sorry - but I find that quite unkind, steroetypical and a little ill thought out.

Consider replacing the term "spotty kid" with "inexperienced mechanic" and it will sound a million times more reasonable.

What about PFY ?

No worries.
from memory, one thing that is not in the guide is the removal of passenger window switch
This involves using a small flat-bladed screwdriver to release the catch, which is inside the switch
